Cluster Displays "Transmission Emergency Mode" Warning.

MODEL:

5 Series (E39) fitted with Low Instrument Cluster

Situation:

Low Instrument Clusters with software versions SW 9.0 and SW 10.0 can sometimes partly misinterpret data telegrams from the transmission control

unit and set the "Transmission emergency mode" warning light on the Instrument Cluster display. The transmission continues to shift normally.

Instrument clusters with revised software (SW 11.0) were phased into production in September 1997.

Correction:

1. In case of customer complaint, carry out diagnosis with the DIS tester (or MODiC) to confirm complaint:

- Access the "Fault Memory" of the Transmission Control Unit and confirm "No faults stored".

- Access the "Fault Memory" of the Instrument Cluster and confirm one of the following faults are stored: "EGS signal line defective", or

"Transmission has signaled emergency mode program".

2. Replace the instrument cluster with new Instrument Cluster, SW 11.0, or higher. Refer to Repair Instructions 62 21 000.

3. The new Instrument Cluster SW 11.0 is supplied with a Supplementary Owners Handbook which describes revised telltale and warning light

SUBJECT:

Tire Pressure Placards

MODEL:

E46

Situation:

The tire pressure placard used on the E46 323i prior to March 1999 production does not list the "91 H" rated 205/55 R 16 tire, but lists this size tire

as a "91 V" rating.

Some E46's equipped with the optional 225/45 R 17 tires may have tires with a 225/45 ZR 17 91W sidewall designation. This is an interchangeable

designation indicating that the tire can be used in a OR application as well as the "91W" application called for on the E46. The tire pressure placard

used on these cars lists the 225/45 R 17 91W designation only.

Please note that all tire size designation and inflation pressures on the placard are correct.

Correction:

The tire pressure placard used on 323i models has been corrected to show the "91 H" rating as of 3/99 production. Parts stock has been cleared so

that only the updated placards are on hand.

The 225/45 R 17 91W listing on the 323i and 328i tire pressure placards will not be changed.

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, on a 323i equipped with optional 205/55 R 16 91 H tires, the tire pressure placard may be replaced with a corrected

placard, part number 71 24 1 096 738. Wipe the existing placard clean with a dry cloth or paper towel, and adhere the new placard directly on top of

the old one.

In case of a customer inquiry on E46s equipped with optional 17" tires with a 225/45 OR 17 91W sidewall designation, advise the customer that the

tires are interchangeable with the 225/45 R 17 91W, and to follow the information on the tire pressure placard.

Warranty Information:

Replacement of the 323i tire pressure placard is covered under the terms of the BMW new car limited warranty.

Recall - Inspection of Brake Linkage Retaining Clip

Group35

Bulletin Number

Woodcliff Lake, NJ

May 1999

Product Engineering

THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN MUST BE PERFORMED IN CONJUNCTION WITH RECALL CAMPAIGN 99V-063 DESCRIBED IN S.l.

BULLETIN 720499.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY

ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS, AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT:

Recall Campaign 99V-100: Inspection of Brake Linkage Retaining Clip

MODEL:

E46

Situation:

It is possible that the retaining clip that secures the brake booster pushrod to the brake pedal arm may be incompletely seated. Depending on the

manner in which the brake pedal is operated (e.g., if the Antilock Brake System (ABS) is repeatedly activated and the brake pedal pulsates), it is

possible for the clip to detach from the pin on the brake pedal arm. Depending on brake pedal operation, the pushrod could disconnect from the arm.

If this occurs, braking is not possible.

Correction:

Revised quality control inspection procedures were implemented in production beginning March 8, 1999, to assure that the clip is properly installed.

In addition, BMW is conducting a Recall Campaign to check the retaining clip holding the brake booster push rod to the brake pedal on all affected

E46 models.

Although the possibility of the clip coming loose is very remote, some customers may express concern about driving their car to your Service

Department for the inspection. To handle cases of this nature when necessary, BMW will allow (1) for towing affected vehicles to the nearest BMW

Center through the Roadside Assistance system to have the inspection performed, or (2) for sending a technician to the customer's residence in those

cases where this would be simpler and more economical than towing.

If towing the customer's car is necessary, please call Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 and make the arrangements on the customer's behalf.

All possible efforts should be made to accommodate customers that request an appointment for this recall, including overtime, extended service

hours, or if appropriate, alternate transportation. Details on reimbursement are included below.

Affected Vehicles:

This Recall Campaign affects all E46 models from the start of production until 8 March 1999.

182

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer

Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor

Model Chassis Number Range

323i CD55001 - CD56000

323i KC56009 - KC61200

323iA CA8OOO1 - CA83000

323iA FP5OO1O - FP61300

328i KG05005 - KG09200

328iA FROOOO6 - FR09300

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there is a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new

vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment unless

the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

Procedure:

Lower the under dash trim from the driver's side to gain access to the brake pedal arm.

Grasp the retaining clip and attempt to move it up and down as illustrated. Do not remove the clip.

If the clip is secure, (minimal movement) no further action is necessary.

If the clip is noticeably loose it must be replaced.

Parts Information:

If a loose clip is found, one part number 07 12 9 934 921 is required.

Recall Label Instructions:

This campaign has been assigned code number 246. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 246 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on

top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:

Reimbursement for this Recall will be via Campaign Entry.

183

NOTE:

Additional costs incurred while performing this campaign such as; actual overtime paid to technician for this repair, cost of performing repair at

customers home or place of business, and/or one days rental if all service loaner cars are already in use, may be claimed under sublet on this

campaign claim. A detailed explanation of the additional cost claimed under sublet must be provided in the comments section. Since all claims are

subject to periodic audit, documentation supporting the additional reimbursement claimed must be attached to the repair order in the vehicle history

file.

the pushrod could disconnect from the arm. If this occurs, braking is not possible.

DESCRIPTION OF INSPECTION/REPAIR

The inspection/repair will consist of inspecting the clip for tight installation and replacing the clip if it is loose.

This modification will require approximately thirty minutes and will be performed free of charge by your Authorized BMW center. Additional time

will probably be required, depending on the BMW center's scheduling and processing.

PRECAUTIONS

1. CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED BMW CENTER TO HAVE THE NECESSARY MODIFICATION PERFORMED AS SOON AS
