The Next-Generation BMW X5 M Could Debut Early In 2020
2017 has been a huge year for performance SUVs. In a year when Porsche revealed a new Cayenne Turbo, it only ended up being the third most talked about SUV of the year. That is of course because this is the same year when we finally got to see the production Lamborghini Urus and the badass, 707-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. With all of these hi-po SUV reveals, the BMW X5 M is being pushed further and further into the background. That is why BMW may be forced to replace its flagship performance SUV a few years early.

The lifecycle for a BMW model is typically seven years, but BMW Blog reports that a new X5 M is expected to arrive two years early in 2020. The current F85 X5 M has been on sale since 2015, so it would make sense to kill it off after 2018. The previous E70 X5 M lasted from 2010 to 2013, so the second generation X5 M would also last for three years. BMW plans to reveal the new new G05 X5 in 2018, ending the production of the current F15 X5 that has been on sale since 2013. This new X5 will be based on the CLAR platform, which cuts weight with the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). This new platform should help improve driving dynamics with a lower curb weight.
The X5 M will likely share a drivetrain with the new F90 M5, so expect a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with around 600 hp. All of that power will be sent to all four wheels through a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. Expect to see BMW reveal the new X5 M in 2019 and arrive on the market in 2020.

BMW M3 Wagon Could Become A Reality For The First Time Ever
Now that the all-new BMW 3 Series sedan has made its debut appearance, it’ll soon be time for the wagon. If reports prove accurate, the G20 generation 3 Series Wagon (codenamed G21), also called an estate or Touring, will debut next March at Geneva. That’s not a particularly big surprise, but a new report coming from Autocar is far more interesting.
BMW is reportedly considering an M3 Wagon in order to do battle with the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate. If Munich goes ahead with the plan, it would be the first-ever M3 wagon. We’re so down for that. Aside from having a powerful wagon to combat its two main German rivals, BMW supposedly sees a solid business case to green light the project.
Because a regular non-M 3 Series wagon has already been completed and the next-generation M3’s (and M4) engine and other relevant details have already been decided and sorted, the development costs for an M3 wagon would be relatively low. Another factor working in the M3 wagon’s favor is that there won’t be (thank gosh!) a new 3 Series GT. Slow sales are what killed it.
And speaking of sales, would there even be enough interest in the US for an M3 wagon? Probably not. Wagons, in general, have long fallen out of favor with the American car-buying public. They all want crossovers and, very conveniently enough, BMW has several to choose from. At the moment, you can still buy the outgoing generation 3 Series Sports Wagon in the US which comes powered by a turbocharged inline-four with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The closest thing to an M3 wagon America will likely receive will be the X3 M. Remember, neither the Audi RS4 Avant nor the AMG C63 Wagon are sold in the US, so it would make no sense for BMW either. As of right now, BMW has not officially confirmed plans for an M3 wagon, but again, the business case does make sense this time around, at least for Europe. Another piece of forbidden fruit for Americans is sounding very likely.

BMW's Upcoming X3 M Could Be Its First SUV With A Competition Pack
It is no secret BMW has been working on an M version of the X3 SUV, which is rumored to pack a 450-horsepower twin-turbo inline-six. This high-performance SUV will go to battle with models such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Mercedes GLC63 AMG, and recently revealed Jaguar F-Pace SVR. We have no doubt the X3 M will be competitive in this segment, but BMW may have a secret weapon in store. According to Motor.es, the X3 M may be the first BMW SUV to receive a Competition Package.

We have recently seen how a Competition Package greatly increased the performance of the M2, so there is no telling what it could do for the X3 M. The report claims the package could add as much as 25 hp to bring the total to 475. This is still off the mark of rivals from Jaguar and Mercedes, but BMW has always been competitive even with less power under the hood. Since the X3 M hasn't even been revealed yet, it is difficult to speculate on how hardcore a Competition Package model could be. Clearly it won't add a completely new engine as in the M2, but it will likely bring in stiffer suspension, better handling, more aggressive looks, and weight reduction.
The X3 M is expected to be revealed by the end of the year, so we should have our answers soon. Judging by how late in the product cycle the Competition Package arrived for the M2, M3, and M4, we doubt it will be available at launch for the X3 M.

There Could Be A Second-Generation BMW i8 After All
Only a few days ago we learned BMW may not launch a second-generation i3 and i8, mainly because of the upcoming i4 and iNext EVs, slated for 2020 and 2021, respectively. However, that news may have been slightly premature. According to BMW Blog, Munich-based management has not ruled out an i8 successor, meaning a second-gen is currently being studied. A new i3 is still not in the cards. The i8 is a hybrid high-performance sports car and, apparently, BMW is not sure whether to continue with this setup or to make it fully electric.

It shouldn’t be ruled out that the i8 could become an all-electric supercar, which is something we’re not at all against. The i8, launched in 2014, was and remains a revolutionary car for the German automaker, with advanced technologies inside and out as well as a futuristic design. Not everyone likes its looks, but there’s no questioning the i8 put BMW in a better position in terms of displaying the automaker’s capabilities. Think of the current i8 as a blue print of sorts as to how the sports car of the future can survive thanks to hybrid and plug-in hybrid tech. Even today, the i8 turns heads wherever it goes and its powertrain is still considered, more or less, state-of-the-art. Of course, the i8 is beginning to lose its edge somewhat due to new rivals.

Even the just revealed Rimac C_Two is something we’re sure BMW is closely examining. A second-generation i8 would also, theoretically, fit in well with BMW’s planned 25 electric car strategy that will soon get underway. Considering the i8 has already made a name for itself, less so the i3, it’d make sense for BMW to retain the car as a technological and high performance flagship coupe and now roadster. By going all-electric, it would not infringe upon the 8 Series’ territory and can further help BMW push boundaries. It all sounds pretty good, right? Indeed, so when (or if) will an all-new i8 arrive? For sure it won’t be before 2020. The following year is devoted, in part, to the iNext, so figure around 2022 or 2023 at the earliest.

Could An Electric Porsche 911 End Up Looking Like This?
Only a handful of lucky people have been given seat time in the highly anticipated Porsche Mission E. The Mission E has been shown off numerous times in varying levels of production readiness, the most recent being the Mission E Cross Turismo. While we eagerly await the arrival of the Mission E, Porsche is also hard at work to develop plug-in versions of the upcoming 992 generation 911. An entry-level plug-in version could slot in right above the base Carrera, while a second range-topping version could be the most powerful 911 variant.

Thus far, we have only seen various spyshots of the next generation 911, which leaves a lot of speculation on what the car will ultimately look like. A rendering artist by the name of Dijan Hristov has imagined what a future hybrid or electric 911 could look like using styling cues from the Mission E. The renderings are clearly based on the current 911, so the overall shape doesn't differ too greatly from the sports car we all know and love. The headlights are clearly unique, and differ from anything we've seen on a production 911. We don't know how functional these headlights would be in the real world, but this is a rendering after all.
The rear design would also be a bit impractical, because the artist hasn't given the car a rear window. Clearly these designs are not intended to reach production, but are simply to help imagine Mission E cues on the 911. We happen to love the rear design, which shows a bit of inspiration from the Bugatti Chiron to our eyes. If this is how a future 911 hybrid looked, would you be happy?

Next BWW 2 Series Could Be Built In Mexico For America
The current generation BMW 2 Series still has a few years of life left in it, but there are active discussions taking place at this very moment regarding its successor. For starters, it appears it’ll retain its rear-wheel-drive architecture despite some earlier rumors saying it’ll switch to a front-wheel-drive setup. That’s obviously good news for purist BMW fans who view the 2 Series as the current spiritual successor to the likes of the old school 2002 and E30 3 Series.
But BMW Blog has learned from one of its Munich-based sources that the next-gen 2 Series will no longer be built in Europe for the US market but rather Mexico.
There just so happens to be a new production plant in San Potosi, Mexico that BMW is considering. This facility will also just so happen to build the all-new 3 Series. Like the new 3 Series, the next 2 Series will also ride on the CLAR flexible architecture. One of the main reasons BMW is probably considering Mexico instead of Europe is due to the ongoing trade war between the US and the EU. While the US, Mexico, and Canada recently renegotiated the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), no such equivalent has happened yet regarding Europe.
Because production planning requires a few years advanced notice and for the necessary tooling, BMW simply can’t afford to wait on this one. Production is currently scheduled to get underway in mid-2021. As far as we know, there probably won’t be another 2 Series convertible due to slow sales.
Interestingly, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will likely launch in late 2019 as a 2020 model, meaning it’ll overlap with the next generation coupe. However, it’ll be FWD and not RWD. Why’s that? It’ll compete directly with the also FWD Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 sedan. All-wheel drive will certainly be optional.

BMW X3 M And X4 M Could Have Over 500 HP With Competition Package
BMW will be premiering three new models at the LA Auto Show in November. We're expecting to see the 8 Series Convertible break cover, and it also seems likely that the X3 and X4 M will debut at the show since both models have recently been teased by BMW.
Last year, BMW M’s boss Frank van Meel said he was keen to give M-Performance SUVs the Competition Package treatment. It still isn’t clear which SUVs will get the upgrade, but a report by BMW Blog suggests the X3 M and X4 M will be available with optional Competition Packages.

Powering the first ever X3 M and X4 M will be BMW’s newly developed twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine codenamed S58. In its base form, the new unit is said to deliver around 450 horsepower, but higher specifications of the engine are rumored to develop over 500 hp.
The X3 M and X4 M Competition Packages are expected to deliver this level of power, allowing BMW to compete with other high-performance SUVs on the market like the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, which both have over 500 hp on tap.

As well as a performance increase, the X3 M and X4 M Competition models should also have sportier suspension as well as visual changes to distinguish them from the regular X3 and X4. If previous Competition models are anything to go by, the upgraded X3 M and X4 M should debut a few months after the market launch of the standard models. According to BMW Blog, the X3 and X4 aren’t expected to debut until mid-2019, which seems surprising given BMW has already previewed both models.

BMW X8 Could Arrive By 2020 To Battle Upcoming Audi Q8
Although the project has yet to be given the official greenlight, BMW is reportedly studying the possibility of a new luxury SUV slotted above the upcoming X7. According to BMW Blog, the German automaker is evaluating whether or not to produce an X8, which would likely target the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and the upcoming Audi Q8, which was revealed in concept form at Detroit. The confirmed X7, which we’ve already seen in spy shots, will be a three-row SUV but BMW believes there’s a market for something even more luxurious and sporty-looking.

Think of the X8 as a sexier, more coupe-like styling alternative to the X7, as is the case with the X5 and X6. However, the X8 could become the only X model not to be built on BMW’s CLAR modular platform. Instead it could share a few CLAR components and underpinnings with the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan’s lightweight aluminum structure. In order to make the X8 relevant in its segment, BMW would also need to ensure its rear seat passengers have the same feeling of space they’d experience in the X7, meaning sufficient headroom with a roofline that dips more aggressively towards the rear end.
Expect to see a 2+2 seating arrangement only; a third-row rear bench, which is optional in the X6, won’t be offered. As far as powertrains go, the X8 will likely offer two gasoline engine options, the xDrive40i and xDrive50i, and two plug-in hybrids, the xDrive50e iPerformance and xDrive60e iPerformance. If BMW decides to go ahead with the X8, don’t expect to see it arrive until 2020 at the very earliest.

Unlike The BMW Z4, The Mercedes-Benz SLC Could Be Living On Borrowed Time
As we recently reported, the all-new BMW Z4 partly owes its existence to the Porsche 718 Boxster. It is the latter that has proven there is still indeed a market for roadsters, albeit a small one. Porsche discovered the winning roadster formula and BMW took notice. Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz SLC, updated for 2019, doesn’t seem to share the Z4’s good fortune. According to Autocar, the SLC roadster faces an uncertain future due to low segment demand, but this does not mean (at least not yet) a replacement has been ruled out entirely.
“These specialty cars have lost their share in our total portfolio,” said soon to retire Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. “For a particularly long time, China has led growth, and China shows little interest in cars such as these.”

Fortunately, Mercedes-Benz is still open to the roadster segment, but the conditions need to be right. “Our portfolio is not something defined for eternity. We revisit constantly, and that’s what we’re doing. Any decisions we will communicate in the future,” Zetsche added. The SLC, which until 2016 was called the SLK, originally launched back in 1996. Unlike the BMW Z3 roadster at the time, the SLK featured a folding hardtop, perhaps one of its most signature traits. Unfortunately for the SLK/SLC, the folding hardtop has fallen out of style and its added weight is not something engineers particularly like.
What Porsche and BMW have done for their respective latest roadsters is to keep things simple with a conventional folding soft top. Combined with a dynamic chassis and proper suspension tuning, both the 718 Boxster and Z4 (test drives will get underway soon) offer/promise a thrilling driving experience. Both roadsters are equally comfortable handling the daily commute or a weekend track day event.

Zetsche’s recently named successor, Ola Kallenius, who currently serves as Mercedes development boss, offered a broader outlook regarding the automaker’s thinking: “We’ve had 20-plus years of uninterrupted broadening of the portfolio,” he said. “In 2022, we’ll have 40-plus models. Even if we love every child - and we do - we’ll be rational. We will not hesitate to slim down if we look at the economics. We will look at the next 10 years and cater to where the market is going.”
For now, the Mercedes-Benz SLC is still around but it’ll require some re-thinking in tune with what Porsche and BMW have done in order to keep it alive.
