SITUATION

The door mirror tilts immediately after unlocking or locking. The mirror position does not correspond to the memory position preset by the

customer. Pressing the seat memory button typically will return the mirror to the stored position.

CAUSE

Poor electrical contacts of the mirror drive in the mirror housing

[NEW] INFORMATION

The problem has been integrated into ISTA diagnostics. Complete the diagnosis test plan using the latest ISTA version. The test plan can be accessed via the following path: "Information Search / Function Structure / Body / Mirror / Exterior mirrors / Driver's or passenger side / Electrochromatic Mirror," and then press "Start Search." Select the test plan "B5116_ECSPPL2."

CORRECTION

Refer to ISTA diagnosis for the required repair procedure.

SUMMARY:

BMW is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 1-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured December 2007 through July 2011; and 2007-2011

3-Series coupes and convertibles manufactured March 2007 through July 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sedans manufactured March 2007 through

October 2011; 2007-2011 3-Series sports wagons manufactured March 2007 through June 2011; and 2009-2011 Z4 vehicles manufactured March

2009 through June 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over

time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to

the vehicle.

CONSEQUENCE:

If there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The

recall is expected to begin in March 2013. Owners may call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed

MODEL

[NEW] SITUATION

The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased

demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints.

In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion, with all results taken into consideration. The procedure as outlined below contains information that will guide the technician to properly repairing the

vehicle and getting paid for a warranty claim.

[NEW] CAUSE

A discharged battery can have various causes, most of which do not concern the battery itself. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the

cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and must be replaced. For more information, refer to www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-42B.htm. For this reason, replacing the battery is not usually a permanent repair. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair.

[NEW] PROCEDURE

Before starting diagnosis, refer to the attached flowchart which will guide you through this procedure, and can be used as a reference guide for all E-Series and FO1/F02 vehicles produced up to 9/2010.

For F10 vehicles and later with advanced onboard battery diagnostics, please refer to SI B61 02 11.

For all models, "Energy Diagnosis" must be performed on all discharged battery complaints. At the conclusion of the "Energy Diagnosis" test plan, a diagnostic code is generated. The exceptions are:

^    "Exhaustive Battery discharge" test plan results

^    "Terminal 30g-f shutdown due to start capability limit"

These 2 exceptions are displayed for informational purposes only, and would not display a diagnostic code. In these cases, the most likely cause is a faulty battery, and this can be determined by the Midtronics battery tester.

1. Fault analysis (Energy Diagnosis)

Complete the energy diagnosis test plan on every vehicle with a discharged battery. There are currently two paths to access the energy diagnosis test plan:

^    If a power management fault is stored, ISTA will select the energy diagnosis test plan automatically.

^    The test plan can also be selected manually: "Function structure > Body > Power supply > Energy Diagnosis."

2. Once the test plan has finished, the number [1] "Most Likely Cause" is automatically displayed if any faults are calculated by the test plan. Finish the test plan by processing all the "Most Likely Causes," starting from [1]. The most recent cause of a discharged battery is listed under [1]. If no "Most Likely Causes" are calculated, the results screen will be displayed: "Most Likely Cause (0)," diagnostic code is undetermined.

3. The following is a list of reasons for a discharged battery, indicated by the results of the test plan.

A. Examples of vehicle faults

^    Battery fault (aged battery - only on IBS-equipped vehicles)

^    Alternator fault

^    Vehicle is not entering sleep mode (sleep mode prevented)

^    Vehicle is constantly woken from sleep mode

^    Closed-circuit current is too high

^    Closed-circuit current infringement

^    Exhaustive battery charge (for information only)

^    Terminal 30g-f shutdown due to start capability limit (for information only)

^    Terminal 30F shutdown due to start capability limit (for information only)

^    Terminal 30B electric fan or coolant pump after-run (for information only)

^    Undetermined

B. Examples of operating faults

^    Lights/hazard warning lights left on for too long

^    Terminal R or terminal 15 left on for too long (this fault may also be set when the vehicle is in the workshop - refer to the mileage that the fault set in order to determine this). Except for the vehicles listed below, the fault is set when the engine is off and terminal R or terminal 15 is left on for more than 30 minutes; and the power supply drops below 11.5 volts for at least 2 minutes. The amount of time that terminal R or terminal 15 is left on is accurate.

^    E65 and E66 (7 Series)

^    E90, E91, and E92 (3 Series) prior to 3/07

^    E60 and E61 (5 Series), vehicle integration level prior to E060-07-09-500

^    E63 and E64 (6 Series), vehicle integration level prior to E060-07-09-500

^    E70 (X5) prior to 3/07

^    Vehicle parked for too long

^    Vehicle use when stationary

If a new battery is installed, the "Energy Diagnosis" test plan should be completed prior to registering the new battery. When the battery is

registered, the stored energy history is deleted. This may cause the vehicle to return if the root cause of the discharged battery is not determined.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

In order to claim an eligible faulty battery either under the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Original Parts Warranty (In-center workshop repairs), the Energy Diagnosis test plan must be performed to completion.

When required, a Midtronics' Battery Test procedure must also be performed. The Midtronic battery tester printout(s) must be retained with the repair order.

To assist you in determining the warranty coverage on a battery, please refer to the following guidelines:

Covered under warranty,

^    A diagnostic code is generated for a vehicle fault

^    A diagnostic code is undetermined

^    A diagnostic code is generated for an operating fault such as unfavorable driving profile (e.g., driven extremely short distances) and the

Midtronics battery tester or Energy Diagnosis results indicate the battery needs to be replaced.

A "Stand-alone" faulty battery is claimed using the battery defect code listed in KSD2.

Other Repairs

If it is determined that some other covered vehicle fault and repair caused the battery to fail, the failed battery is to be claimed under the KSD2 defect code that applies to the failed (casual) component or repair (e.g. Alternator, permanent failure).

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER

DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

BMW centers must ensure recalls are completed after having been notified by BMW of North America, LLC (BMWNA) that a safety-related defect

or noncompliance exists in any motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment in the center's possession at the time of notification. In BMW NA's

case, this notification would typically be made by the issuance of a recall notification in the form of a Service Information bulletin (SIB) or

transmission of a Dealer Communication System (DCS) recall message.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if a recall campaign is announced by BMW NA, centers must ensure

that all recalls on new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are completed BEFORE delivery to the consumer. This means that centers

may not legally deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers with an open recall.

The Safety Act also prohibits centers from selling or leasing the motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment, unless and until the open recall has

been completed BEFORE delivery. This also pertains to vehicles in the Certified Pre-Owned program, and to items of replacement equipment.

Finally, BMW centers should not sell or use parts that have been recalled by BMW NA. Please follow the specific instructions provided by BMW

NA on the return or disposition of the parts.

Recall Campaign 13V-044: Repair Battery Positive Cable

SITUATION

The plug-in contact of the positive battery cable at the front power distribution box (Junction Box) may be damaged by vehicle vibrations, which

cause corrosion and high resistance leading to high current loads. This impairs the power supply to the front power distribution box, and can cause

one or more of the following symptoms:

^    The vehicle does not start

^    Various electrical malfunctions, including flickering of the instrument cluster

^    Brief loss of engine power

^    In extremely isolated cases, the engine may shut off while driving, which leads to a loss of power steering assistance

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves E82, E88, E89, E90, E91, E92 and E93 vehicles which were produced March 2007 to October 2011.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Recall Campaign, first check the

B-pillar label for code number 641. If code number 641 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 641 has

not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on

the response of the system either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION

Replace the positive battery cable at the front power distribution box.

SPECIAL TOOLS NEEDED

PROCEDURE

Replace the positive battery cable at the front power distribution box as per repair procedure attachment to this service information bulletin.

Note :

The tightening torque of the repair cable screw connection on the power distribution box is 1.0 Nm.

If the power distribution box connection shows signs of overheating, the front power distribution box must be replaced.

PARTS INFORMATION

LABEL INFORMATION

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on

top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

The repair described in this bulletin is covered under warranty regardless of time or mileage.

Reimbursement for this Recall will be via normal claim entry utilizing the following information:

Labor operation code 00 60 162 is a Main labor operation.

And, if necessary.

Even though work time labor operation code 61 99 000 ends in "000," it is not considered a Main labor operation.

Prior Customer-Pay Repairs

The updated "Recall-complaint" repair procedure only became available with the release of this Service Information bulletin.

A. A previous customer-pay non-complaint repair was performed and the vehicle is now in your workshop.

All prior customer-pay repairs are non-recall compliant; please follow the procedure below when a vehicle is in your workshop for this repair:

1. Review and verify the repair on the customer-pay invoice (BMW center or other); issue a reimbursement to the customer for the previous

repair to correct the issue described in this Service Information bulletin.

2. Proceed and perform the recall repair outlined in this bulletin.

3. Submit the prior customer-pay repair expense, along with the recall repair procedure, under

Defect Code 00 61 76 03 00:

Retain the "original" customer-pay invoice (BMW center or other) in your files; this documentation may be requested by BMW during the claim

review process.

B. The vehicle is not presented for inspection, but a prior customer-pay invoice is presented.

If your center is only presented with a customer-pay invoice for a previous repair to address the issue outlined in this bulletin:

1. Scan and save to a file a copy of the "original" customer-pay invoice (BMW center or other).

Retain the "original" customer-pay invoice (BMW center or other) in your files.

2. Submit a VIN-specific email to Warranties.special.request@bmwna.com with "item 1 file"as an attachment.

3. Warranties will confirm receipt by return email.

4. Proceed and submit a claim for the prior customer-pay repair expense as follows:

Use the current repair order date and a valid vehicle mileage.

1. BMW will review the claim and supporting documentation.

2. If the claim is approved, the claim credit will be issued through DCSnet.

3. Your center can now issue a reimbursement to the customer for the previous repair.

Crankcase Ventilation System Diagnosis and Measurement

INFORMATION

All current BMW engines incorporate a pressure-controlled crankcase ventilation system. The crankcase ventilation systems use various different

crankcase ventilation valves, depending on the engine type. Although the valves all look different, they function similarly, using a spring and diaphragm assembly to control the crankcase pressure. A properly functioning pressure control valve is designed to maintain a slight vacuum

(underpressure) in the crankcase, which assures reliable crankcase venting during all engine operating conditions. Some of the causes and results of a

malfunctioning crankcase ventilation system are listed below.

Causes of Excessive Overpressure (Pressure)

^    Internal engine damage/wear

^    Obstruction in the crankcase ventilation system

^    Defective pressure control valve(s)

Results of Excessive Overpressure

^    Damage to the engine oil seals

^    Increased engine oil consumption (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)

^    Excessive engine oil in the intake system

^    Excessive engine oil in the charged intake tubes or the intercooler on turbocharged engines (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)

^    Engine oil dip stick is dislodged from the guide tube (if equipped)

Cause of Excessive Underpressure (Vacuum)

^    Defective pressure control valve

Results of Excessive Underpressure

^    Damage to the engine oil seals

^    Increased engine oil consumption

^    Excessive engine oil in the intake system

^    Rough engine idling or engine misfire

^    Whistling or howling noise from the engine (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)

^    Increased mixture adaptation values

Attached to this Service Information bulletin is a procedure for measuring the crankcase ventilation system, using the ISID and IMIB diagnostic

equipment.

[NEW] Specification and actual readings from the vehicle may vary by up to +/-10%, but not more than 5.0 mBar. Various measuring tools may

provide results that are not within specification. All measurements below were recorded using the IMIB. See the attachment for IMIB connection

hints.

SITUATION

Two errors may be encountered when performing Test Plan B1214_DI6KDR - Fuel Pressure Control with the current version of ISTA/D:

^    On the last step when the diagnosis code is displayed, the test plan may state to replace the fuel low-pressure sensor and that a Bosch sensor

will need to be installed.

^    The right side of the test plan screen will provide two incorrect pictures and statements describing the fuel low-pressure sensors.

All of the statements related to the identification of the fuel low-pressure sensor are incorrect. Replace the fuel low-pressure sensor that is identified

in ETK only after entering the vehicle identification number. Do not replace the metal fuel line with this pressure sensor.

This error will be corrected in ISTA/D 3.39.0.

In all audio modes (radio, CD, AUX-In, etc.), the audio output is distorted. It is more noticeable with high bass and high audio volume settings.

There may also be an intermittent interference noise coming from the loudspeakers at low audio volume or when the radio is turned off.

1. Perform a vehicle test using the latest ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) diagnostic software.

Note :

When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

2. Perform and complete the test plan(s) relevant for radio fault patterns.

3. If there are no fault codes stored relevant to radio and/or audio fault patterns, reprogram the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.49.0 or later.

New integration level: E89x-13-07-500 or higher

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.

4. If programming doesn't resolve the issue, replace the RAD2+ radio and reprogram the

vehicle using ISTA/P 2.49.0 or later.

Enabling and Replacing New 0C3 Seat Mat

SITUATION

The replacement 0C3 seat mat (front passenger seat occupancy) will not enable when following ISTA Repair Instruction REP 65 77 6O4,

"Replacing sensor mat (OC3 mat) for passenger seat occupancy detector.

CAUSE

When the new mat is installed in the vehicle, too much pre-load pressure will prevent the mat from being enabled. ISTA/P WILL NOT enable the

new part, and will cause permanent damage to it.

CORRECTION

In order to avoid excessive down time for repair or damage to the new OC3 seat mat, the repair instruction steps must be revised as shown in the

procedure below:

1. Connect the new 0C3 seat mat to the vehicle (without the seat cover fitted). Connect the vehicle to ISTA/P. Select the MRS5 (Multiple Restraint System) from the control unit list for Programming and coding and finish programming/coding the vehicle. The final report should indicate no faults related to MR55.

2. Afier enabling with ISTA/P is finished, install the seat cover and replacement seat mat. Follow ISTA Repair Instruction "Operation for replacing the 0C3 mat in conjunction with padding and seat cover is described in: remove padding for front seat." Connect the vehicle to ISTA to clear the fault memory if necessary.

3. If there is still a problem after the procedure is completed, submit a PuMA case with the title: "OC3 seat mat will not enable" for further

assistance.

SITUATION

[NEW] Roadside Assistance and BMW Online services are inoperative afier programming the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.48 to 2.49.0. The symptoms

are as follows:

^    BMW Online - No network available when selected

^    Roadside Assistance - When selected, a message stating "Service not enabled or contract expired" is displayed. Also, "Start service" is

grayed out and cannot be selected.

CAUSE

Software error in the CIC (Car Information Computer)

[NEW] PROCEDURE

Do not replace parts!

Perform the steps below.

1. Duplicate the issue.

2. Verify the customer has a valid BMW Assist account as follows:

a. Check the TCU ESN/IMEI number in the DCSnet warranty history.

^    If it is listed as "Inactive," no further steps are necessary.

^    If it is listed as "Active," proceed to the next step.

3. Call BMW Assist and verify the customer is enrolled in the services:

^    Roadside Assistance

^    BMW Online

4. If the customer has a valid BMW Assist account, make an emergency test call by pressing the SOS button. Advise the Assist representative that

this is a BMW test call. Ask him or her to verify the following information:

^    VIN

^    Vehicle position

^    All the data is successfully transferred

Then ask the Assist representative to end the call.

5. Perform a Roadside Assistance test call via iDrive. If this does not work, use the BMW Online search function.

6. If both steps 3 and 4 fail, this SI no longer applies. Continue diagnosis using ISTA.

7. If ONLY step 4 above fails, proceed with the following steps:

^    Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.49.1 or higher

^    The I-level after programming will be E89-13-03-502 or higher.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

Note :

When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage reading in the repair order comments section.

SITUATION

A rattling noise can be heard from the engine compartment; the engine has a loss of power; and the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated. One or

more of the following faults may be stored.

E70, E71, E82, E88, E90, E92 and E93:

2D5A - VANOS, intake: control fault, camshaft sticking

2D5B - VANOS, intake: control fault, position not reached

CAUSE

One or both (intake and/or exhaust) of the VANOS gear assemblies have failed; the attaching bolts may have also loosened and/or broken.

PROCEDURE

1. Replace both VANOS gear assemblies. Refer to Repair Instruction 11 36 046, "Removing and installing or replacing intake and exhaust

camshaft units."

2. If the bolts have been found broken, the missing portions of the bolts will need to be retrieved from the engine before the final repairs are made.

This additional work may include removing the engine oil pan, and a close examination of the timing chain drive to retrieve the missing parts. Refer to the applicable repair instructions for oil pan removal procedures.

Replacement of the parts described in the bulletin does not require TeileClearing Authorization.

Refer to ETK for additional bolts and gaskets.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

BMW Maintenance Program: Replacement Wiper Inserts

INFORMATION

The BMW Maintenance Programs allow for the replacement of wiper blade inserts:

^    At intervals of 12 months or longer, only when necessary, for all models The replacement interval begins on the vehicle's original in-service date.

This policy supersedes all other statements concerning wiper blade maintenance replacement intervals (front and rear when applicable).

Note :

There is no required replacement at 12 months.

Wiper Blade and Insert Care

Regularly clean the wiper blade assemblies with soapy water to avoid streaking.

Windshield Care

Wax, dirt and road film buildup on the windshield can cause streaking, poor wiper operation and premature wear of the wiper blade inserts. The

windshield should be cleaned regularly to remove contamination. Use BMW approved car care products to clean and care for the vehicle.

PARTS INFORMATION

It is important to use the "Set" part numbers, which contain both front wiper blades, when available.
