INFORMATION

Information and test plans in ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) are provided to assist the technician in troubleshooting. Diagnostic

test plans are available for electrical and electromechanical vehicle systems, as well as selected mechanical systems (NED; Non-electric Diagnosis).

Some electrical components and electromechanical systems do not require test plans to be performed for reimbursement via warranty.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide:

^ Information on when diagnostic test plans are required/not required.

^ A recommended procedure on how to utilize the diagnostic information and test plans in ISTA.

Your knowledge and understanding of this information will result in efficient diagnostic procedures and warranty claim processing.

Within ISTA (D2.26 or later) detailed information can be found on:

^ Mechanical systems requiring diagnosis (NED): ISTA document "Contents Non-electric Diagnosis (NED)".

^ Electrical or electromechanical systems require no diagnosis: ISTA document "Contents Diagnosis", chapter "Component Repair without

Diagnosis." Some items are:

^ Faulty bulbs (except xenon and LED)

^ Items with visual defects

^ Electrical components with broken retaining elements

^ Items damaged by water ingress or thermal event (excluding control units)

^ Mechanical engine components with leaks or mechanical damage

^ Display devices with visual or mechanical defects

^ Inoperative horns, cigarette lighters or power sockets

These documents can always be called up in ISTA via "News", and are updated with each ISTA version.

These documents are automatically displayed on the ISTA home screen when ISTA is first opened.

Utilize ISTA whenever:

a. A fault is stored, but the fault cause is not clearly identifiable.

b. A fault causes an indicator warning lamp to illuminate.

c. A fault lies within a mechanical system, and the fault cause cannot be clearly identified.

d. A fault lies within a mechanical system, and the repair is too costly. For example replacing the entire panoramic sunroof as opposed to installing

a repair kit.

e. TeileClearing is active for the component requiring replacement.

Engine - High Pressure Steam Cleaning Warning

Group 12

Bulletin Number

12 03 89 (1838)

Woodcliff Lake, NJ

March 1989

Technical Dept.

SUBJECT:

High Pressure Engine Steam Cleaning

MODELS:

All

Situation:

High pressure engine steam cleaning can force cleaning solutions into the engine harness sheath and associated cables, causing unusual problems

which otherwise would not have occurred

The high quality BMW engine harness multiplugs and related sealing measures were never intended to be subjected to the discharge velocity and

force of typical commercial steam cleaning units. Further, cleaning solutions used in conjunction with the high pressure discharge can leave

corrosive, if not conductive, residues deep within the harness and cables.

BMW engines are rarely so encrusted with automotive residues and dirt that normal low pressure degreasing methods fail to provide proper, efficient

cleaning.

Clearly, high pressure engine steam cleaning is unnecessary and should be restricted to extreme cleaning jobs, i.e., commercial trucks, off road

vehicles, et

CONSEQUENTLY HIGH PRESSURE ENGINE STEAM CLEANING IS EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED FOR BMW ENGINES.

Typical BMW engine washing procedure:

1. Bring engine to operating temperature, switch engine off.

2. Cover or shield any component (AFM, ignition distributor, multiplugs etc.) situated in the area to be cleaned with plastic sheeting. Pieces of a

"BMW Clean Kit" seat cover or the equivalent will provide adequate protection.

137

3. Apply engine degreaser or general engine cleaning solvent and allow to soak for up to five minutes (follow manufacturer's instructions).

4. Warm water spray the area to be cleaned, flushing the solvent and the contaminants loose.

Note:

- Do not aim the water spray directly at components.

- Do not use the waterspray any longer than necessary.

- Do not wash the entire engine compartment when only one area requires degreasing, e.g., front crankshaft radial seal, M20 oil filter

replacement, etc.

5. Blow dry the cleaned area immediately with a moderate compressed air jet.

6. Start engine immediately and preferably road test vehicle.

Information:

Warranty claims for corroded connections and contaminated multiplugs which a caused by improper engine cleaning will no longer be honored.

Labor Operation Information:

The general engine cleaning procedure stated herein is a simple, common sense guideline. The labor allowance for cleaning is always included in

any labor allowance for fluid leakage repair.

When special cleaning is requested, additional time and a definite labor operation will be provided for that specific repair.

Vehicles produced from 2/28/2007 to 5/30/2011

SITUATION

The vehicle electrical system fails completely and one or more of the following faults may occur:

^ The vehicle fails to start.

^ The central locking system fails to operate with the remote key.

^ The key cannot be inserted into the key slot.

^ Communication to the vehicle is not possible using ISTA (Integrated Technical Service Application).

2010 BMW 328xi Coupe AWD (E92) L6-3.0L (N52K) Page 151

CAUSE

Over time, the positive battery cable connection at the front power distribution box loses connection.

PROCEDURE

The situation described in this Service Information can also be attributed to a discharged battery. Before proceeding with this procedure, check that

the battery is in operating condition by using the BMW battery tester.

1. Remove the front fuse box as per ISTA Repair Instructions REP 61 13 050, Removing and installing or replacing fuse box in passenger

compartment (built afier 3/2007).

2. Check for discoloration of the positive battery cable insulation where the cable connects to the fuse box. Refer to the attachment to this Service

Information bulletin, which shows the affected area.

3. If discoloration is noted in the affected area, replace both the fuse box and the cable. The cable routes from the battery fuse box in the luggage

compartment to the front fuse box along the main wiring harness, under the carpet on the right side of the vehicle interior. There are currently no

repair instructions to replace this cable. Refer to ISTA Repair Instructions REP 51 47 315 and 51 47 440 for removing all the carpets in order to gain

access to the harness. Route the new cable in the exact same way as the original cable. Refer to attachment.

REP 51 47 315 and 51 47 440 are for reference only, the full scope of these repair procedures do not apply (removing all seats and the center

console as applicable) to the repair procedure outlined in this Service Information bulletin.

Note:

The replacement cables listed in this Service Information have been improved to prevent this fault from occurring in the future.

Please take particular care in removing and installing the replacement B+ battery cable that is contained in the main harness to avoid damaging other

wiring.

4. If no discoloration is found on the cable insulation, proceed with standard troubleshooting to identify the voltage drop in the battery cable circuit.
