Turns Out People Do Want To Buy Hybrids And Electric Cars

They just don't want to pay so much to buy them.

Automotive research site iSeeCars has published an interesting study looking at the fastest-selling late-model used cars in America after analyzing over four million one- to three-year old used cars sold from January through July 2018. The biggest surprise is that not a single SUV, crossover, or pickup truck made the list.

Topping the list is the Toyota Prius C, which only stays on the used car market for an average of 29.6 days. In second place is the Tesla Model S, spending an average of 32.4 days on used car dealer lots. Since it’s in high demand, buying a new Model S means waiting at least a month for delivery, but buying a used model cuts out the wait time.

The BMW i3 plug-in hybrid ranks third at 33.4 days, which iSeeCars attributes to its affordable price. A used late-model i3 usually sells for $23,964 on average compared to a new model that costs an average of $53,503. Rounding off the top five fastest-selling used cars is the Toyota Prius (33.4 days) and Chevrolet Volt (34.3 days). You may have noticed a trend here – all five of the best-selling used cars are either hybrid or fully electric, despite the strong demand for new SUVs and trucks and slow sales of electrified models on the new car market. It suggests consumers are interested in hybrid and electric cars but can’t afford to buy a new one.

“When buying a new car, hybrids on average are 20 percent more expensive than conventional gasoline-fuel cars, so buying them used is an effective way to offset that added cost,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “The performance of hybrid and electric cars, especially the Prius, has helped consumers abandon their initial concerns about battery life, and this perception change has contributed to the rising popularity of these vehicles.”

According to iSeeCars, the average late model used vehicle takes 46.4 days to sell, but some take a lot longer. The slowest-selling late-model used car is the Porsche Cayenne, which typically stays on the market for 67.8 days before being sold.

People Are Already Trying To Order The Porsche Taycan

Early bird gets the worm.

Aside from having a new name, we really don't have any details regarding the Porsche Taycan. We have seen the car in concept form, as both the Mission E and Mission E Cross Turimso, but Porsche has not revealed a production version as of yet. However according to Autocar, customers have already started to place their orders before seeing a production version of the car. It seems people are eager to get their hands of Porsche's first all-electric model.

UK managing director Alexander Pollich confirmed that orders for the Taycan have already been taken, but declined to to confirm exactly how many have been placed. “The reaction from customers has been fantastic - from the moment we announced the car to now, when we have asked customers to register their interest for the first cars. The history of Porsche began with an electric car in 1898 and that provides some inspiration and motivation for us. Of course there was a big gap, but we have led with the introduction of hybrids and now we will use our heritage and learnings to offer a class-leading electric car." he said.

It doesn't surprise us that people are eager to own one of the most hotly anticipated electric cars since the Tesla Model 3. Pollich explained that "the next 18 months will be fascinating, as we develop and reveal the car, but what is already clear is that customers are keen. They are talking to our dealers asking how to get to the top of the priority lists and asking to access more information.” Hopefully Porsche can avoid the preorder fiasco that Tesla suffered when it could not meet initial Model 3 demand.

This Bentley Bentayga Mulliner Was Made For People Who Love Horses

They even have their own club in the UK, The Jockey Club.

It was no surprise when Bentley revealed the Bentayga Mulliner, and even less of a surprise to see one-off versions arrive. This particular Bentayga Mulliner is one of them. In celebration of its continuing partnership with The Jockey Club, the largest commercial group in British horseracing, Bentley will reveal this one-off commissioned Bentayga by Mulliner at the Cheltenham Festival later this month. Mulliner, quite obviously, styled the ultra-luxury SUV with traces of racing heritage and the equestrian lifestyle.

“The Cheltenham Festival is widely recognized as one of the finest horseracing events in the world, and The Festival’s unique sense of occasion is a perfect showcase for the world’s most exclusive SUV, the Bentayga,” said Uday Senapati, Mulliner’s head of technical operations. “The Mulliner team has been deeply inspired by the equestrian lifestyle, and this has encouraged us to use new materials and techniques for the first time on a Bentley in developing this one-off commission.” The SUV features a Spruce exterior, a modern take on British Racing Green. It’s been further equipped with Blackline Specification and 21-inch diamond-turned and black-painted wheels.

The interior is also bespoke, featuring Cubrian Green and Saddle leather hues. A light blue contrast stitching on the doors and seats helps to accentuate the tweed while Burr Walnut adorns the veneer panels. There’s also a gold horse graphic incorporated into the passenger veneer panel. Because this Bentayga Mulliner was commissioned by The Jockey Club, it’s obviously not for sale (at least not yet).
