Exchange Manual Transmission - Oil Specification
MODEL:
All Exchange Manual Transmissions for Current Models
Situation:
All exchange (replacement) manual transmissions produced from 9/97 are filled with the new lifetime oil designated MTF-LT-1.
This means it is no longer necessary to perform oil changes on these transmissions.
Note:
The only exception is the E39 M5 (862) which requires a transmission oil change at the 1200 mile service and 1200 miles after a transmission
replacement.
All manual transmissions filled with the new lifetime oil are identified by a yellow label located near the transmission oil filler plug which reads
"Lifetime Oil MTF-LT-1".

Lifetime transmission oil (MTF-LT-1) is available under BMW part number 83 22 9 408 942 (5 liter container).
MTF-LT-1 oil only needs to be replaced or topped off if repairs are performed on a transmission and replaced on E39 M5 (S62) at the 1200 mile
service and 1200 miles after a transmission replacement.
A hand pump has been developed to aid in filling a transmission with MTF-LT-1 oil and is available under BMW part number 90 88 6 002 080.
Refer to service information bulletin 04 03 99 for further details.
Note:
MTF-LT-1 must never be mixed with other oil grades since this would no longer guarantee the lifetime qualities of the oil.
