DISCLAIMER

Situation

**The following Navigation System MK II (from 09/97 production) failures/malfunctions may be experienced by the customers:

1. The screen remains dark or shows only the status bar (at the bottom) after the vehicle was started.

After turning ignition on (KL 15), no display appears in the on-board monitor except for the status bar. The background lighting of the screen

is dark gray. Time display in the status bar is not being updated. Situation can be corrected by turning ignition OFF, waiting at least 1 minute,

and then turning it ON again.

2. The screen darkens during driving ("black" or "blank" screen) and the system reboots.

The on-board monitor intermittently blanks-out during driving when the Navigation System is operating. After a few seconds, the screen

reappears and the system reboots. Then, the main menu (if radio was previously turned off) or the audio/BC display shows on the screen. In

some cases the screen remains black, and reappears again only after turning ignition OFF, waiting at least 1 minute, and then turning it ON

again. In the "main menu" screen the "Navigation" feature can not be selected (Navigation button is not highlighted).

3. A route intermittently runs in a loop.

Intermittently, the map of the planned route appears on the on-board monitor as a loop, or the route guidance instruction runs in a loop (e.g. at

the intersection route guidance proposes a different direction then the one which was calculated initially, and after following this direction for

a while, either: instructs to make a "U-turn", or describes a route back to the original junction where the turn was executed).

4. Inaccuracies in the vehicle position indicator or implausible route guidance information. Extended "reaction" time of the Navigation System in

route guidance and planning, after vehicle departs from the originally planned route.

Intermittently, incorrect distances are displayed at intersections or highway exits (e.g. 200 feet or more). Situation is sporadic and can not be

reproduced in the same location (reproducible faults would indicate error in the CD map).

215

Or, vehicle position cursor on the map display drifts away from the road or runs alongside the road. This situation results in implausible

guidance information (system "tries" to return to the originally planned route), and in some cases the message: "You are leaving the digitized

area" is sent by the system.

5. On-board computer (BC) data missing from the on-board display.

After ignition key is turned "ON" (KL15) and screen is changed from "main menu" to radio/BC display, the displayed board computer data is

not complete. In most cases the missing values are: Range, Ambient Temperature, or Fuel Consumption. Sometimes, those values may

reappear during driving of the vehicle.

6. Route guidance intermittently remains active following "Destination Reached" display.

If the vehicle's ignition was turned "OFF" in the very moment the "Destination Reached" message was displayed on the board monitor, the

route guidance to that destination may remain active the next time the vehicle is driven (Navigation instructions are given, even though the

"Navigation" button was not selected from the "main menu" screen).**

Cause

**Software errors in the Operating Software of Navigation System Mark II.

Important:

None of the complaints described above are valid reasons for replacement of the Navigation Computer.**

Correction

**On a customer complaint basis only, load Navigation Computer with the updated version of Navigation operating software (CD V14.0).

Note:

Also, in case of hardware failure (not related to the situations described above) after replacement of the Navigation computer (on MK I or Mk II

systems), or the video module (on MK I only) the units have to be coded, and the computer must be loaded with the new CD V14.0 operating

software. **

Procedure

To load the new software:

1. Turn ignition to position 1 (terminal R).

Do not cycle the key or perform diagnosis while installing the new software. Make sure that the power supply is stable, i.e. do not switch on

any electrical loads.

2. Activate "GPS-Navigation" and acknowledge the screen disclaimer by pushing the rotary knob.

3. Remove the map CD from the navigation computer by pressing "eject" button.

**4. Insert the Software CD V14.0 into the Navigation computer (the CD-ROM V14.0 bears the P/N 01 59 9 789 299 Index "p").**

5. Mark I System (up to 9/97 production):

After a few seconds, the BMW roundel will appear on the board monitor and will be "filled in" clockwise to show the progress of loading

(approx. 3-4 minutes).

Mark II System (from 9/97 production):

After a few seconds, a menu of notes on loading procedure and "progress" bar appear on the board monitor.

When the loading process has been completed, the message "Software has been successfully loaded" is displayed.

6. First remove the operating software CD, and then confirm the end of the loading process by pressing the rotary push-button on the board

monitor. "Ok" appears in the display.

7. Reinsert the map CD into the Navigation computer.

**CD V14.0 contains the following operating software:

Software version Application

7.7(7.1 MMI*) Mark I - E39/E38 (up to 9/97)

3.0 Mark II - E39/E38 (from 9/97), E46, X5

4.0 Radio Navigation (E46 Europe only)**

*MMI is the "Man Machine Interface" software in the Video Module.

Note:

The Navigation Computer automatically recognizes the required version when the software is loaded.

**Previously released Navigation Software CD's (V 6.5, V 7,3, V 05, V09, V11, V12) should be discarded.

Changes/improvements for the Mark I (Mk I) system:

216

^ No changes were introduced since the previous releases (CD V12, and CD V11.1)

Changes/improvements for the Mark II (Mk II) system:

^ "Software Status" in the Set" screen change: The software/hardware version is now displayed as "2-1/30". The numbers have following

meanings: first digit 2 - is a 2nd generation navigation system (Mk2), second digit 1 - is a 1st device variant (top navigation - Mk2c color

screen); the last two digits 30 - are the software version (3.0).

^ A "Mayday" (emergency) phone call is initiated automatically after an airbag is deployed (on vehicles equipped with Navigation MK II, MRS 3

System and integrated cellular phone CMT 5000VR, CPT 6000VR or digital CPT 7000). MRS3 System was introduced as follows: 3/99 on

E39/E38, 06/99 on E46 coupe, 9/99 on E46 sedan, and since series introduction on X5 vehicles.

^ There is no need to manually enter VIN number into the "Telematics Settings" of the "Service Mode" of navigation computer on vehicles with

integrated cellular phones (see SI 84 05 97 from July of 1999). The VIN number is automatically transferred from vehicle ZCS coding data.**

^ The distance to destination is now displayed in up to four digits. This feature meets the need of long journeys, planned when using the

nationwide coverage provided on new Map CD's (release "1999.2", available since 7/99).

**^Demonstration Mode ("Taxi Mode") software is now included in the operating software. This feature allows full demonstration of the Navigation

System when vehicle is stationery (e.g. in the showroom). To activate the "Demonstration Mode:

a. Turn ignition to position 1 (terminal R)

b. Select "GPS Navigation" from the "main menu" screen, and then press Ok on the disclaimer screen

c. Verify that the current location is stored in the memory of the computer (to check current location, from the "main menu" select

"Emergency". The next screen displays current vehicle location). NOTE: vehicle must be located in the digitized area to have its position

evaluated correctly.

d. In the "Input Destination" menu, enter the desired destination

e. Press and hold Menu button for at least one second. The screen goes back to the "main menu", then select "GSP Navigation" again

f. With known current position and destination, select "Direction" from the destination input menu screen. The "Demonstration Mode" is

activated (system will give guidance instructions, distance to destination changes, in the route map mode the vehicle icon moves).

g. To exit the "Demonstration Mode" turn the ignition OFF, or start driving the vehicle.**

^ The "Route Direction Arrow" is displayed as a framed arrow instead of a filled one, to enhance the guidance screen appearance.

**^The quantity of language selections (from "SET" menu selection) in the system is reduced to two for US market (American English and Spanish),

due to software changes for European markets. (It is still possible to change languages and voice gender by using DIS/MoDiC, IKE

Nakamichi CD Changer - Important Installation/Operation Tips

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 65 11 99 dated September 1999.

MODEL:

E39, E46, X5 with Nakamichi CD Changer

Situation:

In response to initial field complaints of "Nakamichi CD changers jamming during operation", substantial hardware and software changes were

introduced to the Nakamichi units. Subsequently, only the improved changers are available from the BMW Parts Department listed under the new

part number: 82 11 0 009 836.

In case your BMW center parts department still has in its inventory the original Nakamichi CD changers (p/n 82 11 0 004 616), those units should be

returned using return part index TEC41.

The following important changes in the installation process have to be observed when the new, improved unit is installed:

-- When connecting the CD changer for the first time (after removing transportation screws and plastic locking plate), the unit will power up in the

transportation mode.

451

Nakamichi CD changer in the transportation mode:

-- LED above button 1 illuminates green

-- rest of LED's are red.

Manual Initialization:

-- In order to "manually" remove the transportation mode, press and hold button number 1 for three seconds. This will start the initialization

process (green LED on top of button 1 blinks for approximately 20 seconds).

When initialization is completed, all LED's above the buttons are off while the two loading guide indicators (located directly below disc loading slot)

turn green.

Important:

During initialization process do not move the unit or try to insert any CDS.

-- Initialization process has to be performed only once. There is no need to repeat the process even if the power/I-Bus connector is removed. In

case manual initialization was not performed, automatic initialization will start 10 minutes after power/I-Bus connector was plugged into the unit

-- Do not disconnect the 3-pin power/I-Bus connector from the CD changer while the unit is in operation (CD is playing). If it is necessary to

disconnect power supply from the changer, ensure that the unit is in the stop mode by selecting either AM or FM band on the radio.

In order to ensure the proper operation of the Nakamichi 6 CD unit, the guidelines listed below should be followed:

-- Before installing CD changer, please make sure that the glove box door operates properly (closes without excessive use of force). If necessary,

the glove box should be adjusted prior to installation (refer to Repair Instruction 51 16 360)

When marking the mounting hole locations, make sure that the appropriate template is placed exactly as specified in the installation instructions.

"The upper edge of the template lines up firmly against the REAR (towards front of vehicle) and RIGHT sides of the glove box, while the front edge

closely surrounds the latching mechanism".

Any deviation from the above position will prevent the glove box (with installed CD changer) from closing properly.

452

When mounting CD changer (1) in the bracket sleeve (2), make sure that the side with two foam strips (3) will face the bottom.

In case of reversed installation it will not be possible to close the glove box.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT:

If the Nakamichi CD changer installation requires usage of power/I-Bus extension cable-p/n 82 11 0 006 458 (X5 vehicles equipped with factory

Navigation and/or DSP amplifier, or E46 vehicles with factory Navigation), ensure that the correct power/I-Bus connector has been identified in

the left rear corner of the trunk.

Before making a connection, the black 3-pin CD power/I-Bus connector (X18180) has to be identified by checking its wiring configuration:

-- Pin # 1 - Brown wire (ground)

-- Pin # 2 - Red wire (power)

-- Pin # 3 - White (or white with yellow/red tracer) wire.

The X18180 connector is located:

X5 CD and telephone harness location:

-- X5 vehicles: behind the navigation computer support bracket, attached to the audio/amplifier harness (see illustration S65 00 U01)

-- E46 vehicles: at the bottom of the navigation support bracket, attached to the CD 6-pin data cable.

Do not attempt to connect power/I-Bus extension cable of the CD changer to the black 3-pin phone compensator connector (X1765), which has

identical connect housing as a CD power/I-Bus connector X18180, and is also located in the left rear trunk corner (see illustration S65 00 U01).

The compensator connector (X1765) is always attached to the phone data/pow wiring harness (on X5 vehicles near 26-pin "D" sub connector, on

E46 vehicles near 26-pin ELO connector).

Connecting CD changer with power/I-Bus extension cable to the phone compensator connector (X1765), will cause the CD unit 3 Amp fuse to blow

Also, in some cases the fuse for the phone system can fail as well (on X5 vehicles: F74 located in the right rear trunk corner, on E46 vehicles: F39

located in the glove box).

-- After installing CD changer make sure that the glove box closes easily, without requiring excessive force.

Use of excessive force when closing the glove box door can damage the transporting mechanism of the CD changer.

In some cases, due to tolerance variations of glove box assemblies, it is necessary to adjust the glove box door to ensure proper clearance between

CD changer and fuse box carrier.

453

Adjustment example:

In order to adjust the glove box door on E46 vehicles, loosen 4 screws located underneath glove box (1), and then move door assembly (3) towards

rear of vehicle (about 2 mm) until easy closing is achieved.

-- Before inserting a CD into the loading slot, please make sure that the loading guide indicator lights turned green (2 loading guide indicators are

located on both sides, just below the loading slot opening).

-- When loading a CD, gently insert the disc into the loading slot and do not apply any additional force after loading mechanism starts to pull the

disc into) the changer.

-- Always keep the disc level (perpendicular to the face panel) when inserting it into the loading slot.

Nakamichi CD Changer - Important Installation/Operation Tips

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 65 11 99 dated September 1999.

450

451

When marking the mounting hole locations, make sure that the appropriate template is placed exactly as specified in the installation instructions.

"The upper edge of the template lines up firmly against the REAR (towards front of vehicle) and RIGHT sides of the glove box, while the front edge

closely surrounds the latching mechanism".

Any deviation from the above position will prevent the glove box (with installed CD changer) from closing properly.

452

DISCLAIMER

213

route guidance to that destination may remain active the next time the vehicle is driven (Navigation instructions are given, even though the

214

E46 New Vertical Headlight Adjustment Settings

Model

E46

Situation

Since July of 1999 production, E46 halogen headlights are adjusted to a new (vertical) specification. The new headlight setting will address

customers complaints of: "headlight beams are adjusted too short".

When performing headlight adjustments on E46 (3 series) vehicles only the new specification should be used.

PROCEDURE

Before adjustment:

Ensure that the vehicle is parked on a flat, level surface 10 meters in front of the viewing screen (e.g. wall), measured from the front of the headlight

lens. Verify that all tires are correctly inflated.

-- Load driver's seat with 165 lb. (75 kg) of weight. The fuel tank should be full, or appropriate additional weight should be placed in the trunk.

Adjustment procedure:

-- Measure the height of the headlight from the ground to the center of the headlamp (center=optical axis, which is marked by the third horizontal

line on the lens).

-- Use that dimension to mark a horizontal line on the wall (H).

-- Switch headlights on. Proceed with adjustment as shown.

When adjusting headlight assembly, both adjusting screws have to be used:

SUBJECT:

CD Changer (Nakamichi or Alpine) Failure During Installation

MODEL:

E46, X5 with optional Alpine or Nakamichi CD Changer

Situation:

After connecting power supply to the CD changer during installation (directly to the unit in case of Alpine changer, or thought power/I-Bus

extension cable for Nakamichi units), changer remains inoperative. The changer's 3 Amp fuse (located in the back of a unit) is blown, and in some

cases a fuse for a phone system (F74 on X5 vehicles, or F39 for E46) is found to be defective as well.

Cause:

The 3-pin phone compensator connector (X1765) was mistakenly identified (and plugged into a changer) instead of a power/I-Bus (X18180)

connection. Both connectors have identical housing, and are located in the left rear trunk corner.

The compensator connector was introduced to the telephone wiring harness in preparation for a new digital cellular phone (CPT 7000).

Correction:

During installation before connecting harness to the CD changer, the black 3-pin CD power/I-Bus connector (X18180) has to be identified by

checking its wiring configuration:

-- Pin # 1 - Brown wire (ground)

-- Pin # 2 - Red wire (power)

-- Pin # 3 - White (or white with yellow/red tracer) wire (I-Bus)

The X18180 connector is located:

X5 CD and telephone harness location:

350

-- X5 vehicles: in the left rear quarter panel (behind the navigation computer bracket), attached to the audio/amplifier harness (see illustration S65

00 01)

-- E46 vehicles: at the floor of left rear quarter panel, attached to the CD 6-pin data cable.

Note:

For easier identification: the compensator connector (X1765) is always attached to the phone data/power wiring harness and can be found: on X5

vehicles near 26-pin "D"-sub connector, on E46 vehicles near 26-pin ELO connector.
