Crazy BMW Electric Vehicle Designs Are Coming To An End

Future EVs will look just like the rest of its range.

BMW was one of the first premium auto manufacturers to offer both hybrid and electric vehicles as part of its model range, and while mild hybrid offerings based on the 3 and 5 Series sedans were almost identical to the gas-powered models, the i3 and i8 were all-new designs intended to draw attention to its innovative powertrains.

According to Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW’s design director, the need to showcase EVs in this manner is coming to an end. Electric vehicles in the future will look identical to their conventionally powered stablemates. “Electric mobility will spread through our entire vehicle range in quite a short space of time - to the point that electric or plug-in hybrid is just another option box you tick as you order the car,” said van Hooydonk.

He did go on to say that innovative design was still a core component of the BMW brand and that the i cars especially, will showcase forward-thinking styling. One-off designs like the i3 and i8 are very expensive to develop and while early adopters are the ideal target market for these types of vehicles, the next stage in EV evolution will need to appeal to a broader cross-section of customers.

Upcoming EVs such as the iX3 SUV and i4 sedan definitely seem to follow the accepted SUV/sedan design mold but they still manage to look fresh and futuristic thanks to subtle yet effective design cues.

Truly unique designs may still be on the cards though, the range-topping Vision iNext SUV is a case in point. It promises to push the boundaries of what customers are familiar with and lay the foundations for the next generation of electric vehicles from BMW.

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Is Coming For The Porsche Panamera

This is our first look at the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe in prototype form.

With the stunning BMW 8 Series Coupe now in production, the 8 Series line-up will soon expand with a Convertible, a Gran Coupe, and, eventually, a full-fat M8. Our spies recently caught the 8 Series Convertible without any camouflage, and now the 8 Series Gran Coupe has made its spy shot debut. Based on the 8 Series Coupe, the Gran Coupe has a noticeably longer platform and two more doors, offering more space for the back seats so rear-seat passengers can travel in greater comfort.

The Gran Coupe was already previewed by the M8 Gran Coupe concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the prototype appears to retain the Coupe’s sleek design lines. Its closest rival in the luxury sports sedan segment will, of course, be the Porsche Panamera.

Inside, expect the 8 Series Gran Coupe to pack BMW’s latest infotainment technology including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.25-inch display and an extensive range of driver assists. In terms of powertrains, the 8 Series Gran Coupe will share the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as its Coupe counterpart that produces 523 hp.

The range-topping M8 Gran Coupe is expected to inherit the new M5’s twin-turbo 600-hp V8 and configurable all-wheel drive system, though some reports suggest the power output will increase to make the M8 BMW’s new flagship M model. The production version of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is expected to go on sale inlate 2019 so we aren’t expecting a reveal until next year, but the Convertible version should arrive before the end of the year.

BMW X2 With 300 Horsepower Is Coming

It won't be a full X2M, but it should still be pretty fun.

BMW recently revealed its latest SUV-coupe model, the X2. The car is pretty clearly designed to appeal to younger buyers and attract them away from competitors like the Mercedes GLA. So far, BMW has only announced the X2 in xDrive18i, xDrive20i, xDrive28i, xDrive20d and xDrive25d trims, available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch. However, most of those options will only be available in Europe, so the US will probably just get the 228 hp xDrive28i with the dual-clutch and AWD.

The X2 shares a platform with the FWD-based X1, which is also shared with the Mini brand. Clearly BMW didn't design the X1 or X2 to be the sportiest models in the range, but BMW Blog reports that there will be a more powerful version of the new X2. Unfortunately, this new X2 will not be a fully fledged M model, but badged as an M Sport instead. BMW has had success with M Sport models such as the M240i, which was formerly known as the M235i. Even though the M235i name was changed, it looks like it will soon make a comeback on the X2. BMW will come out with a performance version called the X2 M35i.

The X2 M35i will make use of BMW's 2.0-liter B48 engine. The new version of the B48 will come with the codename B48A20T1, and produce 300 hp. This is a far cry from the 2.0-liter 385-hp engine in the GLA45 AMG, but it is a nice bump over the base X2. The high-performance X2 M35i should be available in the US by late 2018 or early 2019.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Concept Coming To Geneva

Gran Coupe will follow Coupe and Cabriolet in 8 Series lineup late next year.

The production 8 Series hasn’t yet debuted, but BMW is well into the launch, rolling out a concept, teasers, and a racecar in advance of its arrival. First BMW revealed the 8 Series Concept last May at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (I could just keep saying that all day in my hopeless Italian accent), followed shortly thereafter by a photo shoot of a heavily camouflaged production M8, then the M8 GTE race car in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show (which raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona).

Now word on the interwebs (courtesy of BMWBlog) is that BMW will take the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show to reveal a Gran Coupe Concept of this delectable 8 Series, which will take over as the grand touring coupe and four-door sedan line from the 6 Series nameplate. It will be some time yet before BMW confirms the specs as this will be another concept, but all things point to a range-topping M8 powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 making more than 615 horsepower and a version of the M5’s “M xDrive” all-wheel-drive system.

We also expect to see a more luxury-oriented grand tourer variation with the M760Li’s turbocharged 6.0L V12, a more modestly powered version of the 4.4-liter V8 turbo close to the 750i’s 445 hp and 480 lb-ft, and a plug-in hybrid variant BMW is promising in all its models. And if you’re itching to get your hands on any of these beauties, the 8 Series Coupe should be arriving this summer, followed by the Cabriolet late this year, but the Gran Coupe won’t show up until third quarter of 2019. Oh, and if gorgeous grand touring concepts don’t do it for you, BMW will also have the official reveal of the 2019 X4 and M5 Competition Package in Geneva.

Trademark Suggests Three New BMW M Models Are Coming

New performance versions of the 3 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series could be joining BMW’s M lineup.

It looks like BMW’s M division is planning to expand its lineup with three new models according to a recent trademark filed with United States Patent and Trademark Office. According to AutoGuide, the Bavarian automaker has registered trademarks for the names “M335”, “M650” and “M750.” This suggests more performance-focused versions of the 3 Series, 6 Series, and 7 Series are on the way. BMW recently unveiled the M850i xDrive at Le Mans this month, which is powered by a 523-hp, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

It also features the automaker’s eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, so it wouldn’t be surprising if both the M650 and M750 utilize this setup if they enter production. Currently, the fastest 6 Series is the 640i GT xDrive, which is powered by a 335-hp TwinPower turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine, so there’s certainly room for a more powerful model with over 400 horsepower and a twin-turbo V8. The M750 trademark also implies that a V8-powered BMW 7 Series could also be in development to complement the M760Li limousine, which packs a V12 engine delivering 600 horsepower. Don’t forget an M7 trademark was filed earlier this year, too.

Perhaps the most intriguing trademark filing is the M335, implying that a new M-badged 3 Series model could slot below the full-fat M3. If it does go into production, it could form part of the next-generation 2019 3 Series lineup. Confusingly however, we already know BMW is planning to launch the M340i and M340d as performance models positioned below the M3, so it remains to be seen where the M335 would fit in the lineup. The new 3 Series is expected to debut at the Paris Auto Show in October, so we shouldn’t have too long to find out.

BMW X3 And X5 Plug-In Hybrids Coming Next Year

Both models should deliver an electric range of around 30 miles.

The BMW X3 was redesigned for the 2018 model year and has been very well received. Compared to the old model, sales are up by 60 percent so the future is looking bright for the compact crossover. One common complaint, however, is the limited choice of engine options. In the US, there are only two trims available: the 30i, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivering 248 hp, and the more potent M40i, which has a 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder unit with 355 hp.

That will soon change, however, as we’ve known for a while that BMW is working on a plug-in hybrid version of the X3, as well as the fully electric iX3. If you’ve been waiting for BMW to launch a more economical version of the X3, we have good news for you.

BMW’s CEO, Harald Kruger, has confirmed to BMWBlog that the first ever BMW X3 plug-in hybrid will arrive next year alongside the new plug-in hybrid X5. The plug-in hybrid will serve as an alternative to the fully electric iX3, which is expected to go on sale in 2020.

When it arrives, the X3 plug-in hybrid will use the same powertrain as the 330e plug-in hybrid sedan. That means it will have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor positioned between the engine and gearbox producing a combined 275 hp.

The new X5 hybrid, on the other hand, will have a more powerful 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine under the hood and an electric motor delivering around 390 hp. The electric driving range for both models hasn’t been confirmed, but BMWBlog claims it will be closer to 30 miles in real life scenarios, which will be a significant improvement over the X5 xDrive40e.

Of Course A Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVR Is Coming Soon

And it's main target: the BMW X6 M.

There was no way Land Rover was never not going to do a Ranger Velar SVR. An SUV that looks as striking as the Velar not given the high-performance treatment? Please. Autocar has learned Land Rover engineers are currently putting on the finishing touches, and, assuming all goes as planned, we could see the hot SUV debut at either Geneva or New York this spring. Sources claim it’ll be on sale next October in the UK, so that springtime reveal makes total sense. As for what’ll be under its hood, there was only ever one option: the supercharged 5.0-liter V8.

This time around it’s expected to produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 540 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Expect a 0-62 mph time of around 4.2 seconds. Because of the added weight of the engine, engineers were tasked with shaving off some poundage, which isn’t exactly easy to do on an SUV. Overall curb weight is down, but we won’t know by how much exactly until the debut. A number of chassis and suspension upgrades were also part of the agenda, and Velar SVR test mules have been previously spotted making some noise at the Nurburgring. Also because of the added power, engineers developed a more aggressive driving mode designed and coded specifically for high speed.

The interior will undoubtedly be a work of art, as it is in the standard Velar. Like with all other SVR models, upgrades will likely include plenty of unique badging, trim bits (such as more aluminum, etc.) and other improvements. Pricing? It’ll certainly cost more than the highest trim Velar right now, but it won’t infringe too far into Range Rover Sport territory. In any case, the Land Rover Velar has been a smash hit for the automaker, and the high-performance SVR version will definitely find plenty of buyers as well. After all, it has tons of BMW X6 Ms to chase after.

Bentley Reveals More Plug-In Hybrid Models Are Coming

Every model in the lineup will get a PHEV version.

In these socially responsible times, even ultra-exotic manufacturers are worried about emissions and fuel economy standards. Some have have embraced fully electric cars, but others feel that plug-in hybrids are a nice bridge until EV technology is perfected. Bentley is the latest company to embrace hybrid technology as company CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer pointed out at the 2017 Automotive News World Congress in Detroit. Duerheimer said “From my point of view, plug-in hybrid technology provides the best of two worlds.”

Bentley prefers plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) over EV models because they would allow owners to drive in city centers where gas and diesel powertrains are restricted. They are also capable of going on extended road trips, without the need for lengthy charging stops. Duerheimer believes that the gas engine will be a part of Bentley's DNA for a while. “To cover long distances and to make it from one city to another, and travel long distances in the US, I think the combustion engine will follow us for a long time,” Duerheimer said. The first Bentley model to get a plug-in variant will be the Bentayga in 2018. The next-generation Continental GT will also get a plug-in model after the W12 model premiers and before the V8 debuts.

The plug-in Continental GT will likely use a V6 engine which matches the current output of the V8 model (500 hp). The next generation of Bentley models may benefit from engineering by Porsche, but plug-in hybrid models seem to be a significant piece of the company's future. The Bentayga already has a more efficient diesel variant, but it is clear that the Volkswagen group will move towards hybrids and away from diesels.
