August 2001

This Service Information bulletins supersedes S.I. 84 06 01 dated July 2001.

SUBJECT

E39, E53 with CPT 8000 Phone; Vehicle Battery Discharged

MODEL

E39 (5 Series) from 09/00, E53 (X5) from 10/00 with CPT8000, in-dash CD NG radio (CD53), HI-FI sound system, and Alpine CD changer

SITUATION

The phone's TCU can stay active with approximately 270 mA of current draw when the handset was left connected to the vehicle, and after the

ignition was turned OFF. This may result in a discharged battery when the vehicle is parked for an extended period of time (overnight).

CAUSE

Software conflict between New Generation CD53 radio and CPT 8000 TCU module.

Telephone "TEL ON" signal received by the radio induces I-Bus communication, which keeps TCU active even with the ignition in OFF position.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis:

1. Make sure that CPT 8000 phone handset is connected to the vehicle.

2. On the affected vehicle perform closed circuit current measurement using adapter 61 2 300 (P/N 90886612300). For detailed procedure refer

to Service Information Bulletin 61 08 00 from 08/00 ("Closed Circuit Current Measurement").

3. If a constant current draw of approximately 270 mA is detected after vehicle goes into "sleep mode", disconnect phone at the connector X400

(natural, 12-pin).

4. If the current draw is reduced to an acceptable level (between 30 and 50 mA) after X400 is disconnected, then directly connect terminal KL R

to the "TEL ON" wire by bridging the pins # 2 and # 11 at connector X400, according to the instruction below.

With the ignition in OFF position, the modified TEL ON signal to the radio goes low, preventing radio unit from sending/receiving I-Bus

commands. The telephone TCU unit monitors I-Bus activities, and will power itself down within one minute after the last I-Bus telegram has

been detected.

5. The modification still allows for a hands-free operation with radio off and ignition on (hands-free operation does not work with ignition off).

187

The following parts are required to produce the electrical bridge at X400:

- repair cable with socket P/N

61 13 0 007 450 (2)

- female pin with socket

P/N 61 13 1 376 206 (1)

E39 phone connector location:

(2) X400 - on top of rear left wheel housing

IMPORTANT:

Make sure to correctly identify the X400 phone connector (12-pin, natural). The adjacent X322 audio connector (12-pin, black) does not have

terminal in pin 7.

E39/2 phone connector location:

(2) X400 - in the left rear quarter panel, behind audio amplifier

IMPORTANT:

Make sure to correctly identify the X400 phone connector (12-pin, natural). The adjacent X322 audio connector (12-pin, black) does not have

terminal in pin 7.

188

E53 phone connector location:

X400 - on the side of audio amplifier bracket, next to X322 (1) black 12-pin connector.

6. Disconnect the battery (refer to repair instruction 12 00...).

7. Disconnect the 12-pin X400 connector, and unlock the upper part of the connector housing (half of the connector with the female pins), as

shown on the illustration.

8. Using BMW Tool 61 1 132 (1), remove the following pins from

X400:

- pin # 2 (KL P), radio terminal (violet/red wire)

- pin # 11 (TEL ON) white/yellow wire

189

9. Tape back to the harness the white/yellow wire with pin # 11 (TEL ON signal to the radio).

10. Cut-off the female socket (1) from pin 2 (violet/red wire), and strip the insulation.

11. Prepare harness repair cable (P/N 61 13 0 007 450), by shortening it to approximately 6' and stripping insulation from its end.

12. Crimp the harness repair cable P/N 61 13 0 007 450 (2) with the existing violet/red wire (1) from X400 by using socket connector P/N 61 13 1

376 206 (3).

13. Insert crimped socket connector into slot 2 of connector X400.

14. Insert the other socket pin of the harness repair cable into slot 11 of X400 (1).

15. Reconnect connector X400. Perform functional check of the phone system [after ignition is turned OFF, the phone's handset should be

switched OFF (LED off) within the period of one minute].

16. Reinstall all removed components.
