Windshield Wiper Blades - Noisy/Not Cleaning Well

GROUP 61

General Electrical Systems

Bulletin Number

61 07 00

Woodcliff Lake, NJ

July 2000

Service Engineering

This Service Information bulletins replaces S.I. 61 02 94 dated May 1994.

SUBJECT

Windshield Wiper Blades are Noisy, or Do Not Clean Properly

MODEL

All

SITUATION

Wiper blades in good condition may make noise during operation, or may fail to clean the windshield properly.

CAUSE

These situations may be caused by contaminants on the glass or blades, or by the blades or arms being out of adjustment.

349

CORRECTION:

The first step in eliminating wiper noise is to ensure that the glass and the blades are clean and free of contaminants. Common contaminants that are

not removed by conventional glass cleaners can be removed with Bon Ami(r), a household cleanser.

The cleanser should be applied on a wet cloth or sponge and the windshield must be thoroughly and evenly scrubbed. Wipe off the residue with a

clean, dry cloth before the cleanser dries on the glass.

If there is evidence of heavy overspray of waxes or silicones on the glass, a wax and silicone remover can be used to remove them.

Clean the wiper blades with a clean cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.

Once the blades and glass have been cleaned, check the adjustment of the wiper arms and blades per Repair Manual, section 61 61 100, and adjust as

necessary. The adjustment gauges and tools for all models have previously been distributed. Refer to Special Tool CD SD-92-1 29 for ordering

additional tools, as well as the various Repair Manuals for instructions on using them.

Rear Airbag Activation/Deactivation Procedure

Starting with June 1999 production, vehicles equipped with rear side airbags (option code 261) will arrive at the BMW center with the rear side

airbags deactivated. The rear HPS (head protection system), on E38 as of 3/99 production, will remain active from the factory. THE CUSTOMER

MUST BE INFORMED OF THIS SITUATION PRIOR TO DELIVERY.

MODEL:

E38, E39, E46, E53 with option 261 (rear seat side-impact airbag)

Situation:

Accident research shows that the safest place for children in an automobile is in the rear seat. However, a child sitting in the rear seat and not

properly restrained may place his or her head on or near the side airbag. It may be difficult for a driver to ensure that children in the rear seat will

remain properly positioned at all times and not place their heads on or near the side airbag. BMW of North America Inc. recommends that the

customer should deactivate the rear-seat side airbags if they plan to transport children in the rear seat of their BMW.

Although the rear side door airbags are deactivated, the rear side door air bag equipped vehicles will have "AIRBAG" stamped on the door trim

panel as illustrated.

Note:

This situation is not critical for the HPS. Therefore, BMW does not recommend the deactivation of the HPS.

This rear airbag status at the time of vehicle production is listed.

Correction:

Prior to new car delivery, the customer must be informed that the rear side airbags are deactivated. BMW of North America, Inc. will provide

rear-door side-airbag deactivation and reactivation free of charge to the customer, through all BMW centers, on a customer request basis only. Rear

HPS, if available will remain active, unless the separate deactivation of the rear HPS system is requested by the customer and performed by a BMW

center.

(Important:

Although the rear HPS can be deactivated, BMW NA does not recommend performing this procedure. Therefore, the customer will be

responsible for paying any cost associated with the deactivation of the rear HPS.)

Affected Vehicles:

E38, E39, E46, E53 with option 261 (rear-seat side-impact airbag)

271

E39 - BMW Accessory Navigation System Speed Input Signal

MODEL:

E39, 5 series vehicles manufactured after 06/99

Situation:

During the installation of the BMW Accessory Navigation System into E39 vehicles, the speed signal input (male pin # 3 in the connector X322)

cannot be found.

Cause:

Since July of 1999 production, the separate speed signal (Speed-A) output harness has been eliminated from series production. The speed

information is now made available to the connected control modules in the form of a telegram via the body bus (K-bus). By design, the Accessory

Navigation System is not capable to extract speed signal information from the K-Bus.

Correction:

When installing the BMW Accessory Navigation System into E39 vehicles manufactured after 06/99, the Speed-A signal wire has to be fitted

between the instrument cluster (pin # 3 of the 18-pin connector X10113 for the IKE, or pin # of the 26-pin connector X11176 for the Kombi) and

pin number 3 of the X322 connector (located in the rear left corner of the trunk).

Such a modification is not covered by the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.

Procedure:

415

For the Speed-A signal adapter harness use one of the wires from the Airbag Repair Cable (P/N 61 12 8 386 368) and the male socket connector P/N

61 13 0 007 452.

1. Cut through the single wire from the Airbag Repair Harness, at the length of 12 feet, starting from the female Siemens connector.

2. Strip off insulation at the end of the cut wire (stripped length 4.5 mm), and crimp the male socket connector P/N 61 13 0 007 452. Use the

appropriate crimping tool - e.g. pliers with die block P/N 61 9 041 found in the Electric Repair Kit IV P/N 61 9 020.

3. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Repair Manual RA 62 11 200.

Find connector (1):

416

-- X10113 (18-pin natural) on vehicles with IKE, or

-- X11176 (26-pin natural) on vehicles with low cluster

4. Disassemble the connector by removing the locking tab (sliding it upwards), and then removing the housing assembly as shown on the

illustration.

5. Insert female Siemens connector of the adapter harness into the slot number:

-- 3 of connector X10113 (IKE), or

-- 14 of connector X11176 (Kombi).

6. Route the Speed-A signal adapter harness along the Accessory Navigation Harness A, as shown on the illustration (for routing details refer to

Accessory Navigation Installation Instruction P/N 01 21 9 790 598)

417

7. Route the adapter wire to the right, towards the air vent pipe, and then down the rear center of the dash, behind the radio-mounting bracket (2).

8. Route the speed signal adapter wire (4) down and back toward the rear compartment going through the center console following the route of

harnesses B3 and B4. Then continue over the transmission tunnel, to the rear seat area and finally out to the trunk going through the grommet.

9. Route the speed signal adapter wire with harness branches A9, B3, and B4 under the carpet, from the back of the center console to the top LH

edge of the transmission tunnel. Then route cables along the bottom edge of the rear seat, finally under the rear seat towards the trunk.

10. Route the harness into the trunk through the grommet (1), towards connector X322.

418

11. Locate connector X322 (A) that is mounted behind the radio amplifier bracket, in the left trunk corner. Detach the connector from the bracket

and disassemble connector's housing.

12. Insert the male pin socket (2) from the speed signal adapter harness into slot number 3 of connector X322 (1).

13. Proceed with the other installation steps for BMW Accessory Navigation System.

Stabilant 22A Electrical Contact Enhancer

MODEL

GENERAL INFORMATION

Connectors carrying low current, are particularly susceptible to the formation of deposits. These deposits affect the resistance of the circuit running

through the plug connector and, depending on the sensitivity of the particular circuit, can cause system malfunctions (very often intermittent in

nature), and the activation of warning lamps and check control indicators. Airbag circuits and sensor circuits are typical examples of low current

circuits.

In many cases, part replacement may temporarily cure the problem, not because the part was faulty, but because the wiping action of disconnecting

and reconnecting the connector wipes clean the metal to metal surfaces within the connector itself.

Where the connector may be the cause of the vehicle problem:

-- Without disconnecting the connector, if possible, measure the resistance of the circuit running through the connector to confirm the connector

has high resistance. A good connector will have close to zero ohms resistance.

-- Remove both male and female terminals from the connector housing and visually examine them to confirm the integrity of the wire crimps, and

in the case of certain types of male terminal, the integrity of the weld of the male pin to the terminal itself. Reinstall the terminals in their

housings.

-- Liberally spray both male and female connectors with a zero residue electrical contact cleaner.

-- Allow to air dry. Do not dry with shop air supply as this may recontaminate the connector.

-- Read and understand any Stabilant 22A safety precautions provided by the manufacturer.

-- Apply Stabilant 22A to both male and female connectors so the terminals are completely wet. A cotton swab may be used if required.

-- Reconnect the connectors while still wet.

Stabilant 22A evaporates and leaves a thin polymer film which is conductive between the mating surfaces, while staying non-conductive between

adjacent pins. At the same time it prevents the formation of any further harmful deposits.

NOTE:

Stabilant 22A must not be used on Oxygen Sensor connectors. To function, oxygen sensors require a flow of oxygen through the terminal

Re-Sealing Door Sound/Vapor Barrier

169

MODEL:

All

Situation:

Occasional customer complaints of water leaks are encountered where the cause of the leak is found to be a poor seal of the sound/vapor barrier in

one or more doors. If this barrier is not sealed properly, especially on the bottom, water can run down between the inner door frame and the door

trim panel, and then into the car.

If the barrier must be removed partially or completely for access to the interior of the door, careful attention must be paid to removing and

refastening the barrier to prevent water leak problems in the future.

Correction:

If the vapor barrier is suspected to be leaking, remove the door panel on the affected door to gain access to the barrier. Carefully check the barrier

for tears or loose adhesive holding it to the inner door frame. Refer to appropriate Repair Manual, section 51 48 ..for complete instructions on

correct location of sealant strips.

386

To function, oxygen sensors require a flow of oxygen through the terminal

connector to the sensor element. Stabilant 22A will affect this flow of oxygen, and will result in irreparable damage to the sensor.

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 72 03 99 dated June 1999.

SUBJECT:
