IHKA Operating Panel Buttons Are Peeling

SITUATION
The surface is peeling off one or more of the IHKA operating panel buttons, and the button symbol may become unreadable.
CAUSE
Ingredients in certain skin care products, including sunscreens and hand lotions, causes the button surface to peel.

In the picture, you can clearly see how the low fan speed button is just starting to peel. Two of the four fan blades are missing from the button
symbol, and soon the entire symbol will be gone.
[NEW] PROCEDURE
Improved replacement buttons for the IHKA panel are now available as a kit.
Refer to ETK for the correct part number for your model. Replace ALL the buttons included in the kit.
Note:
The repair procedure can be performed inside the car without removing the console or control panel.
1. Use two narrow picks to carefully pry off the button caps. Since the button will be replaced, pay special attention not to damage the switch.
Note:
There are two types of button switches; a rocker type for the fan speed adjustment, and a regular push-button type for the others.

2. In this picture, the fan speed button cap has been removed. The cap is attached to the two individual square openings of the switch
3. In this picture, the driver's side seat heating button is being removed. The cap is attached by four retaining tabs; two on the top, and two on the
bottom. Remove the two top tabs, and then the two bottom tabs.
4. The cap has been removed, and the four retaining tabs can be seen.
5. After all button caps have been removed, install the new caps by aligning them squarely to the switch, and then pushing in firmly. Working from
the center outward will simplify the installation. After the first cap is installed, check for functionality and smooth operation before installing the
next cap. Continue installing the remaining caps in the same fashion.

SITUATION
Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop
visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due."
When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil."
After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed.
CAUSE
Engines that are fitted with a turbocharger, as part of their normal operation, will consume engine oil at a higher rate than a naturally aspirated
engine (non-turbocharged engine).
In this case, a "turbocharged" engine could require topping up of the engine oil more frequently.
PROCEDURE
Engine oil: Topping up
When one of the above vehicles displays a message to add 1 quart of engine oil, BMW recommends adding 2 quarts of engine oil instead.
The engine's oil sump design allows the additional quart; the result is a total capacity of 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) of engine oil.
Engine oil: Maintenance services and engine repairs
When performing all future engine oil maintenance services and repairs that require draining and refilling the engine oil, the new recommended refill
specification is 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) of engine oil.
The current version of the oil capacities chart, in Group 11 of the Operating Fluids Manual in TIS, has been updated as of 3/2013.
The current version of ISTA/D is not correct. The updated filling specification will be corrected in ISTA/D 2.38.
Engine Oil: E72 X6 xDrive50i Hybrid, ActiveHybrid 750i and ActiveHybrid 750Li
Important:
This Service Information bulletin excludes the E72 X6 xDrive50i Hybrid, ActiveHybrid 750i and ActiveHybrid 750Li vehicles, because the
hybrid engine oil pan dimensions are smaller.

When a BMW approved repair procedure requires draining and refilling the engine oil:
^ Refilling the engine oil to the new capacity is claimable with the applicable repairs that are covered under the terms of the BMW New

^ Refilling the engine oil to the new capacity is claimable when a required engine oil maintenance service is performed under the terms the
BMW Maintenance Program.
^ Engine oil top-ups by themselves are not covered.

BMW Maintenance Program: Replacement Wiper Inserts

INFORMATION
The BMW Maintenance Programs allow for the replacement of wiper blade inserts:
^ At intervals of 12 months or longer, only when necessary, for all models The replacement interval begins on the vehicle's original in-service date.
This policy supersedes all other statements concerning wiper blade maintenance replacement intervals (front and rear when applicable).
Note:
There is no required replacement at 12 months.
Wiper Blade and Insert Care
Regularly clean the wiper blade assemblies with soapy water to avoid streaking.
Windshield Care
Wax, dirt and road film buildup on the windshield can cause streaking, poor wiper operation and premature wear of the wiper blade inserts. The
windshield should be cleaned regularly to remove contamination. Use BMW approved car care products to clean and care for the vehicle.
PARTS INFORMATION
It is important to use the "Set" part numbers, which contain both front wiper blades, when available.

SITUATION
Two errors may be encountered when performing Test Plan B1214_DI6KDR - Fuel Pressure Control with the current version of ISTA/D:
^ On the last step when the diagnosis code is displayed, the test plan may state to replace the fuel low-pressure sensor and that a Bosch sensor
will need to be installed.
^ The right side of the test plan screen will provide two incorrect pictures and statements describing the fuel low-pressure sensors.
All of the statements related to the identification of the fuel low-pressure sensor are incorrect. Replace the fuel low-pressure sensor that is identified
in ETK only after entering the vehicle identification number. Do not replace the metal fuel line with this pressure sensor.
This error will be corrected in ISTA/D 3.39.0.

INFORMATION
All current BMW engines incorporate a pressure-controlled crankcase ventilation system. The crankcase ventilation systems use various different
crankcase ventilation valves, depending on the engine type. Although the valves all look different, they function similarly, using a spring and
diaphragm assembly to control the crankcase pressure. A properly functioning pressure control valve is designed to maintain a slight vacuum
(underpressure) in the crankcase, which assures reliable crankcase venting during all engine operating conditions. Some of the causes and results of a
malfunctioning crankcase ventilation system are listed below.
Causes of Excessive Overpressure (Pressure)
^ Internal engine damage/wear
^ Obstruction in the crankcase ventilation system
^ Defective pressure control valve(s)
Results of Excessive Overpressure
^ Damage to the engine oil seals
^ Increased engine oil consumption (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)
^ Excessive engine oil in the intake system
^ Excessive engine oil in the charged intake tubes or the intercooler on turbocharged engines (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)
^ Engine oil dip stick is dislodged from the guide tube (if equipped)
Cause of Excessive Underpressure (Vacuum)
^ Defective pressure control valve
Results of Excessive Underpressure
^ Damage to the engine oil seals
^ Increased engine oil consumption
^ Excessive engine oil in the intake system
^ Rough engine idling or engine misfire
^ Whistling or howling noise from the engine (can be misdiagnosed as a defective turbocharger)
^ Increased mixture adaptation values

Attached to this Service Information bulletin is a procedure for measuring the crankcase ventilation system, using the ISID and IMIB diagnostic
equipment.
[NEW] Specification and actual readings from the vehicle may vary by up to +/-10%, but not more than 5.0 mBar. Various measuring tools may
provide results that are not within specification. All measurements below were recorded using the IMIB. See the attachment for IMIB connection
hints.

SITUATION
After the vehicle is started, a Check Control message "High Battery Discharge Warning" is displayed in the Central Information Display (CID).
Various power supply and power management faults are stored, including the following:
CAS - "930769 Deactivation of terminal 15: upper startability limit reached"
CAS - "93076A Deactivation of terminal 15: upper startability limit reached, but deactivation preventer or legal load/consumer active"
CAS - "93076B Deactivation of terminal 30B: upper startability limit reached"
CAS - "93076C Deactivation of terminal 30B: upper startability limit reached, but deactivation preventer or legal load/consumer active"
JBE - "8020E8 Reset or deactivation of terminal 30F"
DME - "213901 Power management: reduction or deactivation of individual electrical loads/consumers"
CAUSE
The battery has become heavily discharged or is faulty. The following reasons can contribute to a prematurely failing battery:
^ Unfavorable driving profile - excessive short trips
^ Excessive terminal 30B afier run - normal coolant pump or electric fan operation
^ Extremely cold temperatures
^ Vehicle faults - closed circuit draw, sleep mode preventer or frequent wakeups
PROCEDURE
1. Perform energy diagnosis and follow the recommendations of the test plan as per SI B61 13 05
2. Test the battery:
a. For vehicles up to September 2010, use the BMW battery tester. Refer to SI B61 11 09
b. For vehicles afier September 2010, use the advance onboard diagnostics with ISTA. Refer to SI B61 02 11
3. If the results of the battery tests indicate that the battery needs replacement, continue to the next step. If the results of the battery test state to
recharge the battery, ensure that you are charging the battery sufficiently before testing. This can take from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the size
and discharge state of the battery. As a rule of thumb, if the battery was heavily discharged quickly, it should be charged quickly. If the battery
was discharged over a long period, it should be recharged slowly. Refer to the operating manual that came with your battery charger on proper
settings. These manuals can be found in SI B04 23 10.

4. Replace the originally equipped 90 AH AGM battery with a 105 AH AGM battery. Refer to ISTA Repair Manual "61 00... Notes for
disconnecting and connecting battery."
5. Register the new battery using ISTA. Refer to SI B61 15 12. Select "Enter battery replacement: higher/lower capacity."
6. Submit a PuMA case with the subject "B61 03 13 105 AH battery" to get a modified Vehicle Order (VO). The modified VO will have A090
removed and A105 added.
7. Once the VO is downloaded from PuMA, start an ISTA/P programming session and import the new VO into the vehicle.
8. Select "Complete Coding" and program the entire vehicle with the current version of ISTA/P.
9. Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle
Programming.
10. Check the functionality of the vehicle and make sure the "Battery Discharge" CC message is not displayed.

All subsequent battery replacements on these vehicles will require installation of the 105 All AGM Battery.

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation
00 00 556 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
If a control module fails to program correctly or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed with separate labor operations
under the applicable defect code listed above; refer to KSD2.
Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in "000," it is not considered a Main labor operation.
Work time (WT) labor operation 61 00 006 requires an individual punch time.
Even though work time labor operation code 61 99 000 ends in "000," it is not considered a Main labor operation.

SITUATION
Hill Descent Control is inoperative after programming the vehicle with ISTA/P versions 2.49.0. or 2.49.1.
CAUSE
Central Gateway Module software error
CORRECTION
Run diagnostics with ISTA/D. Work through the corresponding test module and then program and code the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.49.2 or a more
recent version.
Do not replace any parts.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

The navigation system integrated in the Car Information Computer (CIC) is not calibrated correctly.

SUBJECT
N63 and S63 Engine: High-pressure Fuel Injector Replacement Procedures

SITUATION
The customer complains that one of the following scenarios has been encountered while operating the vehicle:
^ During a cold start in the morning, the engine runs very roughly and the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated.
^ During a hot start, the engine runs very roughly and the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated.
^ While driving or idling, the engine will misfire and the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated.
^ Various misfire faults are stored in DME fault memory.
CAUSE
An internal failure of the high-pressure fuel injector can lead to incorrect operation.
PROCEDURE
Always diagnose the vehicle using the misfire test plan "AT1214_DI8MISFIRE - Misfiring detection" first.
After completion of this test plan, repair the vehicle as directed before performing any other suggested engine or fuel system-related test plans, e.g.,
"AT1214_DI8KHDR - High-pressure fuel system", "AT1214_DI_GEM - Mixture adaptation", etc.
If applicable, injector test plans "B1214_DI8INJ1_4 - Injectors, cylinder 1-4" or "B1214_DI8INJ1_8 - Injectors, cylinder 5-8" state to perform
service function "AS1214_DI8IGS (injector equalization)," when completed.
Note:
Performing the injector equalization is not intended for vehicles with the N63 engine. This is a diagnostic software error that can be ignored.
This error will be repaired in ISTA/D 2.35.
When the ISTA system message displays: Battery voltage only "XX.XX" V. Please connect charger. Please note the displayed battery voltage
reading in the repair order comments section. This documentation is not necessary when part of an approved Technical Service repair procedure; the
battery charger is required to be attached before performing the Vehicle Test.
Failure to diagnose the engine or fuel system issues in this order can cause an incorrect diagnosis and repeated repair attempts.
1. Terminate the diagnostic session and proceed to step 2.
2. [NEW] Remove the spark plugs and inspect them for over-fueling; compare the color and smell.
a. If at least one of the spark plugs appears to be wet with fuel, replace all eight (8) high-pressure fuel injectors.
b. If none of the spark plugs are wet with fuel, proceed to the next step.
3. Perform the applicable test plan for the misfire fault stored.

If a misfire fault is not stored but a reproducible customer complaint does exist (e.g., rough running shaking, loss of power, etc.), perform the
misfire test plan "AT1214_D18MISFIRE - Misfiring detection".
Follow the procedure below to locate and start the Misfire test plan.
Select "Function Structure."
Select "01 Engine."
Select "Engine electronics, quality control valve (MSV)."
Select "Misfire Detection."
Select "Start search."
Select "AT1214_D18MISFIRE - Misfiring detection."
4. Perform each step of the test plan as directed.
5. In order to bypass the fuel system test plans you must answer "YES" to the following question in the Misfire test plan:
"Has troubleshooting on the following function or component group been conducted in response to a misfire fault?"
6. At the conclusion of the test plan the following question may be displayed "Have injectors already been replaced due to misfires within the last 4
months? Select "NO" and continue.
7. The shown screen will advise the replacement of all 8 injectors. Use P/N 13 53 8 616 079 when replacing all 8 injectors.

The BMW Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty applies to BMW CPO vehicles that are still within the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Limited
Warranty, but beyond Emissions Warranty coverage that applies.
Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a main labor operation. If you are using a main labor code for another repair, use the plus code labor operation 00
00 556 instead.
Even though work time labor operation code 61 00 006 ends in "006," it is not considered a Main labor operation.
Work time (WT) labor operation 61 00 006 requires an individual punch time. and
Performing Procedure Steps # 1 and # 2 (The "misfire" test plan advises you to perform any "fuel system" test plans)
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN). Click on the "Search" button, and then enter the applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

Other Repairs
If performing other ISTA diagnostics and their related test plans results with eligible and covered work, claim this work with the applicable defect
code and labor operations listed in KSD2.

Discharged Battery: Energy Diagnosis Must Be Performed

[NEW] SITUATION
The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased
demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle "discharged battery" complaints.
In order to properly repair the vehicle the first time in the workshop, it is very important that the diagnostic test plans are performed to completion,
with all results taken into consideration. The procedure as outlined below contains information that will guide the technician to properly repairing the
vehicle and getting paid for a warranty claim.
[NEW] CAUSE
A discharged battery can have various causes, most of which do not concern the battery itself. A failed battery is often the symptom and not the
cause. A fully serviceable battery fails when an electrical component causes the battery to discharge; the battery becomes internally damaged and
must be replaced. For more information, refer to www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-42B.htm. For this reason, replacing the battery is not usually a
permanent repair. The cause of the discharged battery must be analyzed in order to guarantee a proper repair.
[NEW] PROCEDURE
Before starting diagnosis, refer to the attached flowchart which will guide you through this procedure, and can be used as a reference guide for all
E-Series and FO1/F02 vehicles produced up to 9/2010.
For F10 vehicles and later with advanced onboard battery diagnostics, please refer to SI B61 02 11.
For all models, "Energy Diagnosis" must be performed on all discharged battery complaints. At the conclusion of the "Energy Diagnosis" test plan, a
diagnostic code is generated. The exceptions are:
^ "Exhaustive Battery discharge" test plan results
^ "Terminal 30g-f shutdown due to start capability limit"
These 2 exceptions are displayed for informational purposes only, and would not display a diagnostic code. In these cases, the most likely cause is a
faulty battery, and this can be determined by the Midtronics battery tester.
1. Fault analysis (Energy Diagnosis)
Complete the energy diagnosis test plan on every vehicle with a discharged battery. There are currently two paths to access the energy diagnosis

test plan:
^ If a power management fault is stored, ISTA will select the energy diagnosis test plan automatically.
^ The test plan can also be selected manually: "Function structure > Body > Power supply > Energy Diagnosis."
2. Once the test plan has finished, the number [1] "Most Likely Cause" is automatically displayed if any faults are calculated by the test plan. Finish
the test plan by processing all the "Most Likely Causes," starting from [1]. The most recent cause of a discharged battery is listed under [1]. If no
"Most Likely Causes" are calculated, the results screen will be displayed: "Most Likely Cause (0)," diagnostic code is undetermined.
3. The following is a list of reasons for a discharged battery, indicated by the results of the test plan.
A. Examples of vehicle faults
^ Battery fault (aged battery - only on IBS-equipped vehicles)
^ Alternator fault
^ Vehicle is not entering sleep mode (sleep mode prevented)
^ Vehicle is constantly woken from sleep mode
^ Closed-circuit current is too high
^ Closed-circuit current infringement
^ Exhaustive battery charge (for information only)
^ Terminal 30g-f shutdown due to start capability limit (for information only)
^ Terminal 30F shutdown due to start capability limit (for information only)
^ Terminal 30B electric fan or coolant pump after-run (for information only)
^ Undetermined
B. Examples of operating faults
^ Lights/hazard warning lights left on for too long
^ Terminal R or terminal 15 left on for too long (this fault may also be set when the vehicle is in the workshop - refer to the mileage that the
fault set in order to determine this). Except for the vehicles listed below, the fault is set when the engine is off and terminal R or terminal 15
is left on for more than 30 minutes; and the power supply drops below 11.5 volts for at least 2 minutes. The amount of time that terminal R or
terminal 15 is left on is accurate.
^ E65 and E66 (7 Series)
^ E90, E91, and E92 (3 Series) prior to 3/07
^ E60 and E61 (5 Series), vehicle integration level prior to E060-07-09-500
^ E63 and E64 (6 Series), vehicle integration level prior to E060-07-09-500
^ E70 (X5) prior to 3/07
^ Vehicle parked for too long
^ Vehicle use when stationary
If a new battery is installed, the "Energy Diagnosis" test plan should be completed prior to registering the new battery. When the battery is
registered, the stored energy history is deleted. This may cause the vehicle to return if the root cause of the discharged battery is not determined.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
In order to claim an eligible faulty battery either under the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Original Parts Warranty
(In-center workshop repairs), the Energy Diagnosis test plan must be performed to completion.
When required, a Midtronics' Battery Test procedure must also be performed. The Midtronic battery tester printout(s) must be retained with the
repair order.
To assist you in determining the warranty coverage on a battery, please refer to the following guidelines:

Covered under warranty,
^ A diagnostic code is generated for a vehicle fault
^ A diagnostic code is undetermined
^ A diagnostic code is generated for an operating fault such as unfavorable driving profile (e.g., driven extremely short distances) and the
Midtronics battery tester or Energy Diagnosis results indicate the battery needs to be replaced.
A "Stand-alone" faulty battery is claimed using the battery defect code listed in KSD2.
Other Repairs
If it is determined that some other covered vehicle fault and repair caused the battery to fail, the failed battery is to be claimed under the KSD2
defect code that applies to the failed (casual) component or repair (e.g. Alternator, permanent failure).

^ A diagnostic code is generated for an operating fault such as leaving the lights on, vehicle parked too long, battery not maintained etc.
