This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 84 03 01 dated February 2001.

SUBJECT

Navigation "Wide" Screen On-board Monitor Opens of its Own Accord

MODEL

E38, E39 with Nav produced from 09/2000 to 12/2000

SITUATION

After opening the doors or starting the vehicle, the screen of the on-board monitor opens and closes of by itself without pressing the eject button.

This action repeats itself several times over a period of approximately 5 minutes following start-up. After that time, the on-board monitor works

correctly.

CAUSE

A faulty housing of the on-board monitor assembly.

The incorrect location of the end-position microswitch of the on-board monitor control panel, causes erroneous determination of exact end position.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis only, replace the "wide screen" board monitor housing assembly.

The improved part (P/N 65 52 8 385 454) can be identified by the production date on the part label later then week 46/00.

PROCEDURE

The "wide" screen on-board monitor consists of two separate units: housing assembly with cassette drive, and screen with its control panel. In order

to replace the board monitor housing unit:

467

the circuit board in order to release the connector).

5. Manually rotate the screen to the fully open position.

6. Remove four Philips screws located on the sides of the screen, securing screen to the rotating arms.

Steering Gear - Replacement Due to Accident Damage

This Service Information bulletins replaces S.I. 32 04 84 dated September 1984. Please remove S.I. 32 04 84 from your binder and discard.

SUBJECT

Replacement of Steering Gear Due to Accident Damage

MODEL

All

SITUATION

Impacts due to accidents or similar driving conditions can cause damage to steering boxes or racks. It may be extremely difficult to diagnose internal

damage to steering boxes or racks which otherwise appear undamaged externally.

A thorough internal check of steering gears is generally not economically feasible. However, damage to other related components can be taken into

consideration when deciding whether a steering gear must be replaced.

PROCEDURE

The steering gear does NOT have to be replaced if:

There is no visible damage to front axle parts such as spring struts, hubs or spindles, control arms or wish bones, thrust or tension rods or stabilizers

performing a locating function, steering drop arms or Pitman arms, track rods or drag links, tie rods, front axle subframe, steering column, and

attachment points for suspension components to body.

-- There is no binding or increase in turning effort when operating the steering gear from lock to lock with engine off.

-- The impact has not caused the wheel alignment to become not adjustable within specified tolerances using normal adjustment procedures.

The steering gear MUST be replaced if:

-- There is visible damage to the steering gear, including blackening or discoloration of the housing from fire damage.

-- There is any permanent deformation or cracks on:

Steering gear mounts;

Front axle subframe;

Steering drop arms or Pitman arms

Spring struts;

Spindles or hubs;

Steering column;

Control arms or wishbones (except damage caused by improper towing or tie-downs);

Thrust or tension rods or stabilizers performing a locating function (except damage caused by improper towing or tie-downs);

Track rods or drag links and tie rods (except damage caused by improper towing or tie-downs)

151

If a recommended replacement under the criteria described above is refused by the customer or insurance company, the repair order should be so

noted and signed by the refusing party.

Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign No. 01E-A02

MODEL

E46 - 323i, 323Ci, 323iT, 323iC, 328i, 328Ci with M52TU engines

E39 - 528i, 528iT with M52TU engines E36 - Z3 2.5, Z3 2.8, Z3 coupe with M52TU engines

SITUATION

BMW has determined that certain 1999 and 2000 model year BMW automobiles with M52TU engines incorporate a coolant thermostat which may

fail prematurely.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to check and replace (if necessary) the engine coolant

thermostat on all affected vehicles.

A copy of the customer letter is included.

CAUSE

The thermostat element retaining lugs may break, which would cause the coolant temperature gauge to fluctuate (in and out of the red zone), low

heater output into the passenger compartment, and the Check Engine lamp to illuminate with the following fault codes set in the Engine Control

Module (ECM/DME):

-- Fault Code 168 (A8 hex) - thermostat for characteristic map cooling and/or

-- Fault Code 222 (DE hex) - coolant temperature plausibility

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall involves E46 3 series, E39 5 series and E36 Z3 vehicles with M52TU engines which were produced from 6/1/98 - 3/31/00.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer

Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

157

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Check and replace (if necessary) the engine coolant thermostat on all affected vehicles.

PROCEDURE

Thermostat checking procedure:

Check the thermostat manufacturer name located on the thermostat housing as shown.

Note:

The thermostat does not have to be removed from the engine to preform this check.

158

If a Behr thermostat is found as shown, it must be replaced as outlined in the appropriate repair manual group 11, section 11 53 000.

Note:

Drain coolant into a clean drain pan for reuse after the thermostat has been replaced.

PARTS INFORMATION

The coolant thermostat and gasket ring may be ordered through all ordering methods. These parts are not restricted, however supply is limited,

therefore limit ordering to actual quantities required.

The parts shown may not be returned via the center return system, obsolescence or manual AFA.

RECALL LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

After the vehicle has been corrected, obtain a label (SD92-177) and with a ball point pen print your BMW center code (5 digits) on the Recall

Completion Label (see illustration). An initial quantity of 100 labels will be sent to all BMW automotive centers. Peel the label from its backing and

affix it to the left front strut tower (in the engine compartment) next to the Vehicle Emission Control Label.

159

For California centers only it is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emissions Recall - Proof of

Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall

on their vehicle has been completed.

Note:

Additional labels can be ordered from Product Engineering.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Reimbursement for this Recall will be provided through campaign entry.
