From artist X-Tomi, this first render shows how a BMW 8 Series shooting brake would look from the side profile. Its wide stance and sloping roofline applies well to the shooting brake body style, although the rear appears to have been inspired by the 1 Series. While X-Tomi’s render only shows the profile, artist Rain Prisk Design has produced a separate design showing how the sporty shooting brake would look from the back. The result is probably going to be polarizing. In fact, it looks a lot like a Volvo with its taillights stretching up to the roof.

In this case, they seem to stretch all the way from one side to the other, though. It also sits much closer to the ground than the standard model. This makes it perfectly equipped for chasing criminals in high-speed police pursuits, so it’s a shame it won’t be used as a real police car.

What Would You Do With a Wrecked BMW M1?

Mostly everyone who knows anything about cars is familiar in some degree with the BMW M1. The wedge-shaped supercar is a pure ‘80s dream and remains capable of dilating pupils wherever it goes. But with only 453 examples built during its brief production run you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than seeing one on a milk run.

So rare are these German jewels that even completely wrecked examples are capable of pulling in six figures when they come up for sale, like this Bring a Trailer success story. In 1985 the front of this M1 was ripped off and it was left to sit in storage for more than 30 years. It showed up on BaT and was purchased by a wealthy collector in the hopes of someday doing something with the wreck.

Less than a year later he found another wrecked M1, this one’s rear end was all melted from fire. Instead of doing unspeakable things to the pair of write offs in order create a running example, the two M1s were turned into a piece of wall art instead.

The all-new BMW 3 Series, codenamed G20, is only days away from its official global debut at the Paris Motor Show. But whenever there’s an all-new 3 Series, talk naturally switches gear to the next M3 high-performance sedan. Given that we haven’t yet seen the new 3 Series, aside from spy photos and teasers, it’s a little hard to figure out what the new M3 itself will look like. Hard, but not impossible.

Thanks to graphic designer Aksyonov Nikita, via Behance, these rendered images offer one of the best previews yet of what the G20 M3 could look like.

Clearly, Nikita started off his G20 M3 preview with the outgoing F80 M3 CS. The new car’s overall dimensions are said to be similar, though we do expect it to grow in size at least somewhat. Naturally, it will sport BMW’s latest styling language as shown on, for example, the 5 Series and M5. This render shows new headlights, a redesigned lower front fascia, as well as new taillights and exhausts.

One specific area the rendering artist didn’t alter, though he probably should have somehow, is the trademark twin-kidney grille. The grille shown here is the same design from today’s 3 Series/M3. We know this will change on the G20 generation.

However, the new taillight design could be pretty close to the real deal, based on what we’ve seen from spy shots as well as the latest 5 Series. Interestingly, the artist opted for dual exhausts instead of the quad units typically found on M cars. We think it happens to look good, but we fully expect to see the next M3 stick with quad pipes.

Under the hood, chances are BMW has upgraded the current car’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, though it’s possible it’ll be connected to a 48-volt electric system. Total output will increase to around 500 hp, a nice improvement over the current 453 hp CS. Based on the previous launch timelines, don’t expect the G20 M3 to debut until a year or so following the regular 3 Series.

It Will Never Happen, But Here's What A BMW X2 M Would Look Like

We love looking at sportier versions of cars that may never exist.

BMW has just revealed its latest crossover, the X2. Aimed at millennial buyers, at least according to BMW's press release, BMW wanted to give the X2 a youthful vibe with a bit of the company's signature sporty characteristics. We're usually pretty harsh when it comes to these small crossovers that may as well be hatchbacks, but even we have to admit that BMW kind of nailed it with the styling. The company roundel on the D pillar is one of the coolest styling elements we've seen recently on any BMW model.

The X2 will be a decent crossover, but it's clearly not meant to be the sportiest model in the BMW range. However, it does compete with the Mercedes GLA, which has an AMG version with 385 horsepower. So, what if BMW made an X2 M to rival the GLA 45? Rendering artist, X-Tomi Design, wondered the same thing, and this is what he came up with. The rendering does remind us a bit of the current M2. However, since the X2 shares very little with the 2 Series, we doubt that an X2 M could use the M2's 3.0-liter inline-six engine. We know that BMW wants to build an X3 M, but we doubt that an X2 M would ever be on the table.

BMW is rumored to be working on a new version of the B48, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine found in several smaller BMW models. This new version of the B48 could produce around 300 hp in an X2 M35i. If BMW were to build an X2 M, it would have to pack at least 350 hp to be competitive with Mercedes. It may be unlikely, but we can dream can't we?

5 BMW Models We Would Love To See On The Road

We think that all of these would restore BMW's former glory.

A little over a year ago, we suggested that BMW should bring back the 8 Series as a flagship model. A year and a half later, BMW has responded with the stunning 8 Series Concept. We wish that BMW would make more daring chances like this, instead of building cars that enthusiasts hate like the 6 Series GT. We think that BMW has the potential to build some of the finest driving machines in the world. If only it could forget about crossovers for a while.

When we envisioned a flagship model for BMW, we pictured a mid-engined replacement for the old M1. We love the way that the M8 looks and we think that it will be a great model for the brand. However, we still think that the BMW lineup has room for a supercar to sit above the M8 and i8. The i8 was very futuristic, but the excitement fizzled out on the car after most people purchased it above sticker price with the intent to flip it. We would love to see a mid-engine car with a tuned version of the M8's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Adding a hybrid drivetrain to the car could even make it a fierce competitor for upcoming hypercars like the Mercedes Project 1.

We know that BMW is working with Toyota on a convertible model that will replace the Z4. The car will share a platform with the new Supra, but we know very little about it, including its name. We all thought that it would be called the Z5, but BMW put that rumor to rest. Whatever this new car will be called, we know that it will be a two-seater convertible. We've recently seen a rendering of what a modern day Z3 M Coupe could look like, and it makes us desperately wish that BMW would build a coupe version of the new car. This modern day clown shoe would be a very niche car, but would be a great way to reward loyal enthusiasts who have helped old M cars become so collectible.

It sounds supprising, but BMW has never built an M3 wagon from the factory. There have been wagon versions of the M5, but never the M3. Even though rivals Audi and Mercedes have made wagon version of the RS4 and C63, the closest that BMW has ever come to an M3 wagon was a prototype based on the E46 chassis. We seriously doubt that the current M3 will spawn a wagon variant, so we can only hope that the next generation will be the first one. At this point, we would even settle for an M4 Grand Coupe, which offers similar practicality to a wagon. We can't believe that BMW has still never offered this body style on an M3, but we doubt that the US would even get it if BMW did decide to build it.

We all love the E30 BMW M3, but the prices on this classic car have gotten completely out of hand. The E30 is a great car, but it's not worth six-figures. That is why we propose that BMW build new E30 M3 models as part of a limited classic run. A new law was approved in the US that allows low-volume manufacturers to build recreation cars. This is the law that allows DeLorean to sell brand new models. DeLorean is using the original tooling to create new cars, and we think that BMW should set up a BMW Classic division to do the same thing. These cars would be very expensive to build, but it could free up the older M cars for people who actually want to drive them.

The 2 Series is easily our favorite model in the BMW range. The car's smaller size reminds us of models like the E46 M3. The bigger M cars have been overwhelmed by power and technology, but BMW kept the M2 nice and simple. We would love to see an even more focused version of the 2 Series come out with a naturally aspirated engine. We know that BMW is working on a more hardcore version of the M2, possibly called the CS, but we would love to see a more simplified 2 Series with a naturally aspirated engine that just sings. BMW has gone to turbocharging in every model, but we would love to see one purist car in the range that was just meant to be a driver's car.
