Bentley Promises 2019 Flying Spur Will Be More Distinctive

This could be the last Bentley without electrification.

The Flying Spur has become a bit of a forgotten model for Bentley. In fact, Bentley only managed to sell 253 of them in all of 2017. Since being detached from the Continental name, the Flying Spur has struggled to find an identity. The Continental GT has already been completely refreshed, but we are still waiting for the next-generation Flying Spur. According to Autocar's Mark Tisshaw, a new, reinvented Flying Spur is on its way for the 2019 model year, and it will be the last Bentley launched before the company embraces electrification.

While the next generation Continental GT and Flying Spur will almost certainly have some form of hybridization, the 2019 Flying Spur will likely arrive with old school gas engines. The latest Continental GT uses a new version of the company's 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 producing 626 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. There will likely be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 model, though it has yet to be announced. If the 2019 Flying Spur doesn't have any form of electrification, we wouldn't be surprised if it shared engines with the Continental GT. Bentley is targeting models like the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Mercedes-Maybach S600, both of which are powered by turbocharged V12 engines.

The new Flying Spur will reportedly possess similar body styling to the new Continental GT, albeit with more distinct surfaces and sharper creases. Bentley wants to be sure this Flying Spur is easily differentiated from the Continental, so there is no longer any confusion between the two. In addition to the W12 and V8 engines, the Flying Spur may also receive a V6 plug-in hybrid drivetrain later in its life, though it likely won't arrive at the car's launch. Once the Flying Spur is completed, Bentley will focus on the next generation of its design language, which will fully embrace electrification. This Flying Spur will truly be the end of an era.

BMW's New 3 Series Plug-In Promises Longer Range

Expect the BMW 330e iPerformance plug-in hybrid to reach US dealers in 2020.

BMW has so far only shown us the conventional versions of its new 3 Series. But there's a new plug-in hybrid version coming. And it's expected to travel a third farther on electric power alone than the outgoing version.

According to InsideEVs, the new BMW 330e iPerformance plug-in hybrid sedan will boast 37 miles of all-electric range before needing to rev up its internal-combustion engine. That's by European standards, so given the 14-mile range certified by the EPA for the outgoing version, we're expecting about 19 miles by US standards for the new model, which will boast a combined 248 horsepower, or up to 288 hp on overboost.

That'd make it more powerful than the conventional 330i (which offers 255 hp), but less than the M340i performance version (with its 382 hp). Expect it to reach 62 miles per hour from a standstill in about six seconds flat, or just a couple of ticks behind the 330i's quoted 5.8-second sprint (thanks to the extra weight).

The new output and performance figures closely mirror those of the outgoing 330e iPerformance, which didn't have the XtraBoost function. But the emphasis here is clearly more on increasing range rather than performance. Still, it ought to compare fairly well to the competition.

Mercedes-Benz's C350e packs a combined 275 horsepower (in between the standard and boosted output of the new 330e) for a 5.8-second 0-60 time and a European range of 19 miles – exactly what we're expecting for the new Bimmer. While Volvo has yet to release full specifications, it has clearly taken a different (and more potent) approach with its new S60 T8 Twin-Engine plug-in hybrid, which boasts 400 horsepower (415 hp in performance-oriented Polestar Engineered spec).

Expect the latest BMW 330e iPerformance to launch in German next summer and begin reaching US dealers sometime in 2020.

X6 M Promises Improved Handling

Not to be outdone by the competition, BMW has shown that the X6M is setting new benchmarks in performance handling. Going from zero 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, not only is this thing fast, but also quite capable in terms of handling. It has AWD, which BMW refers to as xDrive, and a suspension featuring Adaptive Drive and the M Servotronic power steering. It also has a six-speed M Sport automatic transmission to further enhance performance.

Another cool feature is the ability for the driver to manually select gears using either paddle shifters or an electronic gear selector shifter. Be ready to pay for all of this with a base price of $95,000.

Audi Promises New e-tron GT Concept For LA

The electric "supercar" concept will probably have four (or five) doors

Audi has a raft of new products to show us at the LA Auto Show this year. And most of them are vehicles we've seen. But it does have one trick up its sleeve, and from what little we know, it looks like it could steal the show.

The German automaker says it will unveil a new e-tron GT concept at the Californian expo next week. And though it hasn't released much in the way of actual details, it does refer to the show car as a “fully electric supercar concept” that will bring electrification to the Audi Sport lineup for the first time.

The term “supercar” typically refers to a two-door coupe or convertible. And we won't be surprised if that's the form the concept ultimately takes. But from everything we've seen so far, we've come to expect a sedan (or four-door coupe), borrowing its underpinnings from sister-brand Porsche's forthcoming Taycan and previewed by the above teaser image released this past summer.

In addition to the new e-tron crossover, Audi has applied the handle to a succession of concepts in recent years – including the e-tron Sportback concept revealed in Shanghai last year, and the e-tron Vision Gran Turismo racer designed for the popular PlayStation game.

Ingolstadt also showed the PB18 e-tron concept earlier this year up the coast in Monterey, and did a couple of R8 e-tron concepts that applied electric powertrains to its mid-engined supercar. Whatever the shape the new concept takes, it'll be joined on Audi's show stand by the new A6, A7, A8, Q8, and the aforementioned e-tron crossover – all of which are fresh for the 2019 model year and are now reaching dealers. So we don't expect any surprises there, but the new e-tron GT ought to attract its share of attention when it's revealed next Wednesday, November 28, at 1:05 pm Pacific time.
