Identity Transfer Kit for CMT 5000VR and CPT 6000VR Phones

MODEL:

E39, E38

220

Situation:

The new Identity Transfer kit (P/N 99 00 0 000 817) allows transferring the NAM (Number Assignment Module) programming and repertory

memory information (names and phone numbers) from a transceiver diagnosed as defective into a replacement transceiver for CMT 5000VR, CPT

6000VR phones.

Utilizing the equipment eliminates the need for the technician and/or customer to reprogram such information manually in the event of a transceiver

replacement.

Important:

Unfortunately, the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) of the transceiver cannot be transferred during the procedure, due to FCC regulations on

newer generation equipment. The local cellular carrier has to be contacted to transfer the new ESN number. Also, the customer has to reprogram

the voice tags into the memory of the phone.

Distribution of the following tools will be through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional tools may be purchased through your PDC.

Please refer to Pants Information bulletin I-24 dated 4/95 for tool warranty details. All prices in this bulletin are introductory prices. Introductory

prices are only valid during the Automatic Tool Shipment.

SUBJECT:

E46 Phone Prewire Harness Installation (P/N 82 11 1 470 445)

MODEL:

E46

Situation:

A phone prewire extension harness(center console to left side trunk, illustration 1) must be installed on the E46 (328i, 328iA) produced the first two

weeks of 6/98 if the phone kit is being installed.

Cause:

The phone prewire option SA640 was not installed on vehicles produced during the first two weeks of 6/98. E46's produced after the second week of

6/98 will have this phone prewire option SA640 installed at the factory.

Vehicles Affected:

E46 (328/4 door) produced 6/98

Chassis Number Range

FROOOOO - FR00172

KGO5OOO-KG05166

Correction:

If a customer purchases a BMW phone, the wire harness (p/n 82 11 1 470 445) must be installed into the vehicle. The phone will not function if this

harness is not installed on vehicles that are missing the pre-wire harness.

220

Illustration 1: Missing Phone Prewire (1)

Procedure:

To install the phone harness from the center console to the left side of the trunk:

1. Remove the shifter indicator cover(automatic) or boot(manual) and remove the front fasteners(1).

2. Remove the rear ashtray to access the two rear fasteners (2). Lift the parking brake boot and raise the brake handle.

3. Remove the center console (automatic shown).

4. With the center console removed, the existing phone "prewire" connector is accessible (1).

221

5. Remove the rear seat bottom and left side bolster to access the grommet(arrow). The phone harness will enter the trunk through this grommet.

6. Remove the left side sill trim (1). The sill trim Is fastened by two clips(as Illustrated). Pull up carefully to remove.

7. Inside the trunk, remove the left bulb holder(1), the lower tray(2), and carefully pull the left side trunk liner(3) towards the center of the trunk

8. Remove and modify the grommet by drilling a 125mm(1IZ') hole at location A.

9. Cut through the grommet from hole A to the outer edge(B). This is the new hole that the phone hamess will run through.

10. Prepare the new harness(2) for installation by attaching a "snake"(1) as illustrated. The snake can be fabricated using a coat hanger or similar

material.

222

11. Wrap the end of the snake around the harness(arrow), below the "Y"(where the harness branches). Do not secure the snake directly to the

connectors!

12. Wrap the snake and harness(1) in electrical tape to secure the connectors and prevent damage.

13. Lifting the center rear edge of the carpet(2), route the snake under the carpet, along the top, right side of the transmission tunnel.

14. When the snake is visible in the area next to the parking brake, pull the snake/harness(1) through, allowing a sufficient length of harness to

remove the tape and snake.

15. The harness should be exposed approximately 28cm.(11 inches) (A).

16. Fasten the connector(2) on the extension harness side to the existing connector(1).

17. Connector (3) will be attached to the phone Interface Box (supplied in the phone kit).

223

18. Route the harness under the carpet, over the transmission tunnel(1), across the rear of the left side footwell, through the plastic harness

guide(2), and into the trunk(3).

19. From inside the trunk, pull the harness through the hole and route it to the left rear of the trunk. The left trunk liner may have to be pulled

toward the center of the trunk allow

20. When the hamess(2) is positioned correctly, reinstall the modified grommet(1) and seat bolster.

21. Follow the installation instructions(supplied with the phone kit) to complete the phone installation.
