SITUATION



Customer may complain of "hard" or "no shift", and one of the following "Gear Error" fault codes will be stored in the TCM: FC 50, 52, 53, 55. No



other fault codes are present in the transmission control module.



CAUSE



Valve body malfunction / sticking valves.



CORRECTION



If fault code 50, 52, 53, or 55 is stored:



1. Check the condition and level of the transmission fluid.



2. If the trans fluid level/condition is OK, then exchange the valve body.



3. If the trans fluid condition/level is not OK, or if any other transmission related fault codes are stored (other than 50, 52, 53, or 55), contact the



Technical Hotline for repair authorization.

SUBJECT



A5S360/390R; Hard Shifts, Leak at Torque Converter Seal



MODEL



Z3 with GM5 from 6/00 up to 7/01



E39 with GM5 from 9/99 up to 7/01



E46 and E46xi with GM5 from 6/98 up to 7/01



SITUATION



1. All shifts very hard.



2. Noise from transmission oil pump.



3. Hard shifts with FC30 (mechanical torque converter clutch monitoring) in EGS fault memory. A combination of 1 - 3 above.



4. Transmission fluid leak from radial seal on torque converter.



CAUSE



Situation 1 - 3: Improper alignment of sliding seal in pump. From start of production to July 2001, transmission serial numbers 55000-209255.



Situation 4: Improper alignment of torque converter guide sleeve in pump. From start of production to transmission serial number 413022.



CORRECTION



Determine affected parts, replace as necessary.

PROCEDURE



1. Remove transmission oil pan and check condition of oil. Oil should not smell burnt or be excessively contaminated with wear particles.



2. Remove transmission and check torque converter for ease of movement. Torque converter should rotate easily.



Remove torque converter and check sliding surface of radial oil seal on torque converter shaft for signs of wear (grooves).



If above checks are OK:



Replace transmission torque converter housing with oil pump, using special torque converter housing repair kit. Part number 24 40 7 520 492.



Refer to repair instructions 24 40....



If torque converter shaft is grooved;



Replace transmission torque converter housing with oil pump (P/N 24 40 7 520 492), and torque converter (refer to EPC). Refer to repair



instructions 24 40....



If transmission oil smells burnt, is heavily contaminated with wear particles, or torque converter is difficult to turn:



Replace transmission.



Note:



Technical Hotline authorization is required for the replacement of any GM5 transmission.

Interior - Cracking/Clicking Noises From Sport Seats

Cracking or Clicking Noise from Sport Seats



MODEL



E46



SITUATION



Some owners of E46s produced before 9/2001 and equipped with Option Code 481 Sport Seats may complain of a cracking or clicking noise from



the seat cushion when cornering or accelerating/decelerating.



CAUSE



Seats produced prior to 9/2001 may have a small amount of play in the tilt adjustment.



CORRECTION



In case of customer complaint, 0-rings can be installed in the tilt adjustment mechanism to eliminate the play that causes the noise.



PARTS INFORMATION



This repair will require the following parts.

PROCEDURE



Slide the seat all the way to the rear. Adjust the seat to its highest position. Adjust the tilt so that the cushion is at its highest position.



Remove the Torx bolts from the tilt adjustment on both sides of the seat as illustrated.

Pry out the cushion brackets far enough to insert 0-rings over the bushings that the cushion brackets ride on, as indicated by the arrow.



Pop the brackets back into place and reinstall the Torx bolts.
