Porsche Buys 10 Percent Stake In Electric Supercar Maker Rimac

With Rimac and Porsche joining forces, just imagine what a fully electric 911 will be capable of.

Croatian company Rimac has quickly established itself as the leading developer of electric supercars. Established in 2009, company founder and CEO Mate Rimac began working on his vision to revolutionize the electric car industry in his garage. Rimac’s first supercar, the Concept_One, may be infamous for nearly killing Richard Hammond while filming for The Grand Tour, but the publicity the accident generated was invaluable for the company. Everyone now knows Rimac.

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Rimac shook up the auto industry with the C_Two, a 1,914-hp electric supercar capable of hitting 0-62 mph in 1.85 seconds, making it faster than the Tesla Roadster. Clearly, this incredible car caught the attention of Porsche, because the automaker has now bought a 10 percent stake in Rimac not long after naming its first EV, the Taycan. Porsche hasn’t specified any plans following the investment, but said it hopes to enter a "close collaboration" with Rimac in the future.

“By developing the purely electric two-seaters super sports cars, like the ‘Concept One’ or ‘C Two’, as well as core vehicle systems, Rimac has impressively demonstrated its credentials in the field of electromobility”, said Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT at Porsche. "We feel that Rimac’s ideas and approaches are extremely promising, which is why we hope to enter into close collaboration with the company in the form of a development partnership.” The news may come as a surprise, but Rimac has worked with other automakers having developed battery technology for leading supercar makers such as Aston Martin and Koenigsegg.

It’s too early to tell how the two companies will collaborate, but it’s an exciting development for the EV world. With Porsche and Rimac joining forces, just imagine what a fully electric 911 will be capable of. “This partnership now is an important step for Rimac on our way to become a component and system supplier of choice for the industry in electrification, connectivity and the exciting field of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems”, company CEO Mate Rimac said.

For The Millionth Time, BMW Is Not And Will Not Be Building A Supercar

In case BMW didn't say so clearly enough last time, here you go.

BMW and McLaren have collaborated in the past on a supercar, and for some reason that historic connection seems to make everyone think that the two automakers are going to do it again. It’s either that or the fact that many fans tend to bunch BMW and Mercedes into the same lump of clay, and given that the Tri-Star is building both supercars and hypercars out of sheer need for dominance, the crowds expect BMW to follow suit.

Not so, said BMW Director of Sales and Marketing, Dr Ian Robertson in an interview with Motoring. While other automakers are using their talents to roll out dream machines that can lap the Nurburgring 0.00001 seconds faster than the competitor, BMW is chasing the dollars. Low volume supercars don’t tend to attract those too well. What does make money are the high-volume halfway sports cars, much like what BMW’s M Sport line produces. According to Robertson, M is way too busy working on those cars and tending to the current M flock to focus on a standalone supercar. “We have no plan at the moment for a stand alone M car, like Audi or AMG,” said Robertson.

“M is simply too busy. If you look at M and the work it has done, a lot of the development has been with M Performance, and it’s the same with i and the plug-in hybrids over pure electric vehicles,” he followed, referencing how BMW’s i brand has also been quiet due to being busy electrifying the rest of the lineup. For those wondering why BMW’s M can’t just do both given that AMG is busy with the R50 hypercar, the AMG GT, and the bevy of AMG 43 and 63 models it has coming out, Robertson has another answer: he doesn’t want to jeopardize the i8 and all that it stands for.

The hybrid sports car is a symbol that BMW is focusing its efforts on the future, and to build a conventional supercar would be a step backwards. “I was clear with my mind that if we were bringing in an i8, we should not have another one based on it or competing with it from M,” claimed Robertson. “The i8 is a completely new interpretation of sports cars. We should never confuse that.” Like it or not, it appears that we’re stuck with BMW’s current crop of souped-up sedans, coupes, and SUVs. It’s not a bad thing considering how good cars like the M2 and X6 M are, but it sure isn’t as exciting as what’s going on at Mercedes’ AMG fiesta.

Will BMW Ever Build A Proper Supercar Again?

BMW's Head of Design hasn't said yes. But crucially, they haven't say no either.

BMW must be getting tired of being asked when it’s bringing out a new supercar – and no, the i8 hybrid doesn’t qualify. The fact remains that there hasn’t been a proper BMW supercar since the beloved M1. And that was 40 years ago. In the future, we’ll start to see a change in design direction from the Bavarian automaker. While new cars like the new G30 BMW 5 Series have been criticized for looking uninspired and too similar to its predecessor, BMW has recently shown off some genuinely stunning concepts like the 8 Series Concept and Z4 Concept.

Best of all, the production versions apparently should look very similar to the concepts. BMWBlog recently caught up with BMW’s new Head of Design Jozef Kaban to find out more about BMW’s new design direction and the possibility of a new supercar. Kaban joined BMW’s design team around a year ago after leaving Volkswagen where he worked on designing the Bugatti Veyron. Yes you read that right, the designer of one of the most iconic supercars ever made is Head of Design at BMW. BMW has often been criticized for producing models that are difficult to tell apart, but the plan is to introduce more distinctive models to broaden BMW’s line-up.

“With the portfolio of the brand, we’ve had [an opportunity] to talk to customers, and I think with this portfolio, we’re planning in the future to split them a little bit, to diverse them a little bit,” he said. This is great news for BMW fans. But is there any hope of BMW ever building a supercar, considering its Head of Design once worked on the Bugatti Veyron? “I came to BMW to help with other thinking, to give them another opportunity to think about [new] things.” he said. “BMW is doing great cars, maybe there is space to dream about the next [new car], maybe something more extreme.” By no means is this confirmation that a BMW supercar is happening, but it wasn’t a flat-out no, either.

BMW also recently revealed that it’s considering producing a more powerful version of the i8 coupe that could push the hybrid sports car into supercar territory.

Explosive Boom In Supercar Sales A Sign Of How Bad Wealth Inequality Has Become

“Let them eat cake” has become “Let them commute in McLarens.”

Documentary filmmakers and news reporters have tried time and time again to utilize their respective forms of storytelling to show us how income and wealth inequality has flown off the charts in recent years. GDP continues to grow but somehow the poor are still poor and getting poorer. Surprise surprise, that money is finding its way to the top as if trickle down economic theory was formulated on opposite day. A better way to convey the phenomenon to gearheads, however, comes from a Bloomberg report.

That’s because the flow of money can be seen in the way the rich spend theirs: on exotic cars. In case you haven’t been keeping up, let us remind you how automakers like Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce can’t seem to stop customers from infiltrating their dealerships. The hard hitting statistic can be found in how growth in the auto industry has been distributed. In the past five years, the global auto market has blossomed by 23 percent. Impressive, but that doesn’t come anywhere near the growth experienced by automakers selling cars costing $200,000 or more. That segment has exploded by 51 percent during the same time frame.

It’s not like we have to look hard to see how exotic automakers are celebrating. Expecting more growth to quell the demand, Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Lamborghini are going where they’ve never gone before, debuting SUVs and expanding production caps to ride the wave of growth as best as they can. It’s arguable that the explosion in this segment has been what’s led McLaren to become the mighty supercar manufacturer it is today, having had a firm place in the ranks of the rookies just a few years back. Correlation might not mean causation, but any detective looking to find why luxury and supercar sales have surged doesn't have to search hard.

They would likely see the 21 percent growth of “ultra high net worth individuals” (those with over $30 million in assets) since 2012 as one reason for the boom. Expect that number, as well as sales of ultra-premium luxury cars and exotics, to increase before they taper off or until social revolution takes place.

Is BMW Working On A New Hybrid Halo Supercar?

BMW's R&D Chief is working hard to make it happen.

BMW still hasn’t built a proper supercar since the M1, but that could change within the next few years. Enthusiasts are begging BMW to build a new supercar that serves as the brand’s halo car, and the German automaker's R&D chief Klaus Frohlich is doing everything in his power to make it happen. Speaking to Drive, the executive hinted that a new BMW supercar could happen as early as 2021 but didn’t confirm if the project has been given the green light.

However, his comments suggest BMW could be working on a new flagship supercar. “A supercar is my personal wish…I think there is a next window of opportunity whenever we have the life cycle for i8,” he told the publication at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. “I’m working very hard to make it happen.”

What isn’t clear is if Frohlich sees the supercar as a potential successor to the i8 or a separate car. He did, however, say he would like to use the i8’s aluminum and carbon fiber platform as a starting point. “The chassis is so robust, so good and so lightweight that I would like to use it for a second generation,” he said. Like the i8, Frohlich envisions the supercar to have a combustion engine linked with electric motors.

With 389 hp on tap, the BMW i8 isn’t in the same league as supercars like the Lamborghini Huracan and Audi R8, but Frohlich suggested his proposed supercar will offer significantly more performance. While large V8 or V10 engines have been ruled out, he thinks a four- or six-cylinder unit will likely power the rear wheels. Electric motors would then drive the front wheels to make the car all-wheel drive.

With this setup, Frohlich believes 600 hp is a good target to aim for and that the car would weigh less than two tonnes. Alas, development of Frohlich’s passion project hasn’t been confirmed yet, so we probably shouldn’t get too excited just yet. Still, at least BMW isn’t ruling out the possibility of developing a new halo car. It all depends if a business case can be made, as he admitted the market is small but it could bolster the brand’s image.

It's Time We Stopped Asking BMW For A New M1 Supercar

Not only because BMW is probably tired of being asked.

For years there’ve been rumors flying around regarding the prospects of BMW doing a reborn M1 supercar. The automaker got everyone talking, more seriously this time, when it launched its M1 Concept in 2008. In the end, it turned out to be nothing more than a 30th anniversary tribute to the original and iconic M1 sports car, but that homage concept definitely got people talking. Today, nearly a decade later, talk is still going on regarding an M1 revival, and it really ought to stop. For good.

BMW has no intention or need to build one, as CarAdvice more or less just confirmed. BMW M boss, Frank Van Meel, stated at Frankfurt that BMW is “trying to make cars for customers, and trying to reach as many customers as possible – but to build a car for 200 people would not be our main target.” Why 200? Because he’s basing it on the 250 planned Project Ones Mercedes-AMG will build. Van Meel further made clear that BMW M is fully capable of building a new M1 that could conceivable face off against the likes of the Audi R8 and Mercedes-AMG GT S. Van Meel and his team could even go further and do an outright Project One fighter, though that’d be more difficult because BMW doesn’t take part in F1.

“If you look at the tradition of M, we came from being the first company to take a series of production car and making a high-performance car out of that, and it was copied by a lot of other companies, also AMG,” Van Meel said. More importantly is that Van Meel feels he and BMW have nothing to prove with a supercar. “I also think M is the ultimate driving machine, and I don’t need something to make clear that we really are the ultimate driving machine. We have the M2 to the X6 M to say that – I don’t need a halo car to bring out the message. I don’t feel the need to have a halo car.” Perhaps the closest thing we’ll ever get to a reborn M1 is the upcoming M8, which Van Meel described as “a very, very interesting car, very fast.”

Despite everything, Van Meel did express enthusiasm at the possibility of doing a new M1, but it’s simply not on the list of priorities. It may never have to be, and Van Meel, of all people, fully understands why.

2019 Audi R8 First Drive Review: More Power, Sharper Suit For Audi's Supercar

Enjoy the Lamborghini V10 while you still can.

There’s no other sports or supercar quite like the Audi R8 – it’s a paradoxical mix of high-tech infotainment and old school V10 engine; of Lamborghini genes and sensible-shoes usability; of searing performance at – in this rarefied segment – a relatively affordable price point. Now Audi has re-booted its mid-engined halo for 2019, admitting all variants to the 200-mph club in the process.

A relatively light tweak it might be, but with Audi rumored to axe the R8 after this second generation or re-imagine it as an all-electric or plug-in hybrid, this is our last chance to enjoy ten cylinders screaming to an incendiary 8,250 rpm.

As before, Coupe or Spyder models are available, both with all-wheel drive, an S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox and that scintillating V10 in two states of tune. When we ask if the cheaper rear-wheel-drive RWS might return, Audi Sport engineers look around nervously and don’t say no. Fingers crossed for that. For now, we’re driving the top-spec coupe: the V10 Performance. With the car still awaiting homologation, we’ve come to the Ascari racetrack in Spain for our drive.

Exterior Design: First Impressions

The changes to the R8 are relatively subtle, but even parked a distance away in the Ascari pit lane it looks different, especially the front: lower and wider, kind of like it’s wearing a mouthguard, but the new jaw is effective in creating a more purposeful look. Look closer and there’s a flatter front grille, three little slits at the leading edge of the hood that recall the Ur Quattro, and a new, wider front splitter.

Changes at the rear are less obvious, with the design team having to draw our attention to the more upswept rear diffuser.

Interior Design And Features

There are two new colors (Kemora Grey, Ascari Blue), new 19-inch alloys (20s for the V10 Performance) and some gloss-black detailing on the standard model, replaced by matte titanium on the Performance.

The interior is unchanged, but plus points include a great driving position, solid build with flashes of flair, and Audi’s virtual cockpit for a slick, modern feel. Important to remember that the Spyder, like before, has a tighter cockpit due to the roof mechanism – if you’re taller than six-feet, you’ll struggle for legroom.

Engine And Performance: Turning The V10 Up To 11

Both versions of the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 get extra power. The standard model now produces 533 hp at 8,250 rpm, an increase of 30 hp, and 406 lb-ft at a high 6,500 rpm, up 7 lb-ft. All of it is purely down to software calibration changes, and helps even the heavier Spyder to score 200 mph.

The Performance we’re driving now produces 612 hp and 428 lb-ft, which is 10 hp / 15 lb-ft stronger than before, and now a little beyond the Lamborghini Huracan too, if not the range-topping Huracan Performante.

These gains come from a valvetrain revised with titanium components as well as fresh ECU mapping. It means the V10 Performance coupe can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.1 seconds and reach 206 mph – one-tenth and 1 mph up on previously.

Revised Chassis

Audi engineers have played around with the chassis, though the basic spring rates and damper specs remain unchanged – there are apparently greater steps between the driving modes, but as we’re driving on track in the Dynamic ‘dry’ setting, we’ll have to wait for another test drive to spot those nuances.

All our test cars are fitted with a new optional anti-roll bar made from carbon fiber and aluminum. It’s laid out next to the standard item in the pit garages and the difference is striking – you could work out with the old one, where the new, 4.5-lb lighter roll bar wouldn’t so much as raise your heartbeat.

The choice of standard or Dynamic steering continues, both updated with calibration changes and available for us to sample. It’s also worth noting that all test cars are fitted with Michelin Cup 2 tires, optional track-focused rubber that you’ll find on a 911 GT3 and Ferrari 488 Pista. No-one at Audi seems to know which markets will be offered these tires.

At The Wheel

Ascari is a fast track, its fear factor multiplied by walls for run-off, blind, heartbeat entries to some corners, and other turns that seem to roll on forever in third and fourth gear, goading you to accelerate earlier than you really should.

Flatten the accelerator in first and the all-wheel drive claws at the pit exit’s dry surface, the V10 rips round past 8,000 rpm while the digital rev counter strobes red in the corner of your eye, and the first to second gear shift thwacks in, full of mechanical menace.

The bare figures tell you performance has moved on with the likes of the McLaren 720S, but this remains visceral acceleration that requires some acclimatisation, even if the small power hike is not particularly obvious.

Standard carbon-ceramic brakes fitted to the Performance (optional for lesser V10s) wipe off speed into the first tight, downhill left-hander – no ABS intervention, big stopping power, maybe a little bagginess at the top of the pedal – and as you aim for the apex, you get a first glimpse of the R8’s sweet balance off-throttle. It turns keenly and with modest, well-supported roll, partly a benefit of the mid-engined layout. But the downhill braking zone exaggerates the weight of the V10 in the back, which starts to swing round – it’s a balance that makes the R8 feel even more nimble and reactive, but it’s definitely a pendulum effect that must be anticipated and nursed.

The stability control’s unintrusive Sport setting and all-wheel drive helps, and under full power as the corner opens and quickens, the nose hooks up and pulls the car out. It switches the balance to a neutral, slightly understeery feeling, and you have to moderate the combination of front-end push and fast-escalating speed. The previous rear-wheel-drive R8 had a more fluid, less manic feeling, but it’s certainly sure-footed. Remember the standard tires will feel less precise on track.

At higher speeds and gears you get more time to appreciate the V10 –the crispness of its response, the linearity of the delivery, but more than anything it’s the bandwidth in the final 1,000 rpm of the rev range and a scream like a distressed chicken that makes the R8 so enjoyable.

The trade is that it feels less enthusiastic at lower revs than a turbo rival and you quickly bog down if you’re a gear too high, but super-quick gear shifts keep you in the power band, even if they do lose the mechanical edge of brutal low-speed acceleration at heartbeat speed.

After a few laps, it’s time to switch into a car with the Dynamic steering, complete with chassis engineer in the passenger seat. He’s candid that he prefers the standard system, but the Dynamic set-up works well, particularly through quick direction changes. There is, however, a less natural sense of support through the long, fast corners, where the slower, heavier feel of the regular steering is preferable. There’s no huge mistake to be made here, but we’d stick with the standard set-up.

Verdict, Prices And Trims

Despite a very mild makeover, the Audi R8 remains a compelling choice, one that’s unfairly overlooked. A McLaren 570S is a lighter, more nimble and more tactile feeling car, but the R8 is cheaper than its British rival and by far the more useable everyday proposition –better refinement, better technology, easier to actually climb into, and offering the security of all-wheel drive and a mainstream dealer network too. And it’s still a relatively safe and invigorating way to explore a racetrack.

More than anything though, the R8 gets our hearts racing because it combines all this level-headedness with a hand built naturally-aspirated Lamborghini V10 that sears and yelps and makes the 570S seem gruff and characterless in comparison. Don’t miss the chance to appreciate it while you still can.

Prices and on-sale dates are TBC, but expect the $165,000 entry model to increase to around $170,000 and the top-spec $194,000 V10 coupe to hit $200,000.

Modified BMW X5 M Offers Supercar Levels Of Performance

It’s even more powerful than the mighty Lamborghini Urus.

Now that the all-new 2019 BMW X5 has broken cover, it’s only a matter of time before the full-fat M version arrives. Unfortunately, we’re going to be waiting a while, because the new 600-hp BMW X5 M isn’t expected to be unveiled until next year. To ease the wait, Polish aftermarket specialist Auto-Dynamics has given the old F85 X5 M a new lease of life with an ambitious tuning job that gives the SUV supercar levels of performance. Under the hood, the X5 M’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 has been upgraded to deliver a substantial 670 hp and 649 lb-ft of torque, up from 567 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque in the stock X5 M. It’s even more powerful than the mighty Lamborghini Urus, which produces 650 hp.

To achieve this huge power bump, Auto-Dynamics has remapped the ECU, fitted an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system, and upgraded the air filters along with other minor tweaks. With these modifications, the X5 M will hit 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds – not bad for an SUV that weighs 5,260 pounds. This makes it seven-tenths of a second quicker than the stock model off the line. No top speed has been specified, but it’s probably safe to assume it surpasses the standard X5 M’s electronically limited 155 mph top speed.

As well as upgrading the V8, Auto-Dynamics has replaced the X5 M’s standard wheels with a larger 22-inch set and finished the exterior in satin black. Practically every part of the body has been painted in black apart from the blue calipers, giving the SUV a more sinister look. Carbon fiber accents and lowered the suspension round off the transformation.
