Want The New BMW Z4 With A Manual? Go To Europe

American-spec Z4s will have the eight-speed automatic only.

We should be thrilled the new BMW Z4 even exists. After all, the premium roadster segment is not exactly the most profitable for automakers. But as we learned when speaking with BMW at Paris not long ago, the Z4 was a justifiable model in part due to the Porsche 718 Boxster and its winning formula. Sure, there’s plenty of BMW roadster heritage going back decades, but Porsche proved a modern small roadster can be done right.

As we already knew, the new Z4 will be offered in the US with an eight-speed automatic transmission only. That may not please some potential buyers, but that alone shouldn’t prevent them from shunning the Z4 outright.

But if they really, really want a manual-equipped Z4, they’ll have to move to Europe. According to Car and Driver, a six-speed manual will be offered for the entry-level Z4 20i, a model which won’t even come to the US in the first place. However, BMW claims it has not entirely ruled out a manual-equipped Z4, but it’s not on the agenda right now. Also don’t think that the Z4 20i is some lighter weight “purist” version because it’s not.

Despite having the manual, it’s powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 197 hp. To compare, the refreshed 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata now offers 181 hp and weighs just over 2,300 pounds.

Just because America isn’t getting a stick shift Z4 at the moment, there's no reason to get depressed. Think about it. The new Z4 was at least engineered to handle a manual, so it’s okay to keep dreaming. The Z4 options America will have are more than good enough. The base Z4 sDrive30i will come powered by that same turbo four only in a higher state of tune (255 hp). The M40i will have a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Ideally, that’s the engine for the manual.

China Poised To Beat Europe In Electric Car Race

Europe may as well go where the customers are.

It seems like every time an auto show rolls around, we hear about the latest Chinese automaker that is ready to conquer Tesla and eventually sell electric vehicles in the United States. While some are vaporware, it's hard to ignore how big of a role China will play in the coming years as EVs become more popular. While only 1% will actually succeed, there are so many startups in the EV sector that actually equates to a substantial number.

European automakers like BMW have also enlisted the help of Chinese partners for EV production. Some reports, including a recent one from CNN, say that Europe may simply need to give up in the race towards EVs and focus on building cars in China.

When speaking about EV production, Simone Tagliapietra, an energy analyst at a Milan-based think tank said, "Europe might well see its carmakers massively moving production to China in the future." Building electric cars in China would place European automakers closer to their potential customers and avoid any tariffs.

China is also where most of the batteries for EVs are produced, so "it just makes sense to produce electric vehicles where batteries are also produced," Tagliapietra said. Currently, two-thirds of lithium-ion batteries are produced in China. Only around 1% of these batteries are produced in Europe and it would take a huge investment in order to catch up.

China also holds the advantage as the world's largest market for electric cars. With the massive pollution issues in China, EVs will soon become more of a necessity than a luxury. Even Volkswagen and Tesla have announced plans to build factories in China, showing how viable the country is for EV production.

Europe is trying to become more friendly towards EV production but it simply cannot match China. "In Europe, there's a lot of hassle and a lot of procedures to follow. It takes a long time," said Kee Koolen, chairman of Lithium Werks, adding that China has a "long-term vision" for EV production, while Europe does not.

Automakers in Europe didn't take EVs seriously initially and will now have to play catch up with China. European automakers are finally launching new EV models including the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC, and Audi e-Tron but it may already be too late to catch up with China.

Take That, Europe! The US-Market BMW Z4 Is More Powerful

How do you like getting the short end of the BMW-stick?

Hearing about a hot new European car that will only be sold in some "dumbed down" version in North America is nothing new. Take the E36 generation BMW M3 for example. Europe's 3.0-liter S50 inline-six engine had a more advanced VANOS system and individual throttle bodies, so it produced 285 horsepower, which was later upped to 3.2-liters with 321 hp.

Meanwhile, the US-spec M3 was hampered with a lesser version of this engine producing just 240 hp. So why are we bringing up something that happened over two decades ago? Well, the US is finally about to have its revenge.

BMW recently revealed the power figures for the 2019 Z4 in sDrive30i and M40i trims. The sDrive30i produces 255 hp from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, while the M40i produces 382 hp from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six. That is, unless you live in Europe.

Recently, Europe has switched over to a new, stricter, testing procedure for emissions called the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). As a result, companies like Volkswagen have been forced to lower the power output of cars like the Golf R to meet the restrictions.

And because of these strict guidelines, the European Z4 M40i will only produce 342 hp, 40 less than the US car.

With less power on tap, the European Z4 will be slower to 60 mph (4.4 seconds compared to 4.2). We aren't sure exactly what changes BMW has made to the B58 engine to meet the WLTP rules, but it may be possible to tune the car on the aftermarket to gain back the lost horsepower.

Of course, the legality of doing so may differ from country to country, and we aren't sure if any of the engine internals have been changed in order to make the engine pollute less. Either way, the US has finally scored a win over Europe with a more powerful Z4.
