Due to exposure to various environmental conditions, corrosion can form at the wheel's center hub, making it difficult to remove the brake disc
during service work. In order to avoid damage to other system components, the instructions in the Repair Manual must be adhered to when removing
the brake discs.

Do not remove the brake disc by striking the friction area with a hammer or other tool. Excess force applied to the brake disc can result in damage to
the drive flange, wheel bearing, carrier, and/or CV joint.
To aid in the removal of the brake disc, a suitable puller (2) can be used. When using a puller (2) to remove the disc, two wheel lugs (1) should be
used to support the disc when it is separated from the drive flange.

Bulgaria's chief prosecutor has ordered these checks to ensure the cars were purchased with legitimate funds. Chief prosecutor spokeswoman Rumyana Arnaudova told journalists, "The aim of the checks is to determine the origin of the money for purchasing these vehicles and if it came as a result from tax fraud or money laundering." The spokeswoman didn't say why those five brands in particular were chosen, only that "their price is extremely high." You hear that shady Bulgarian tax evaders? Audio System Test CD/Tape
MODEL:

SITUATION:
Troubleshooting sound problems ("distortion", "rattle", "noises") from the area of the loudspeakers, in all operating modes of vehicle's audio system.
CAUSE:
Based on an extensive analysis, in a majority of the cases, speakers of the audio systems were improperly diagnosed as defective, and should have
not been replaced.
Audio system sound distortion can be caused by:
-- loose elements of speaker surroundings (e.g.: securing components, clips, trim panels, etc.)
-- loudspeakers not properly secured, or fixtures over-tightened loose speaker grill
-- loudspeaker seal (between speaker and the trim) in contact with the speaker's membrane, or seal permanently attached (cemented) to the
membrane.
-- control units installed in the vicinity of the loudspeaker being loose, or generating noises agitated by a specific frequency of the speaker (e.g.
as a result of a loose printed circuit board inside the module).
CORRECTION:
A new Audio System Test CD/Tape was developed to help you properly diagnose sound system reproduction problems in BMW vehicles equipped
with radio/cassette or CD changer, and to avoid unnecessary replacements.
Every BMW center will receive two copies of the Audio System Test CD/Tape through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional copies
may be purchased from the BMW Parts Distribution Centers.
The following type of sound systems complaints can be diagnosed by using the Test CD/Tape:
-- Sound quality complaints related to distortion in speakers (treble, mid-range, bass and subwoofer)
-- Refer to Section 1
-- Sound quality complaints related to resonance within the vehicle (trim panels, loose wires/fixtures)
-- Refer to Section 2
-- Sound quality complaints related to the lack of continuity ("breaks") in CD/tape reproduction.
-- Refer to Section 3
-- Sound quality complaints related to amplifier/radio malfunctions (only for vehicles with CD changer)
-- Refer to Section 4.
PROCEDURE:
Before diagnosing the sound system with the Audio Test CD/Tape, make sure that:
1. Battery is fully charged (if necessary use a battery charger during the test).
2. "Treble" and "Bass" controls are set to their respective middle positions.
3. On vehicles equipped with a spatial sound switch (Harman-Kardon) or DSP amplifier, both functions are turned OFF.

4. The volume level has to be adjusted before the test. To adjust the volume:
play the music track number 17 (on cassette tape Side B track number 5) and increase the volume to the upper limit of the output stage before
reducing it slightly.
NOTE:
If necessary, wear ear protection devices.
Section 1: Diagnosing sound distortion from the individual speakers
To individually test each speaker of the sound system, from the Test CD/Tape select a suitable track:
-- To test a subwoofer; CD (or cassette) track 09 - 63 Hz
-- To test a woofer; CD (or cassette) track 10 - 125 Hz
-- To test a mid-range speaker; CD track 11 (or cassette tape Side B track 1) - 2500 Hz
-- To test a tweeter speaker; CD track 12 (or cassette tape Side B track 2) - 12500Hz
When using those tracks, keep the preset volume level, and use the "Balance" and "Fader" controls to shift the sound output from "Front left",
through "Front right" and "Rear left" to "Rear right" speaker.
To test the spatial stereo effect (on vehicles equipped with Harman-Kardon system), select a suitable track:
-- To determine the stereo center point - CD track 15 (cassette tape Side B track 4)
-- To check spatial stereo distribution - CD track 16 (cassette tape Side B track 5)
For those tests, retain the preset volume level, and adjust the "balance" and "fader" controls to their respective middle positions.
Section 2: Diagnosing sound reproduction problems related to resonance
within vehicle
In sequence, select tracks from 01 to 08 from the Test CD/Tape. Vehicle resonance tracks (01 to 08) generate sinusoidal oscillations in the following
frequency ranges:
-- Track 01 - 8 to 80OHz
-- Track 02 - 32 to 63Hz
-- Track 03 - 63 to 125Hz
-- Track 04 - 125 to 250Hz
-- Track 05 - 250 to 500 Hz
-- Track 06 - 500 to 1 kHz
-- Track 07 - 1 to 4 KHZ
-- Track 08 - 4 to 16 kHz
For those tests keep the preset volume level, and use the "Balance" and "Fader" controls to shift the sound output from "Front left", through "Front
right" and "Rear left" to "Rear right" speaker.
Section 3: Diagnosing sound quality problems related to lack of continuity ("breaks") in CD/Tape reproduction
Select CD track 13 (cassette tape Side B, track 3), which generates a sinusoidal wave with frequency of 1200 Hz. This track allows you to detect any
reproduction breaks caused by the CD/Tape head. For this test, retain the preset volume level, and adjust the "balance" and "fader" controls to their
respective middle positions.
Section 4: Diagnosing sound reproduction problems related to amplifier/radio malfunctions
This test is available only on the Audio Test CD.
Select CD track 14, which reproduces a digital "zero" (no sound, silence). This test allows you to detect sound reproduction faults caused by the
amplifier or radio (also with engine running). For this test, retain the preset volume level, and adjust the "balance" and "fader" controls to their
respective middle positions.

Watch This V8-Powered BMW 3 Series Madly Drift Through Piles Of Fire Wood
Drifting is both an art and sport, and it takes years of practice and serious effort to master it. Despite an experienced driver’s capabilities and skills, accidents can happen, and the driver of this V8-powered E46 3 Series drift animal definitely had little room for error. That’s because he’s driving in a sea port that’s doused in piles of massive wooden logs and clippings. Latvian driver Kristaps Bluss is behind the wheel in this video from Robyworks Media, and one bad skid could’ve sent him into what’s essentially fire wood.
Shooting flames from out of the side exhausts could’ve acted as the lighter. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this particular E46 3 Series.
It was previously shown as part of a drifting three-some consisting of an E92 3 Series and a Nissan 350Z, also shot in Latvia. But watching Bluss again at work is a demonstration of mad skill, and he makes it look all so easy. The video may only last for just over a minute, but you'll be mesmerized the whole time.

SITUATION
BMW has proposed a settlement of a class action lawsuit involving the rear axle carrier. Under the proposed settlement, owners/lessees of 1999
2006 model year E46 (3 series) vehicles may request to have his/her vehicle inspected to determine if any damage to the rear axle carrier support is
present.
Under certain circumstances, a fracture in the steel body structure could form in the area around one of the rear axle carrier mounting points. As a
result, a distinct clicking noise can be heard from the area of the rear axle carrier during certain driving conditions. Specifically, the noise may be

heard during load reversals on the rear axle, such as when starting from a stop, engaging forward or reverse gears, or when rapidly changing gears.
If a customer of one of these vehicles requests to have his or her vehicle inspected to determine whether any damage is present, it will be performed
at no cost to him or her. If the inspection reveals that repairs are necessary, they should be performed per the procedures referenced in SI B41 04 08.
CAUSE
To determine whether any damage is present around the left rear axle carrier mounting point
CORRECTION
Depending on production dates and severity, one of the following will be performed:
1. Inspection only no damage, all production periods
2. Inspection and reinforcement of the rear axle carrier support with structural epoxy less severe damage, vehicles up to 10/2004
3. Inspection and replacement of the rear axle carrier support more severe damage, all production periods, or any damage on vehicles produced
from 10/2004.
PROCEDURE
During the following inspection, if any damage is noted, a clear digital photo must be taken of the area and then printed and included with the
vehicle file. The date stamp feature on the camera should be switched on.
Before the following inspection is performed, the warranty history for the vehicle should be checked to ensure the inspection has not already taken
place. Inspecting the car for a second time will result in a denied warranty claim.
Inspection:
1. Place the vehicle on a lift and raise it enough to access the area around the rear axle carrier.
2. Visually inspect the suspension of the vehicle and determine whether it has been modified. If any non-OEM suspension parts or non-OEM
wheels and tires are installed, the local market representative should be contacted prior to any repairs being performed.
3. Visually inspect for collision damage that may be the cause of the crack in the rear axle carrier support. If such collision damage is found, the
local market representative should be contacted prior to any repairs being performed.
4. Support the rear differential using a workshop jack and support fixture (Special Tool 33 4 420).
5. Convertibles only: remove the V-strut.
6. Remove the 2 rear axle carrier mounting bolts (the 2 rear mounting points).
7. Slowly lower the workshop jack in order to lower the rear of the rear axle carrier. (The rear axle carrier will pivot on the front bushings.) This
step is required to properly inspect for small cracks located above the bushing, as well as to properly measure the length of a crack, if one is
present.
8. Both rear bushings (1) should separate from the rear axle support by several inches. The rear axle carrier should only be lowered under its own
weight and should not be forced down, or damage to other components could result.
9. Use a wire brush to remove any debris from the area of the body under and around the left rear bushing.
10. Inspect the left rear axle support on the body of the car. The area to be inspected is a radius of A=6 inches from the center of the bolt hole for the
bushing. Most fractures that occur will start at a weld point and grow outward.
11. If no cracks are present, no repairs are necessary. Continue to step 15.
12. If any fractures and/or cracks are visible, measure their lengths.
13. If the crack measures 20mm or less and the car was produced up to 10/2004, it will require a repair. Refer to SI B41 04 08 - Procedure A
Structural Epoxy.
14. If the crack measures more than 20mm or if any length crack exists on a car from 10/2004, it will require a replacement of the rear axle carrier.
Refer to SI B41 04 08 - Procedure B - Replace Rear Axle Support.
15. Resecure the rear axle carrier to the vehicle. Inspect the original bolts and replace them if they are damaged or heavily corroded.
NOTE:
Performing this inspection does not require that a wheel alignment be performed.
