SUBJECT

E38, E39 Digital Phone Adapter Harness for CPT 7000 Phone

MODEL

E38, 7 series produced from 3/97 up to 01/00

E39, 5 series produced from 5/97 up to 01/00

E39/2, 5 series sports wagon produced from 9/98 up to 01/00

SITUATION

In order to install the new digital CPT 7000 phone in a vehicle with the analog pre-wiring harness (designed for CMT 5000VR or CPT 6000VR

phones), the special adapter harness has to be retrofitted into the existing phone wiring harness:

^ E39/2 CPT 7000 Digital Phone Adapter Harness P/N 84 11 0 009 119

Important: The Digital Phone Adapter Harness is not a part of the "CPT 7000 Installation Kit" has to be ordered separately.

Since the CPT 7000 digital phone does not have its own "Voice Activation" circuitry, this feature will not be available in E38 and E39 vehicles with

a modified analog harness.

Note: In series production the revisions to the telephone wiring harness (option 640) were introduced at the end of December 1999.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove left side trunk liner/cargo area floor (see CPT 7000 Installation Instruction for detailed disassembly procedure).

2. Locate the 25-pin "D" sub connector (1) and the 12-pin white phone connector X400 (2) in the vehicle. See the illustrations for connector's

location in each vehicle type:

E38 phone connector location:

(1) 25-pin "D"-sub connector (X18500) - in the left trunk corner, next to audio amplifier

(2) X400 - behind the left tail light

E39 phone connector location:

(1) 25-pin "D"-sub connector (X18500) - on top of rear left wheel housing

(2) X400 - on top of rear left wheel housing

233

E39/2 phone connector location:

(1) 25-pin "D"-sub connector (X18500) - under the cargo area floor

E39/2 phone connector location:

(2) X400 - in the left rear quarter panel, behind audio amplifier

3. Disconnect the 12-pin X400 connector (2 - connector with female pins), and unlock the upper part of the connector housing (1). Using the pin

removal tool (P/N 81 24 9 408 451 from the Electrical Repair kit III) remove the following pins from X400:

^ Pin # 1 Battery (Red)

^ Pin # 4 I-Bus (Yellow/Black)

^ Pin # 7 Ground (Brown)

^ Pin # 11 Tel On (White)

234

4. From the CPT 7000 Phone Adapter Harness (3) remove connector housing 5.

5. Insert 4 loose wires with female pins from the CPT 7000 Phone Adapter Harness (4 on illustration S84 00 U17 and S84 00 U18) into following

positions of the 12-pin X400 connector (1):

^ Pin # 1 Red

^ Pin # 4 Yellow/Black

^ Pin # 7 Brown

^ Pin # 11 White

6. Insert 4 wires (7) previously removed from 12-pin X400 connector into following positions of the 4-pin connector from the adapter harness (5

on illustration S84 00 U19):

^ Pin # 1 Red

^ Pin # 2 Brown

^ Pin # 3 White

^ Pin # 4 Yellow/Black

7. Connect 4-pin connectors (3) and (5). Connect 12- pin connectors (1) and (6).

235

8. Disassemble the 25-pin "D" sub connector (X18500) by removing six screws (1) & (3).

9. Insert Yellow/Black single wire pin (1) from the CPT 7000 Phone Adapter Harness into position 22 of the 25-pin connector.

10. Tape the single wire back to the connector harness to provide proper strain relief.

11. Reassemble 25-pin "D" sub connector. Phone wiring harness is now capable of accepting the CPT 7000 digital phone.

12. For the CPT 7000 phone installation procedure, refer to the detailed instruction included in the "CPT 7000 Installation Kit"
