What Is The Secret Ingredient That Makes Everyone Want A Bentley?
You may not know it by looking at the brand today, but early Bentley cars were very successful in motorsport. To keep the racing heritage alive, the company still does a spot of racing with cars like the Continental GT3, but if you ask any anyone on the street with the last name "Kardashian," you'll be told that Bentleys are one of the most expensive and glamorous luxury cars in the world. So what is Bentley's secret ingredient? Is the company just a slightly less prestigious version of Rolls Royce, or is there something more to it than that?
If you look through Bentley's history, you may recall that at one point, Rolls Royce actually owned Bentley. During the Great Depression, demand for Bentleys diminished, and the company couldn't pay its bills. In a bid, the British Central Equitable Trust bought the company. In reality, this trust turned out to be a front for Rolls Royce Limited. Not even Mr. Bentley himself knew that his company was just bought by Rolls Royce. The two companies worked together until the late 1990s when Volkswagen and BMW engaged in a bidding war to buy the brands. In the end, Volkswagen got Bentley, BMW got Rolls Royce, and the two brands were taken in very different directions.
During the 1990s, Rolls Royces and Bentleys were not that different from each other. Today, the cars have very distinct focuses even though both are categorized as luxury vehicles.
Rolls Royces are built with nothing but comfort in mind. Bentleys are also built to be incredibly comfortable but not at the expense of driving enjoyment, an essential ingredient given the marque's motorsports pedigree. When you drive a Bentley, you get the impression that you are driving something capable. We doubt that any Bentley owner will ever take their car to the track, but it's nice to know that your car won't roll around like a porpoise if you ever decide to drive aggressively. Rolls Royces are best enjoyed from the back seat, Bentleys are meant to be driven. Bentley's secret ingredient is the ability to create incredibly comfortable cars that somehow maintain sporty characteristics.
The modern Bentley was created when Volkswagen first revealed the Continental GT: the first Bentley model that was truly built for the 21st century. This car was so successful that it is still in production more than a decade later, and it helped show that Bentley wasn't just a stuffy old British brand that couldn't build interesting cars. The Continental GT was based on the Volkswagen Phaeton, which despite some branding problems was arguably one of the greatest cars ever made. This meant that the Continental was exquisitely engineered. The company didn't just abandon its "old fashion" cars. The company replaced the Azure with the Mulsanne, which is a very different beast.
The Continental comes with VW's highly advanced W12 and a very modern Audi-developed twin-turbo V8. The Mulsanne, on the other hand, comes with a 6.75-liter V8 (now with two turbos) known as the L-Series, which was developed almost 60 years ago. Today, this engine produces 530 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque in the Mulsanne Speed, which shows that Bentley can make old technology work in the modern era. Bentley manages to perfectly blend modern technology and performance with its historical roots and the result is the creation of some of the best vehicles in the world.

BMW Makes M2 Competition Even Better With M Performance Parts
We waited, waited, and waited some more, and BMW finally delivered by revealing the highly anticipated M2 Competition. We knew the M2 Competition would be special, but we didn't know just how special it would be. Gone is the 365 hp 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbo N55, replaced by a 405 hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo S55 from the M3 and M4. Of course, even BMW's M cars can be improved, which is why the company offers further upgrades through the M Performance parts catalog - now available for the M2 Competition.
The M Performance catalogue includes parts for cars ranging from the M5 down to the company's small SUVs. Now, owners can make their M2 Competition even cooler with some new performance parts. Those who want their M2 Competition to sit a little lower can purchase the M Performance suspension retrofit kit, which lowers the car by up to 20 millimeters. The suspensions also includes 12 compression settings and 16 rebounds stages. Other upgrades include lightweight forged wheels and larger brakes. The BMW M Sports Brake System Red includes larger, internally ventilated and perforated discs, which improve thermal resilience.
The six-piston calipers in front and four-piston calipers in the back help stop the car even under high thermal load. Adding to the look of the car is a new wheel design available in Black matte and Frozen Gold. The five-spoke design allows the red brakes to stand out and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide maximum grip. Carbon fiber lovers will especially love the available options in the catalogue. Owners can save weight on their car with a carbon fiber hood, side panels, front splitter, mirror caps, door sills, side skirts, rear diffuser, rear spoiler, engine cover, as well as several interior pieces.
One of our biggest criticisms of the S55 is the way it sounds. Fortunately, BMW will offer a lightweight performance exhaust with rear silencers, allowing the car to be both quiet and loud on demand. Finally, BMW will take a page out of GM's book with the M Performance Drive Analyzer. This part plugs into the ODB port of the car and lets the driver analyze the data of their driving performance. All of these parts add up to make the M2 Competition even cooler than it already was.

Explaining The BMW M Setup Makes It Seem Even More Complicated
To the German engineers that designed the system, it makes complete sense because of course it does. Why wouldn’t it? All you have to do is tap a few buttons, apply some throttle, and the computer does the rest. Right? In theory, yes. But anyone experiencing the BMW M Setup for the first time will likely find themselves a bit confused, perhaps even slightly overwhelmed. You see, German engineers are very good at what they do. Problem is, simplifying everything is not always their strong suit.
Just look at early versions of BMW’s iDrive, for example. It caused many headaches and possible acts of violence out of sheer frustration. These systems, including iDrive, have drastically improved in ease of functionality over the years, but there’s still a learning curve.
BMW M has released this new video explaining how its M Setup works. The driver-teacher is behind the wheel of an M4 coupe and, yeah, his spiel is about as simplified as he can make it, considering the intricate technology. Through the various modes, engine characteristics, and damper control, everyone can find the ideal driving setting and, assuming one can master the M Setup, the car’s full capabilities can truly be exposed. We’ve heard stories of BMW M car owners spending hours reading manuals, online forums, and various other tools in order to better understand the technology that ultimately controls their ultimate driving machine. This video should make things a bit easier for them.

BMW Makes Us Envious With Green Concept M8 Gran Coupe
BMW unveiled its newest edition to the 8 Series lineup in Geneva by taking the wraps off its previously teased four-door coupe variant, the Concept M8 Gran Coupe. While a concept in name, the Concept M8 Gran Coupe will most certainly become a production model, filling the slot of BMW's new flagship sedan. With it, BMW wants to challenge the meaning of luxury by buttressing the liberal use of buzzword “dynamic” with others like “polarizing” and “extrovert” in its release to emphasize the model will blaze its own path.
“The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is designed to stir things up, to polarise – it should move you emotionally,” explained Domagoj Dukec, Vice President Design BMW M and BMW i, in a release from the automaker. “With this car we want to reach people who are looking for something special and who want to stand out from the crowd. Here, BMW M is unmistakably taking luxury out of its comfort zone.” That said, the Concept M8 Gran Coupe is not your typical, fly-under-the-radar executive sedan. BMW gave the Concept M8 Gran Coupe an incredibly unique paint job that'll likely be an acquired taste for most.
Its Salève Vert finish shifts from green to greyish blue, and contrasts with the car's gold-tinted brightwork. Large air intakes and a more angular twin-kidney grille give the Concept M8 Gran Coupe an aggressive face, set off even more by BMW's use of yellow-tinted headlights. Those lights, BMW claims, lift technology from the M8 GTE endurance racer to best light the path ahead. BMW didn't detail powerplants for the new model, but expect an assortment of V8 engines and a possible V12 on production versions of the 8 Series Gran Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe. The Bavarian automaker will give more detail on those cars in 2019 as it rounds out its 8 Series lineup, which includes a new 8 Series Coupe.
