BMW To Build More SUVs In China Because Of Tariffs?

A decision will come very soon.

Ever since the trade war and resulting tariffs between the US and China began several months ago, automakers had to react in order to protect their business interests. BMW is no exception. Although its Spartanburg, South Carolina production plant, home to the X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7, has been a huge success story, the trade conflict between America and China could have a negative impact.

According to Reuters, BMW is only a few weeks away from making a decision regarding building more SUVs in China in order to minimize the damage of lost revenue. Those tariffs are expected to hurt the German automaker’s 2018 earnings by around $344 million.

The most obvious solution to fixing that for 2019 would be to increase SUV production, specifically the X3, in China to avoid those tariffs entirely. “We will take a final decision in the coming weeks about which model to localize next in China,” Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter said.

In fact, Peter also noted that X3 sales have actually increased ever since BMW began producing it in Asia as well. It no longer needs to rely so much on export from the US. Would BMW’s decision to shift more X3 production from the US to China hurt American jobs? Unknown. But again, BMW needs to look out for its greater interests and all the more so when it involves one of its best-selling models.

If it costs some jobs at one factory then so be it. “If the tariffs undermine the competitiveness of BMW production and sales in the US, the result could be strongly reduced export volumes with negative effects on investments and jobs in the US,” according to BMW spokesman Kenn Sparks. The X3 is not the only volume seller that could see a partial production shift to China; the X5 is also a candidate.

Earlier this year BMW stopped exporting the X3 from the US to China, so this whole tariff war thing is very real. Just last month, BMW announced it was spending $4.2 billion to take full control of its main joint venture in China, a clear-cut sign the automaker will soon become less reliant on Spartanburg.

In 2017, Spartanburg built over 370,000 SUVs and more than 270,000 of those were exported to China and other overseas markets. Spartanburg should be okay in the immediate future thanks to increased US demand for SUVs and the all-new X7, of which it will be the sole producer. Nevertheless, Spartanburg’s star status has just taken a hit.

What if Audi Were to Build an RS3 Sedan?

If the production green light is given, then we're hoping the car will look like this.

The upcoming sedan version of the Audi A3 will be arriving in showrooms very soon. It should appeal to those who want to upgrade from a Volkswagen Jetta or even a Golf to something a little more grown-up, something that will look better in the office building parking lot. Within that buyers’ group, there will almost certainly be those who crave additional power and performance. Will Audi oblige? Rendering artist Theophilus Chin certainly hopes so and so do we.

This is his rendering of what a high-performance RS3 Sedan could look like if it were to ever reach production. It looks fantastic and that big rear spoiler is a great touch. Those larger front air vents and big rear tailpipes also work very well. Audi has yet to approve the car, but it’d be awfully cool if it did.

Was BMW’s Decision To Build A New Euro Production Facility A Reaction To Tariffs?

In this day and age, perhaps.

Terms like “free trade” and “tariffs” have been in the news a lot lately and for good reason. As a consequence of the United States slapping tariffs on many of its long-time trading partners from Europe as well as Mexico and Canada (not to mention China), corporations across the world need to protect their own interests. BMW, for example, has just announced plans to open a new $1.2 billion production plant in Hungary, its first new facility since 2000. Bloomberg reports that this plant, once operational, will produce 150,000 vehicles a year.

But what does this new facility have to do with tariffs and trade? BMW is making sure its operations are secured in Europe, thus enabling it greater future flexibility when it comes to exports. By comparison, BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina facility produces over 400,000 vehicles annually, so this new Hungarian plant is not a replacement (at least not yet). Spartanburg is where BMW builds its hot-selling SUVs, specifically the X4, X5, and X6.

Only the other day we reported that BMW has been forced to increases the X5 and X6's price tags in China due to newly imposed tariffs. But say if those same vehicles were, one day, built at the new Hungarian plant? Assuming the EU and China are not in the midst of a trade war, then those price increases wouldn’t be necessary.

This does not mean Spartanburg is shutting down, let alone slowing production volumes. However, it is a clear sign BMW wants to further cement its position in Europe and, by extension, other markets as well. Other major automakers, such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz, also have production facilities in Hungary. “We are now strengthening our activities in Europe to maintain a worldwide balance of production between Asia, America and our home continent,” BMW CEO Harald Krueger said in the statement.

This Is The Brutal M3 Wagon We Wish BMW Would Build

It’s more powerful than the M3 Competition Package.

For reasons unknown to us, BMW refuses to build a wagon version of the M3 despite offering the 3 Series Sports Wagon. Sure, there was the E46 M3 Touring, but that was a one-off that never entered mass production. In the US, the 330i XDrive is available with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine developing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft, as well as a 180 hp, 280 lb-ft diesel variant. In Europe, there’s also a range-topping 340i, but that clearly wasn’t enough for this owner who has effectively created the full fat M3 wagon BMW refuses to build.

The project started life as an unassuming diesel-powered 3 Series Touring but now it packs an M3 S55 engine under the hood. The owner also fitted a stage two tuning kit extracting 530 horses from the biturbo inline-six 3.0-liter engine, making it significantly more powerful than the standard M3. It’s even more powerful than the M3 Competition Package and the 460-hp M3 CS Limited Edition.

In addition, the owner fitted the super wagon with the M4 GTS’ hood and steering wheel, along with an M Performance exhaust and the M3’s Competition package. You can see the wild wagon in action in a video recorded at the 2018 Bimmerfest in the Netherlands. It looks and sounds sublime and makes us wish BMW would make an official M3 wagon. We’ll have to wait and see what the next-generation M3 lineup brings. Until then, this probably won't be the last custom-built BMW M3 wagon we'll see.

Will BMW Ever Build A Proper Supercar Again?

BMW's Head of Design hasn't said yes. But crucially, they haven't say no either.

BMW must be getting tired of being asked when it’s bringing out a new supercar – and no, the i8 hybrid doesn’t qualify. The fact remains that there hasn’t been a proper BMW supercar since the beloved M1. And that was 40 years ago. In the future, we’ll start to see a change in design direction from the Bavarian automaker. While new cars like the new G30 BMW 5 Series have been criticized for looking uninspired and too similar to its predecessor, BMW has recently shown off some genuinely stunning concepts like the 8 Series Concept and Z4 Concept.

Best of all, the production versions apparently should look very similar to the concepts. BMWBlog recently caught up with BMW’s new Head of Design Jozef Kaban to find out more about BMW’s new design direction and the possibility of a new supercar. Kaban joined BMW’s design team around a year ago after leaving Volkswagen where he worked on designing the Bugatti Veyron. Yes you read that right, the designer of one of the most iconic supercars ever made is Head of Design at BMW. BMW has often been criticized for producing models that are difficult to tell apart, but the plan is to introduce more distinctive models to broaden BMW’s line-up.

“With the portfolio of the brand, we’ve had [an opportunity] to talk to customers, and I think with this portfolio, we’re planning in the future to split them a little bit, to diverse them a little bit,” he said. This is great news for BMW fans. But is there any hope of BMW ever building a supercar, considering its Head of Design once worked on the Bugatti Veyron? “I came to BMW to help with other thinking, to give them another opportunity to think about [new] things.” he said. “BMW is doing great cars, maybe there is space to dream about the next [new car], maybe something more extreme.” By no means is this confirmation that a BMW supercar is happening, but it wasn’t a flat-out no, either.

BMW also recently revealed that it’s considering producing a more powerful version of the i8 coupe that could push the hybrid sports car into supercar territory.

The M2 Competition will likely please a lot of enthusiasts, but there are some people who prefer their sports car to be a bit less serious, and a bit more open-top. BMW has already said it does not want to build an M2 convertible, because the M240i convertible already fills the role in the lineup. If you simply won't settle for an M240i and want a full on M2 convertible, a German tuner shop called Lightweight Performance has you covered.

This is the same company that stuffed a 600 horsepower engine from the M4 GTS into an M2. In total, the project cost around 75,000 euros to build. For comparison, the M2 costs 59,900 euros in Germany and the M240i Convertible is 54,300. The one-off creation has been nicknamed "Hillary," though LW Performance doesn't go into specifics on where the name came from. Clearly, a lot of work was done to keep a factory feel, because this M2 convertible looks remarkably close to something BMW would build on a production line. The car even features the same 3.0-liter S55 inline-six mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as the normal M2.

Not content to leave the engine stock, LW Performance bumped the power up from the stock 365 horsepower, to 422 hp (more than the new M2 Competition). This car also packs features not found on a standard M2, including 305/25/21 section tires in the rear, with 20-inch wheels up front and ABS tuning from the M4 GTS. The interior even includes plenty of alcantara and leather, keeping this car looking just like an M2 coupe. This is truly the closest thing in the world to a factory M2 convertible.
