BMW Hasn't Even Unveiled Production X7 And It's Already Starting On The X8
From day one there was a fatal flaw with Germany’s seemingly never-ending push for niche models that fill each void no matter now insignificant: the fact that when markets tend to become saturated, sales—and therefore profit margins—tend to fall. Models like the 4 Series Gran Coupe or 3 Series Gran Turismo aren’t selling as well as those Bavarians would like them to, but according to what BMW told Autocar, the same rule doesn’t hold for niche X-branded SUVs.
As a result, BMW has turned its attention to studying whether or not an X8 SUV would make any sense. “The sector is growing fast, so there will be opportunity,” says BMW head of development, Klaus Fr?hlich. “It is early to talk about X8, but one of the first decisions I made when I worked on product strategy was to take the X5 and make the X6.” Yes, this is a discussion we’re actually having before BMW unveils the production version of the X7 SUV—the concept of which recently took the stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show—and more importantly, waits to gauge its sales success. However it’s the early bird that gets the worm and BMW is banking on there being plenty of worms in this segment.
Like it does with the X4 and X6, the X8 wouldn’t be a standalone model. Instead it would be more of a luxurious Gran Coupe-like version of the X7 SUV, sort of how the Audi Q8 is the four-seat version of the three-row Q7. “There is room for X8 – especially in markets like China – but there are no decisions yet. Each car must have a distinct character, and these are the sort of areas that take time to evaluate,” added Fr?hlich. BMW is currently evaluating whether it can use the X7’s platform for the X8 without making major and expensive modifications, but you can probably bank on the SUV being a more comfortable and stylish version of the X7 if it makes it to market. Should BMW go through with it?

Does This Leaked Image Prove The BMW M2 CSL Already Exists?
For those who think the M2 and the M2 Competition can’t get any better, well, just wait. Over the past few months, we’ve heard rumors the guys in Munich are planning yet another M2 variant, the CSL. Or could it be called the CS? Of course the automaker is remaining mum on the subject, but that silence may no longer be relevant. Thanks to BMW Blog, this here leaked all but confirms not only this more hardcore coupe’s existence but also its name. An unnamed source provided this dashboard image to BMW Blog, and it very clearly shows the car’s name: M2 CSL.
Now, it’s important we also point out, again according to BMW Blog’s sources, that the green light has yet to officially be given for the M2 CSL, meaning the car is probably, more or less, ready to go, but a business case has yet to be made. BMW is known for testing different drivetrains and configurations, some of which never reach production. Fortunately, the M2 CSL’s chances are good.
Not only has the reception to the M2 Competition been outstanding, but base M2 sales remain solid. After all, it’s M models like the M2 that are keeping the manual transmission alive in the US. But given the M2 Competition’s stellar reviews, there is always room for improvement. For example, there’s room for additional weight loss and more aggressive suspension tuning.
Even the S55 engine could stand to gain a bit more horsepower and torque, exceeding the M2 Competition’s 410 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. After all, this is the same engine found in the current M3/M4 where it produces a maximum of 453 hp and 443 lb-ft. Another thing working in favor of the M2 CSL is time. BMW has plans in place to continue building the M2 until sometime in 2021. Therefore, the M2 CSL could serve as a limited production car to mark the pinnacle of M2 performance capabilities. It’d be one hell of a way for the M2 lineup to end its production life cycle.

People Are Already Trying To Order The Porsche Taycan
Aside from having a new name, we really don't have any details regarding the Porsche Taycan. We have seen the car in concept form, as both the Mission E and Mission E Cross Turimso, but Porsche has not revealed a production version as of yet. However according to Autocar, customers have already started to place their orders before seeing a production version of the car. It seems people are eager to get their hands of Porsche's first all-electric model.
UK managing director Alexander Pollich confirmed that orders for the Taycan have already been taken, but declined to to confirm exactly how many have been placed. “The reaction from customers has been fantastic - from the moment we announced the car to now, when we have asked customers to register their interest for the first cars. The history of Porsche began with an electric car in 1898 and that provides some inspiration and motivation for us. Of course there was a big gap, but we have led with the introduction of hybrids and now we will use our heritage and learnings to offer a class-leading electric car." he said.
It doesn't surprise us that people are eager to own one of the most hotly anticipated electric cars since the Tesla Model 3. Pollich explained that "the next 18 months will be fascinating, as we develop and reveal the car, but what is already clear is that customers are keen. They are talking to our dealers asking how to get to the top of the priority lists and asking to access more information.” Hopefully Porsche can avoid the preorder fiasco that Tesla suffered when it could not meet initial Model 3 demand.

The BMW M8 Convertible Is Already Testing At The Nurburgring
Although BMW has already confirmed the existence of not only the new 8 Series, but also the M8 coupe, it’s still fun to see ongoing development continue. Today, our spy photographers have caught the also upcoming M8 convertible testing at the Nurburgring. It’s actually been a few months since testing at the Green Hell has taken place because during winter months the famed track is nearly unusable. It’s even more dangerous covered in snow and ice.
But it appears springtime has come to Germany so that means automakers are heading back for serious track testing. Notice that the M8 convertible test mule shown here has fairly light camouflage, with its sleek headlights and wider kidney grille in relatively clear view. Compared to the standard 8 Series, the M8 will be a bit wider, thanks in part to the fenders and side sills, for a more aggressive (and appropriate) appearance. Powering this open top beast is the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 tuned to deliver around 600-630 hp. Other M8 additions will include bigger brakes and wheels and quad exhaust pipes, among other things.
Remember, BMW also showed the M8 Gran Coupe Concept earlier this month at Geneva, which will go head-to-head against the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid as well as the also just revealed Mercedes-AMG GT GT63 S 4-Door. Expect for BMW to reveal the 8 Series as well as the M8 coupe and convertible sometime by the end of this year.

BMW 7 Series Already Requires A Refresh Thanks To New Competition
It’s not your imagination. Automakers, both luxury and mainstream, are doing vehicle mid-life refreshes faster than ever before thanks to a continuous stream of fresh competition. It was only for 2015 when BMW launched its latest generation 7 Series large sedan, and it’s apparently time for an update inside and out. Thanks to our spy photographers, we’re able to bring you the first images of the updated sedan with the typical camouflage hiding what’s new. But it doesn’t take much of the imagination to get an idea as to the styling updates.
For starters, look at the front twin kidney grille; it’s much bigger than it is currently. There are also sleeker head lights that, when combined with the restyled grille, give the front end a more massive, sleeker look. Does this look at all familiar? It should, because this is very similar styling to what’s found on the X7 concept. We also expect the upcoming X7 SUV production version to retain this look as well. Elsewhere on this 7 Series prototype you’ll notice a sportier front bumper and a new hood while the rear lights are also updated, though not quite as dramatically as the front. We also have a decent enough interior shot showing part of what’s new.
Compare it to the current model and you’ll notice updates such as a new steering wheel and a fully digital gauge cluster that looks like it comes straight from the 8 Series Concept, which is also on its way to production and will ride on the same 7 Series platform. One last bit of interesting interior information. Look even closer and you’ll see the coveted V12 badge. Previously, we heard a rumor the V12 could soon depart from the 7 Series lineup, but apparently that’s not the case, or at least not yet. Chances are, the prototype we’re looking at is the M760i and it’s expected to go on sale as either a 2019 or 2020 model.

BMW Is Already Planning An X8 SUV Even Before The X7 Goes On Sale
What began with the original 1999 BMW X5 has become an entire lineup of SUVs making boatloads of cash for BMW. We already know the X7 seven seater will arrive soon, but there’s already serious talk of an X8, according to BMW Blog. Assuming it gets the green light, the X8 would be slotted above the X7 as the German automaker’s luxury SUV flagship. Don’t believe it’ll really happen? Think what you want, but there’s past precedent for even-numbered SUVs with sleeker, more coupe-like styling: X2, X4, and X6.
However, BMW Blog’s sources claim the X8 will not be a coupe version of the X7, meaning BMW has even higher aspirations and confidence in the luxury SUV market. Just look at its expected competition: the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and the forthcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Then again, Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW, so it’d be interesting to see how the Cullinan and an X8 will differ in terms of packaging, though they’ll appeal to different (rich) buyers. For now, though, the suits in Munich have yet to make a final decision and are still studying whether there’s a business case. If we had to make a guess right here, right now, then we’d say "Yes." Why?
It makes sense given the growing demand for uber luxurious SUVs. One of the X8’s top priorities would be to give rear seat passengers the same level of pampering as they do in the 7 Series sedan. That means more than enough headroom is required, so a more conventional, non-coupe roofline is necessary. Also expect all of latest technologies and autonomous driving features.
