BMW Teases M8 Gran Coupe Render Before Geneva Reveal

The German automaker posted a partially obscured shot of its new 8 Series variant on Twitter.

Rumors have swirled of a four-door Gran Coupe variant of the upcoming BMW 8 Series since the Concept 8 Series broke cover last year. Now the German automaker has given us a sneak peak of the speculated four-door coupe by way of a partially obstructed render it posted on Twitter. Further confirming the automaker's intention of an imminent reveal, the render was accompanied by the message, “Stay tuned. More to come in Geneva next week.”

BMW revealed its stunningly aggressive 8 Series Concept during Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy last year. Expected to be a replacement for the outgoing 6 Series Coupe, the 8 Series Coupe will draw inspiration from the concept, which attempted to visually tie together the brand's traditional models with the radical, green-focused i8 sports car. Shortly after the 8 Series Concept's reveal, numerous speculative renders hit the internet to guess at what other body styles BMW could derive from the coupe—including a fantastical pickup model. A highly-anticipated 4.4-liter turbocharged V8-powered M8 is expected, as is a possible M860 with the supposedly endangered 6.6-liter turbocharged V12 powerplant from the M760Li xDrive.

BMW last built a car bearing the 8 Series name during a simpler time in automotive history. Back then, automakers didn't feel the urge to build two, three, or four different body-style variants from the same basic car. Instead, from 1989 to 1999, the 8 Series could only be had as a coupe or convertible. An M8 model was studied but eventually shelved as BMW didn't see a big enough market for the car, though it did spawn two collectible Alpina variants powered by 5.0- and 5.7-liter V12 engines. If BMW sticks to its planned roll-out schedule, a production 8 Series Coupe will arrive in dealers later this year.

Get Excited For Geneva 2018: A Preview Guide For The Big Reveals

Time to bring out the big guns in neutral Switzerland.

We’re less than a month away from the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and we now have a clear preview for some of the big reveals. New information came to light in the past two weeks that allowed us to put together this Geneva pre-show preview guide. One of the best things about Geneva are the sheer number of ultra-exclusive reveals from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche. Having both Pagani and Koenigsegg on hand ain’t too shabby either. But there’ll also be plenty of more mainstream reveals as well as interesting concepts. Let’s dig in.

McLaren has already announced it’ll show its fastest-lapping production car to date, the Senna. The 660 hp street-legal track car will be shown to the public for the first time, and we also would not be in the least bit surprised to see the spider variant of the 720S, which was revealed last year at this time. McLaren already promised us a “surprise,” so the open top could very well be it. Perhaps something more?

Audi is expected to unveil its fifth-generation A6 sedan and Avant wagon. More than likely, and this isn’t really anything new, the Avant will be an overseas model only with no plans to bring it stateside. We’ll hopefully be able to confirm this on the spot. Expect the new A6 to bear the brand’s latest exterior styling language, courtesy of current design chief Marc Lichte. His previous work includes the also new A8 and several concepts. The A6’s interior will also resemble that of its larger sibling. Sources claim the high-powered S6 and RS6 variants will arrive at a later date.

Bentley may have just revealed its all-new Continental GT at Frankfurt last September, but it know it can’t show up to Geneva empty handed. That’s why the Bentayga plug-in hybrid is scheduled for an unveiling. Exterior and interior styling is not expected to change much, if at all, save for possibly some unique badging. The Bentley SUV will share its hybrid hardware with its VW Group corporate cousin, the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

BMW’s big Geneva reveals are no-brainers at this point. The M8 concept and all-new X4 crossover will be seen for the first time in the flesh. While the X4 was just revealed in full on line, the M8 has only been seen in BMW-released spy shots. Like the 8 Series concept, the M8 concept won’t differ all that much from the upcoming production version. We do expect, however, this new concept’s design to be closer to the real deal given the project is entering its final development stages. It’s also possible, though still unconfirmed, the production-spec Z4 will also make its first appearance.

Ferrari always brings something big to Geneva and this year will be no different. The hardcore, track-focused Ferrari 488, which may or may not be badged as a new GTO, will be this year’s offering and we’re in for a treat. As just previewed with Ferrari’s teaser video, the 488 GTO (or maybe Speciale?) will be a 700-hp mid-engined monster that could very well dethrone the LaFerrari as the fastest street-legal Ferrari of all time. It’s amazing what can be done with a twin-turbo V8 these days. Along with the power increase and plenty of racing tech, expect a new set of Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, 20-inch carbon fiber wheels, and an overall 20 percent increase in aero efficiency over the “standard” 488 GTB.

Geneva is big for Jaguar for this reason: the all-new I-Pace. This is not just any crossover, but the UK automaker’s first-ever all-electric vehicle. Although we’ve already seen it in concept form, the production-spec I-Pace isn’t expected to look all that different, and that’s a good thing because we liked what we saw. Along with a reported 395 hp on tap, the I-Pace will very much carry on Jaguar’s legacy of exhilarating performance. We can hardly wait.

Although Hyundai just revealed its new Nissan Juke rival, the Kona, at Los Angeles late last year, the automaker is bringing an all-electric version to Geneva. According to the automaker, it’ll offer nearly twice the driving range of the Nissan Leaf. And no, this is not a concept but an actual production model. The all-new 2019 Santa Fe crossover will also be making its debut appearance.

Italdesign, part of the Volkswagen Group, will bring the roadster variant of last year’s Audi R8 V10 Plus-based Zerouno coupe. Powered by the familiar 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, last year’s Zerouno was an absolute stunner and we expect the roofless version to be equally thrilling. The new roadster is also expected to be built in very limited numbers, given just five coupes were built at a price of $1.6 million a pop.

Lexus continues its lineup expansion featuring that love it or hate it styling language with its first subcompact SUV, the UX. Revealed in concept form at Paris almost two years ago, the UX will directly face off against the new Jaguar E-Pace and other luxury small crossovers. It’s amazing how fast this particular segment has exploded and Lexus has no intention of missing out.

Last year at Geneva, Mercedes showed its Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid fighter, the AMG-GT four-door concept. It was absolutely stunning, though we personally could have done without all of that chrome covering its massive wheels. Exactly a year later, the production version will be unveiled and Mercedes-AMG has already begun teasing it with spy shots. The super sedan, or four-door coupe if you prefer, is expected to have an output of around 800 hp thanks to its hybridized powertrain. Porsche should be concerned. Mercedes will also be bringing its all-new A-Class hatchback, C-Class refresh, Maybach S-Class, and AMG G63 SUV, all of which have been revealed online.

Porsche will take full advantage of Geneva with the reveals of two extreme models, the new 718 Cayman GT4 and refreshed 911 GT3 RS. Both are powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six, though with different outputs. We've heard the GT4 will produce around 450 hp while the GT3 RS will increase output from the current 500 hp to 520 hp. We've already seen a leaked image of it while the 718 Cayman GT4 was just caught camo-free in some recent spy shots, indicating both debuts are imminent online.

Will Rimac have Richard Hammond on hand to introduce its new all-electric hypercar?. Probably not, but in any case, the Croatian automaker will pull the sheets of what we expect to be called the Concept Two, the successor to the limited-run Concept One. Rimac has been mum on details so far other than it'll be an EV and fully autonomous, but if the Concept One produced 1,073 hp, the Concept Two will offer even more power in an effort to outscore the likes of the Bugatti Chiron. That’s a drag race we can’t wait to see happen.

Only a few days ago Toyota kicked off its promo campaign for its reborn Supra with a single teaser image showing the car’s rear glass and a massive spoiler. Is this the production-spec Supra we’ve been longing after for nearly five years, or a more advanced stage concept? A Gazoo Racing track version? All we can confirm is this: like the last Supra, the new one will have a turbocharged straight-six engine and rear-wheel-drive.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Concept Coming To Geneva

Gran Coupe will follow Coupe and Cabriolet in 8 Series lineup late next year.

The production 8 Series hasn’t yet debuted, but BMW is well into the launch, rolling out a concept, teasers, and a racecar in advance of its arrival. First BMW revealed the 8 Series Concept last May at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (I could just keep saying that all day in my hopeless Italian accent), followed shortly thereafter by a photo shoot of a heavily camouflaged production M8, then the M8 GTE race car in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show (which raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona).

Now word on the interwebs (courtesy of BMWBlog) is that BMW will take the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show to reveal a Gran Coupe Concept of this delectable 8 Series, which will take over as the grand touring coupe and four-door sedan line from the 6 Series nameplate. It will be some time yet before BMW confirms the specs as this will be another concept, but all things point to a range-topping M8 powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 making more than 615 horsepower and a version of the M5’s “M xDrive” all-wheel-drive system.

We also expect to see a more luxury-oriented grand tourer variation with the M760Li’s turbocharged 6.0L V12, a more modestly powered version of the 4.4-liter V8 turbo close to the 750i’s 445 hp and 480 lb-ft, and a plug-in hybrid variant BMW is promising in all its models. And if you’re itching to get your hands on any of these beauties, the 8 Series Coupe should be arriving this summer, followed by the Cabriolet late this year, but the Gran Coupe won’t show up until third quarter of 2019. Oh, and if gorgeous grand touring concepts don’t do it for you, BMW will also have the official reveal of the 2019 X4 and M5 Competition Package in Geneva.

The Electric Car Revolution Began This Month In Geneva

The 2018 Geneva Motor Show proved that the electric car has well and truly arrived.

For a number of years Tesla and a handful of offerings from established manufacturers have had the EV segment all to themselves, but lately things have slowly been gaining momentum. Each successive motor show has introduced us to yet another exciting concept. While not many have made it into production there was the distinct feeling that something big was on the horizon. That something big arrived at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

But it didn't come in the form of one car but in the shape of a dozen exciting electric-powered concepts and production-ready vehicles from big motor manufacturers. Many big names have been testing the waters for years with hybrids and limited-run EVs, but now the EV revolution has truly started with new electric cars that will take aim at the very best offerings in this exciting segment.

Jaguar I-Pace

First off, we have the Jaguar I-Pace. This is Jaguar’s first attempt at a pure electric vehicle and based on early accounts it seems to have nailed it on the first take. Performance from the 400-hp twin electric motors eclipse that of the similarly priced Tesla Model X 75D with a 0-60 mph time of 4.5-seconds versus 4.9. It can also be charged to 80% capacity within 45 minutes through the use of a 100kW rapid charger. The 90kWh battery pack also promises a range of close to 240 miles under our own EPA testing procedures.

As with any electric vehicle, it is the instantaneous torque that makes it feel so quick and with 513 lb-ft on tap the I-Pace should be nothing short of forceful in overtaking maneuvers despite weighing in at over 4,500 pounds. The interior is suitably futuristic but not quite as minimalist as a Tesla interior. The best news though is that it is production ready and coming to the US.

Audi e-tron

The e-tron SUV is not quite production-ready, yet the amount of attention Audi gave its upcoming electric model must have been in an attempt to steal the thunder from rivals like Jaguar. While Audi has been very quiet on the actual technical details, a 300 mile+ range and 500 hp+ power output were hinted at, while the carmaker encouraged show-goers to take pics of their test mules doing the rounds on Geneva’s roads by publishing the test routes. Something of a departure from the usually secretive nature of these tests.

Honda Urban EV

The Urban EV was teased at last year’s Frankfurt show and its retro looks and ultra-modern interior design had many people clamoring for production details. The good news is that Honda has finally announced plans for it to become available in Europe in 2019. The Urban EV promises to incorporate the latest technological features and while technical details are thin on the ground, we do know that it will feature rear-hinged suicide doors and seating for four. It will be the first car to be built on Honda's dedicated EV platform, taking a step towards its Electric Vision for 2030.

Hyundai Kona

The Kona is a production-ready electric crossover that brings the benefits of EV technology closer to the mainstream. Two models will be available at launch, one with a 39.2kWh battery pack and the other with a 64kWh option. The more powerful of the two will be capable of a sub 7.5-second 0-60 mph time and the range vary between 186 and 292 miles, although these figures may change under US EPA testing procedures.

Renault Zoe

The Zoe has been on sale in Europe for a number of years now. It is similar to the Nissan Leaf in most respects although this newer model is both faster and has a longer range than the Leaf can manage. It has 109-hp and a range of 250-miles under NEDC tests. Why should we be bothered? Well, the future of city driving is moving towards fully electric vehicles and the Zoe may well find its way to our shores as more and more customers embrace the benefits of an EV for their daily commute. Taking the concept a few steps further, the Renault EZ-Go concept showcased the future of urban commuting with fully autonomous capability. A car for those who couldn’t care less about driving.

Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo

The Mission E Cross Turismo is a bit closer to reality, and far more exciting for those who enjoy driving. Being a development of the Mission E sports car, it is near production ready. It may have the challenging looks to go with that ungainly name but with over 600 hp and a projected 0-60 mph time of 3.5-seconds, you won’t be around long enough to listen to any bystander’s comments. With an 800-volt electronic system the Cross Turismo is said to be able to fully recharge in a mere 15 minutes, that combined with a 250-mile range should put the frighteners on more than a few competitors when it arrives in 2019.

Rimac C_Two

The Rimac Concept One introduced us to the world of the electric supercar. With over 1,200-hp on offer from four electric motors in each wheel hub, it's quicker than just about any internal combustion competitor around. The Rimac C_Two builds on this concept and now offers over 1900 hp and with it a claimed 0-60 mph time of under 2 seconds.150 units of the C_Two will be built with production starting in 2020. Somewhat uniquely for a car of this type, it is also capable of Level 4 autonomous driving.

Volkswagen ID Vission

The Volkswagen ID has been around in various guises since the first ID hatch of 2016. The latest Vizzion concept may have the weirdest name but it is the most production-like version yet, at least that is from the outside. Peak inside though and you are met with a very advanced cabin, filled with augmented reality controls and a HoloLens virtual interface. What you don’t get is a steering-wheel, or pedals as the Vizzion is giving us a glimpse of a level 5 fully autonomous future.

While most of this technology is some years away, the Volkswagen Vizzion features running gear based firmly in reality. A set of electric motors produces a combined 306 hp and the range is claimed to be an impressive 413 miles on the NEDC cycle from its 111 kWh batter pack.

Pininfarina HK GT

The ID Vizzion may be pretty futuristic but there are always a handful of fanciful concepts that are more about design philosophy than actual mass production. The Pininfarina HK GT concept is just that, sporting gullwing doors, a glowing interior with spacey design elements and seating for four. The four electric motors provide supercar-rivaling performance thanks to their 1,000-hp output, while the 100-mile range can be extended by either a hydrogen fuel cell, turbine generator or even a good old internal combustion engine. The choice is yours, or not, as the HK GT will remain a concept for the foreseeable future.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

Finally, although it is not a pure EV, the Bentayga Hybrid deserves an honorary mention too. Even just a few years back it would have seemed ridiculous to suggest that Bentley would have considered any sort of electrification in its range yet here we are with a PHEV Bentley in an SUV body shell. Combining a 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor it promises up to 31 miles of full-electric driving, although this figure will quite likely be less in our more stringent EPA tests.
