BMW To Build More SUVs In China Because Of Tariffs?

A decision will come very soon.

Ever since the trade war and resulting tariffs between the US and China began several months ago, automakers had to react in order to protect their business interests. BMW is no exception. Although its Spartanburg, South Carolina production plant, home to the X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7, has been a huge success story, the trade conflict between America and China could have a negative impact.

According to Reuters, BMW is only a few weeks away from making a decision regarding building more SUVs in China in order to minimize the damage of lost revenue. Those tariffs are expected to hurt the German automaker’s 2018 earnings by around $344 million.

The most obvious solution to fixing that for 2019 would be to increase SUV production, specifically the X3, in China to avoid those tariffs entirely. “We will take a final decision in the coming weeks about which model to localize next in China,” Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter said.

In fact, Peter also noted that X3 sales have actually increased ever since BMW began producing it in Asia as well. It no longer needs to rely so much on export from the US. Would BMW’s decision to shift more X3 production from the US to China hurt American jobs? Unknown. But again, BMW needs to look out for its greater interests and all the more so when it involves one of its best-selling models.

If it costs some jobs at one factory then so be it. “If the tariffs undermine the competitiveness of BMW production and sales in the US, the result could be strongly reduced export volumes with negative effects on investments and jobs in the US,” according to BMW spokesman Kenn Sparks. The X3 is not the only volume seller that could see a partial production shift to China; the X5 is also a candidate.

Earlier this year BMW stopped exporting the X3 from the US to China, so this whole tariff war thing is very real. Just last month, BMW announced it was spending $4.2 billion to take full control of its main joint venture in China, a clear-cut sign the automaker will soon become less reliant on Spartanburg.

In 2017, Spartanburg built over 370,000 SUVs and more than 270,000 of those were exported to China and other overseas markets. Spartanburg should be okay in the immediate future thanks to increased US demand for SUVs and the all-new X7, of which it will be the sole producer. Nevertheless, Spartanburg’s star status has just taken a hit.

BMW iX3 Will Be Built In China

BMW announced this week that it would start building more of its SUVs in China due to the recently enacted 40% import tax on cars sent there from the U.S. This massive increase was done in reaction to the Trump administration imposing import tariffs on Chinese products. Currently BMW is the largest exporter of cars in the U.S. and it makes the X3, X4, X5 and X6 SUVs at its Spartanburg plant. Employing 10,000 workers, BMW says that production numbers won’t be affected but with the recent announcement that the upcoming iX3 will also be built in China.

China Lowers Trade Tariffs On Foreign Vehicles And Auto Parts

Donald Trump must be ecstatic.

The United States and China have been slowly creeping towards a trade war, which has effected the cost and availability of automobiles. Not only has China imposed a 25% tariff on foreign cars, it has also held several cars at port. The 25% tariff has effected GM, which produces the CT6 hybrid in China. The high tariffs have also greatly impacted European automakers, although the issue is about to improve. According to Reuter's Adam Jourdan, China will cut its tariffs to allow for greater access to its enormous automotive market.

Starting on July 1, 2018, the tariff will be cut from 25% to 15% for most vehicles. The Chinese Ministry of Finance said in a statement that the move is to spur development in the local auto sector. Initially, the move will mainly help premium brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla. BMW said this is a "strong signal that China will continue to open up," and Audi said it was looking forward to "further liberalization and opening" of the Chinese market. A Nissan executive also added that the "Benefits are huge for our business, especially Infiniti." The German cars will be the biggest beneficiaries, due to the sheer number of cars they sell.

The reduced tariffs will help foreign automakers compete with local Chinese automakers on price. Toyota said it would reduce prices on cars that benefited from lower tariffs in order to be more competitive. China will also reduce the tariff on auto parts from 10% down to 6%. Donald Trump has been opposed to trade tariffs with China, so this news should make him very happy. US trade talks with China will continue, with working plans to eliminate China's long-standing rules on foreign ownership of businesses.

These Two USA-Made BMWs Have Just Become More Expensive In China

The additional cost of tariffs has to be made up for somehow.

It has begun. Some of the first US-made vehicles being exported to China are experiencing price increases due to the additional costs of tariffs on US car imports. Reuters reports that the Spartanburg, South Carolina-built BMW X5 and X6 crossover SUVs, both very popular in the world’s biggest auto market, have increased in price by 4 to 7 percent, effective starting today in China.

Interestingly, some industry analysts figured the expected price increases would have been more, but BMW is apparently willing to absorb most of the higher costs. How come? Because there’s fierce competition among luxury brands in China and adding too much to the price tags is not in BMW’s best interest.

The automaker has no choice but to do something in regards to a price increase ever since China began imposing new tariffs earlier this month on roughly $34 billion of US imports, which also includes soybeans and even lobsters. For US-built vehicles, China also added an extra 25 percent import levy starting July 6. This means China now has a 40 percent total import duty on all cars from the US. BMW doesn’t appear to be too pleased by this latest development, with a spokeswoman telling Reuters: “BMW stands for free (trade) but can’t stand still without taking actions to respond to the market changes.”

Spartanburg also builds the popular X4, which is also imported to China. For now, it doesn’t appear BMW has increased its price tag, but that could change in the near future. Not surprisingly, BMW isn’t alone in its dilemma of racing prices and trying to absorb most costs. Ford has already said that, for the time being, it won’t increase its prices in China and will absorb costs in an “effort to sustain its business momentum.” BMW’s arch-rival, Mercedes-Benz, slightly increased the price of the GLE midsize SUV in China, which is built in Alabama. Chances are we haven’t heard the last of US-built auto price increases in the world’s biggest auto market.

What The Heck Is Going On With BMW And Mercedes Brakes In China?

Both companies have had SUVs stopped at the port.

Trade tensions with China have been heating up in the past several months, causing issues for imported cars entering China. We have already seen Ford experience holdups at the Chinese port and now both BMW and Mercedes have experienced issues, according to Automotive News. All of the SUVs that were held at port were built in the US either at Mercedes' plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama or BMW's plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which may partially explain the holdup.

Reports indicate that Mercedes GLS and GLE models built in the US between May 4 and June 12, 2018, may have a "safety risk," according to a Chinese customs document. Authorities in Shanghai claimed that the rear brakes on the cars were "insufficient." BMW similarly had to hold cars at the Chinese port, though this issue was in regards to a recall of approximately 19,000 X3 and X4 vehicles. The recall affects vehicles built between mid-April to the end of June and was triggered by faulty brakes from a supplier.

Both BMW and Mercedes are working to rectify the respective issues so the SUVs can be sold in China. These may be minor issues, but with the current trade tension between the US and China, little issues like these may be more highly scrutinized when the cars in question were built in the US.

Bentley Flying Spur Heads to China

The Bentley Flying Spur may have a W12 engine, but for Chinese buyers the rear seats and its cushy features are the main attraction.

The new Bentley Flying Spur is quite a machine and is undoubtedly one of the finest luxury sedans in the world. Powered by a 6.0-liter W12 with 616 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, the new model dropped the "Continental" from its name, leaving that solely to its two-door counterpart. As Motor Trend feature writer Jonny Lieberman notes, it’s a good-looking sedan that comes with tons of power and plenty of amenities. Thing is, it’s being launched in China, a country where the rich prefer to be chauffeured around instead of being behind the wheel.

As such, Bentley focused a lot of attention into the layout and features of the rear passenger area and seats, such as a fridge that’s ideal for a bottle of champagne. Heck, even the upgraded audio system costs $7,500.

China Poised To Beat Europe In Electric Car Race

Europe may as well go where the customers are.

It seems like every time an auto show rolls around, we hear about the latest Chinese automaker that is ready to conquer Tesla and eventually sell electric vehicles in the United States. While some are vaporware, it's hard to ignore how big of a role China will play in the coming years as EVs become more popular. While only 1% will actually succeed, there are so many startups in the EV sector that actually equates to a substantial number.

European automakers like BMW have also enlisted the help of Chinese partners for EV production. Some reports, including a recent one from CNN, say that Europe may simply need to give up in the race towards EVs and focus on building cars in China.

When speaking about EV production, Simone Tagliapietra, an energy analyst at a Milan-based think tank said, "Europe might well see its carmakers massively moving production to China in the future." Building electric cars in China would place European automakers closer to their potential customers and avoid any tariffs.

China is also where most of the batteries for EVs are produced, so "it just makes sense to produce electric vehicles where batteries are also produced," Tagliapietra said. Currently, two-thirds of lithium-ion batteries are produced in China. Only around 1% of these batteries are produced in Europe and it would take a huge investment in order to catch up.

China also holds the advantage as the world's largest market for electric cars. With the massive pollution issues in China, EVs will soon become more of a necessity than a luxury. Even Volkswagen and Tesla have announced plans to build factories in China, showing how viable the country is for EV production.

Europe is trying to become more friendly towards EV production but it simply cannot match China. "In Europe, there's a lot of hassle and a lot of procedures to follow. It takes a long time," said Kee Koolen, chairman of Lithium Werks, adding that China has a "long-term vision" for EV production, while Europe does not.

Automakers in Europe didn't take EVs seriously initially and will now have to play catch up with China. European automakers are finally launching new EV models including the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC, and Audi e-Tron but it may already be too late to catch up with China.

Did Trump And China Make A Deal On Car Tariffs?

Trump wrote a late-night tweet. China remains silent.

By now everyone is aware of the ongoing trade war between the US and China. President Trump made the first strike months ago when he imposed tariffs on imported Chinese goods. China responded in kind, and its response hurt. It tacked on tariffs for US-made cars imported to China and American automakers were not happy, to say the least. However, it appears a deal of some sort has been made.

Trump wrote on Twitter that “China has agreed to reduce and remove tariffs on cars coming into China from the U.S. Currently the tariff is 40%.”

Little else has since been said by the president. China hasn’t said a thing. But already shares of German automakers like BMW and Daimler have rallied following Trump’s comment. Tesla will also be very happy about this deal because it desperately needs China’s business. Although it is about to begin construction of a new plant in China, Tesla will still need to import vehicles for the foreseeable future. Just last week, China said that tariffs on US-built cars would be 15 percent if not for the ongoing trade dispute. Instead, it called for negotiations with the goal of ending the trade war.

Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping recently met face to face at the G20 summit in Argentina and it appears that meeting was fruitful. If there’s no deal in place, then there’ll be a 15 percent to 25 percent increase of some $200 billion worth of Chinese-made products at the beginning of next year. That’s less than one month from now. Fortunately, it sure sounds like something positive is happening.

Trump also tweeted the following: “My meeting in Argentina with President Xi of China was an extraordinary one. Relations with China have taken a BIG leap forward! Very good things will happen. We are dealing from great strength, but China likewise has much to gain if and when a deal is completed. Level the field!” We’ll update this space if and when an official announcement is made.
