BMW M5 Getting Special Mission: Impossible Edition In Japan

Both the new M5 and standard 5-Series are getting the Mission: Impossible treatment.

In the film industry, there was a time when BMW supplied cars to the James Bond franchise, but more recently the Bavarian automaker’s cars have featured prominently in the Mission Impossible spy series. This month’s release of Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the sixth film in the long-running franchise, will be no different, as Tom Cruise will be driving the new F90 BMW M5. To celebrate this collaboration, BMW is launching a special “Mission Impossible” edition of both the new BMW 5 Series and the M5.

Unusually, however, both models will only be available in Japan. Dubbed the BMW M5 Edition Mission: Impossible, the special edition M car is based on the M5 Competition model, which means its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 has been tuned to deliver 617 hp, enabling the super sedan to hit 62 mph in 3.3 seconds. It’s finished exclusively in Singapore Grey, matching the car that features in the movie. Further distinguishing the special edition sedan are blacked-out kidney grilles and side mirror caps, and a “Mission Impossible” sticker adorning the B-pillar. Inside, the interior is adorned with piano trim and Merino leather.

Pricing starts from 19,640,000 yen ($177,587) in Japan excluding tax, insurance and other expenses. It’s just a shame it can’t be remotely driven like the movie car. The BMW 5-Series Edition Mission: Impossible, on the other hand, is finished in Black Sapphire complemented with an M Performance kidney grille, ‘Mission: Impossible’ sticker on the B pillar and 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside the cabin you’ll find Dakota leather in black along with BMW Individual trims. Both the standard sedan sedan and Touring models are getting the Mission Impossible treatment, which will be available for the 523i, 523d and 530i models.

Pricing for the 5-Series starts at 7,950,000 Yen ($71,885) for the 523i and goes up to 8,830,000 Yen ($79,800) for the 530i. Both cars are available in both left- and right-hand drive specifications. As well as the new M5, Tom Cruise will also be careering through the streets of Paris in a 1986 BMW 5 Series Sedan during a tense chase scene.

BMW M550i xDrive Getting More Power Courtesy Of The New 8 Series

Has anyone ever objected to additional horsepower? Didn't think so.

The BMW M550i xDrive is no slouch with its potent 4.4-liter twin-turbo N63 V8 engine producing 455 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to all-wheel drive grip, the car takes just 3.9 seconds to hit 60 mph, making us question why anyone actually "needs" to buy an M5 anymore. Clearly, BMW isn't asking the same question because BMW Blog reports that the M550i will soon gain even more power.

Inside sources at Munich tell BMW Blog that the M550i will be updated with a new version of the N63 V8 found in the recently revealed 8 Series Coupe. The only announced version of the 8 Series in the US is the M850i xDrive, which produces 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo V8. This engine, producing approximately the same amount of power and torque, will reportedly find its way into the M550i for the 2020 model year. If this rumor turns out to be true, this would be an increase of 68 hp and 73 lb-ft of torque.

The 530 hp version of the N63 should eventually find its way into all '50i' badged BMW models, including the X5, X6, and upcoming X7. The X5 is currently being sold as a non-M Performance xDrive50i, which will likely be replaced towards the end of 2019.

Here's Proof The Bentley Continental GT Is Getting The Plug-In Hybrid Treatment

Let’s hope it inherits the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid’s powertrain that produces 680 hp.

After the coupe broke cover last year, the Bentley Continental GT range is about to rapidly expand. Spy shots have shown a convertible Continental GTC is in the works, and we recently got a first look at a prototype of the hardcore Continental Speed.

The expansion won’t end there however, as our spies have spotted a plug-in hybrid version of the luxury grand tourer. Aesthetically, it looks virtually identical to the standard model apart from a few subtle tweaks and the addition of a charging port on the rear left fender opposite the fuel cap on the other side.

Word on the street suggests the Continental GT PHEV will get the same hybrid powertrain as its SUV sibling, the Bentayga PHEV, which uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor. If the specs match the hybrid Bentayga, the electrified Continental GT should deliver a pure electric range of up to 31 miles in the NEDC test cycle.

Oddly, Bentley still hasn’t revealed any technical specifications for the Bentayga plug-in. However, the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid shares the same powertrain and produces a combined 462 horsepower, which gives us a rough idea of the Continental GT PHEV’s potential power output.

Alternatively, Bentley could stuff the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid’s powertrain in the electrified Continental GT. If this is the case, this setup would deliver a whopping 680 horsepower, making it the most powerful Continental in the line-up. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet and we aren’t expecting the Continental GT Plug-In Hybrid to be unveiled until next year considering we’re still waiting for the Continental GTC, Speed, and the new Flying Spur to break cover.

The New BMW 8 Series Is Getting Seriously Close To Production Ready

And it could debut as soon as this March.

BMW was never shy about showing off its upcoming reborn 8 Series. Even in concept form last July it looked fairly close to production ready. Today, BMW has released even more images of a pre-production prototype strutting its stuff on the track. Taking this into account, we expect the official reveal to happen this March at Geneva. The 8 Series coupe prototype you’re looking at here is undergoing final preparations, as indicated by BMW.

“The test drives under the most severe conditions show that we are right on target with our concept for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The vehicle dynamics values already achieved are absolutely impressive. Our customers and fans can look forward to a genuine sports car,” says Klaus Frohlich, member of the board of the BMW AG, Development and Research. The new 8 Series will essentially replace the 6 Series as BMW’s big GT style coupe, and a convertible variant will happen as well. The M8 is also a guaranteed thing and BMW says the initial racetrack debut for the M8 GTE will happen this week at the Daytona 24-hour race followed by Le Mans in June.

Other 8 Series trims will likely closely resemble what’s currently available on the 7 Series, considering both cars share a platform. In Europe, a 3.0-liter V6 diesel is possible. A plug-in hybrid variant is expected to be available worldwide, as is the 850i with a 4.4-liter V8 and a range-topping (aside from the M8) 860i with a V12. As for the M8, more than likely it’ll come powered by the M5’s V8 with around 600 hp. The all-wheel drive xDrive system is also expected. Assuming the 8 Series range will debut at Geneva, sales will likely begin next fall.
