The Next-Generation BMW X5 M Could Debut Early In 2020

BMW needs a quick refresh to remain competitive.

2017 has been a huge year for performance SUVs. In a year when Porsche revealed a new Cayenne Turbo, it only ended up being the third most talked about SUV of the year. That is of course because this is the same year when we finally got to see the production Lamborghini Urus and the badass, 707-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. With all of these hi-po SUV reveals, the BMW X5 M is being pushed further and further into the background. That is why BMW may be forced to replace its flagship performance SUV a few years early.

The lifecycle for a BMW model is typically seven years, but BMW Blog reports that a new X5 M is expected to arrive two years early in 2020. The current F85 X5 M has been on sale since 2015, so it would make sense to kill it off after 2018. The previous E70 X5 M lasted from 2010 to 2013, so the second generation X5 M would also last for three years. BMW plans to reveal the new new G05 X5 in 2018, ending the production of the current F15 X5 that has been on sale since 2013. This new X5 will be based on the CLAR platform, which cuts weight with the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). This new platform should help improve driving dynamics with a lower curb weight.

The X5 M will likely share a drivetrain with the new F90 M5, so expect a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with around 600 hp. All of that power will be sent to all four wheels through a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Expect to see BMW reveal the new X5 M in 2019 and arrive on the market in 2020.

The BMW X7 Won't Launch Until Early 2019

But can BMW afford to wait that long?

Although we’ve known about its ongoing development for quite some time, BMW has confirmed that it won’t launch its highly anticipated three-row X7 crossover until early 2019. The updated news comes to us from AutoGuide, who confirmed the X7’s launch with Ludwig Willisch, head of BMW Americas. Willisch also re-confirmed the X7 will be built in the German automaker’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, production facility, which is "the biggest plant that (BMW) has in our universe."

The X3, X4, X5 and X6 are also all manufactured there, so it makes complete sense for it to be the chosen site for the X7, which will heavily target crossover loving US buyers. BMW is faced with the challenge of making sure the X7 still has an engaging driving experience despite its larger size. Fortunately, Willisch also stated the X7 "will also make its laps on the Nurburgring Nordschleife," so that BMW driving feel should still prevail. The early 2019 launch date actually does come as something of a surprise to us, mainly because BMW is late getting into the three-row luxury crossover segment. The three-row Audi Q7, by contrast, has been around for quite some time.

But the Q7’s third row isn’t exactly comfortable for adults, and this is where BMW can improve things, at least somewhat. AutoGuide also mentioned to Willisch the fact that some brand purists aren’t thrilled with the automaker due to its mass crossover expansion (the X2 is also on its way). "Why would they think that?" asked Willisch. Adding that even its crossovers are more engaging to drive than many of their competitors, Willisch is adamant that BMW hasn’t lost its way. "Hell no!" he added.

Take An Early Look At The Next-Gen BMW 3 Series

The next iteration of the benchmark sports sedan promises to be better in every way.

BMW has been hard at work preparing to bring the next-generation 3 Series to market. And these latest photos of the thinly camouflaged prototype and initial details released today paint the clearest picture yet of the improvements that the Bavarian automaker has been developing for its benchmark sports sedan.

Ever focused on chassis dynamics, BMW tests all its vehicles in the punishingly varying conditions of the Nordschleife. And that applies to the next 3 Series at least as much as any other vehicle it makes, boasting perfect 50:50 weight distribution front to rear.

The new 3 also weighs as much as 55 kilograms (121 pounds) less than the model it will soon replace. The track is wider, too, and BMW has for the first time fitted a new type of rebound dampers to keep everything under control.

"We're using the lift-related dampers as an active set-up element so as to create supreme driving properties in all conditions," explained BMW's driving dynamics guru Peter Langen. "With short spring travel, a sensitive damping response ensures comfortable vibration compensation. When the car passes over large bumps, the body movements are controlled by increased damping forces."

Under the hood, we're told that we'll find (among other options) a throughly revised four-cylinder engine that's both BMW's most potent yet and five percent more fuel-efficient – thanks in no small part to the eight-speed automatic transmission to which it's mated.

There'll be many M-specific components as well, including an optimized sports suspension that will come exclusively with a speed-adaptive steering system. The electronically controlled rear differential is being thoroughly reworked as well, all of which adds up to a new sedan that promises to be better than the existing one in every way.
