With the introduction of Mk II Navigation System on E38 and E39 vehicles (since 9/97 production), a different BMW Roadside Assistance phone

number (800 599 4809) has been established for specific use on Mk II Nav vehicles.

Interface through the Board Monitor. The following procedure is part of the installation process, and can be found in the installation manual.

NOTE:

If the I-Bus Interface Box in the vehicle is ever replaced, the RSA number programming procedure must be repeated.

The illustrated table provides information regarding the usage and location of the Roadside Assistance Number in vehicles with Navigation System.

NOTE:

The original Roadside Assistance number (800 332 4269) is still to be used for those customers who do not have vehicles equipped with the

Navigation System.

Identity Transfer Kit for CMT 5000VR and CPT 6000VR Phones

MODEL:

E39, E38

Situation:

The new Identity Transfer Kit (P/N 99 00 0 000 817) allows transferring the NAM (Number Assignment Module) programming and repertory

memory information (names and phone numbers) from a transceiver diagnosed as defective into a replacement transceiver for CMT 5000VR, CPT

6000VR phones.

Utilizing the equipment eliminates the need for the technician and/or customer to reprogram such information manually in the event of a transceiver

replacement.

Important:

Unfortunately, the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) of the transceiver cannot be transferred during the procedure, due to FCC regulations on

newer generation equipment. The local cellular carrier has to be contacted to transfer the new ESN number. Also, the customer has to reprogram

the voice tags into the memory of the phone.

Distribution of the following tools will be through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Additional tools may be purchased through your PDC.

Please refer to Parts Information bulletin I-24 dated 4/95 for tool warranty details. All prices in this bulletin are introductory prices. Introductory

prices are only valid during the Automatic Tool Shipment.

Clock Inaccurate

MODEL:

Complaint:

Clock Inaccurate.

General Information:

The Time of Day function on E38 and E39 may be displayed on the instrument cluster, MID, or Board Monitor. However, in all cases, this clock

function is controlled by the Instrument Cluster or IKE.

Clock accuracy is precisely calibrated by a quartz crystal in the Instrument Cluster / IKE, to maintain acceptable accuracy over its entire operating

environment. Two factors external factors influence clock accuracy:

1) Voltage supply less than 9 volts

2) Temperature extremes. (See chart)

Procedure:

In case of a customer complaint, confirm that there are no fault codes set in the Instrument Cluster / IKE for "Voltage Supply". If there are, correct

the cause of the low battery voltage first, as this is the likely reason for the customer complaint.

In cases where clock accuracy needs to be checked, a two-step procedure should be followed:

Step 1

Set the clock to "Radio time", advise your customer to recheck the time by the same method after a minimum of (1) week. If the customer confirms

the inaccuracy, arrange for the vehicle to be booked in for repair. Continue to Step 2 below.

Step 2

Set the clock to "Radio time", and refer to chart to estimate a reasonable time period for the test considering the likely temperatures of the instrument

cluster/IKE during the test. For example, for instrument cluster temperatures between -4锟斤拷F and +86锟斤拷F, the clock accuracy should not gain more than

0.2 seconds per day, or lose more than 0.3 seconds per day (see chart). Use "Radio time" to recheck the time at the end of the test.

BMW Navigation System CD V 08-Operating Software for Mark I System

MODEL:

E38, E39

*Information:

The new CD BMW Navigation V 08 is going to be distributed to every retail center through the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. The part

number remains the same: 59 9 789 299, index has been changed to "j".

CD V 08 contains the following operating software:

Software version Application

7.3 Mark I-E39/E38 (up to 9/97)

2.2 Mark II-E39/E38 (from 9/97)

2.1 Radio Navigation-E46 (from 3/99)

The Navigation Computer automatically recognizes the required version when the software is loaded.

Previously released Navigation Software CD's (V 6.5, V 7.3, V 05) should be discarded.*

Situation:

The operating software for the Mark I Nav System Computer has been revised. The original operating software carried version designation 6.5

which was updated in production as of approximately May 1997 to version 7.0. While version 7.0 contained many system enhancements, it did not

eliminate various software problems. Version 7.3 (contained in CD V 08) addressed these software problems.

The operating software in the navigation computer and in the video module can be updated by means of the CD ROM drive of the navigation

computer.

Customers who own an affected vehicle, have been informed in 09/97 by the data base supplier Nav Tech, to arrange an appointment for an update

of the system. This update is going to be performed free of charge to the customers, because of the software errors in the existing versions 6.5 or 7.0.

Any future updates of the operating system software which represent system enhancements will be offered to customers as an optional customer pay

upgrade item.

The operating software CD is for workshop use only and must not be given to customers. Every retailer will be supplied with two operating software

CD V 08.

Affected Vehicles:

All E38, E39 with Navigation System Mk I, software versions V 6.5 and V 7.0 (option 609), from start of series production up to September 1,

1997.

(Later production vehicles are equipped with the Navigation System Mk II at the factory).

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer

Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges illustrated are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered the only deciding factor

Additional Information:

Customers will be informed about the update by the letter from Nav Tech.

The improvements may only be obtained when loading both, the updated map CD (already distributed to customers by Nav. Tech.) and the updated

operating software.

Turn the ignition key to terminal R (ignition key in position 1).

NOTE:

Do not cycle the key or perform diagnosis while installing the new software. Make sure that the power supply is stable, i.e. do not switch on any

electrical loads. Activate "GPS-Navigation" and acknowledge the screen disclaimer by pushing the rotary knob.

Remove the map CD from the Navigation computer by pressing the eject button.

Note:

It may be the case in some vehicles that the CD sticks in the drive when ejected, due to a piece of a plastic "flash" on the edge of the CD. You

can release the CD by knocking lightly on the front panel. It will then be ejected.

Insert the Software CD V 08 into the navigation computer.

The CD-ROM bears the PN. 01 59 9 789 299 Index "j".

Important:

Do no turn off the ignition key during the software loading, it can cause a fault in the navigation computer. In this case it may be necessary to

replace the navigation computer.

The monitor will be gray for approx. 20-30 seconds, the message "BITTE WARTEN" (please wait) will appear to be followed by the BMW roundel

which will be "filled in" clockwise to show the progress of loading (approx. 3-4 minutes).

Note:

If the roundel does not appear after you have inserted the Software CD, the latest operating software has already been loaded in the navigation

414

computer and video module. The monitor will be gray for up to 20 sec. The message "BITTE WARTEN" will appear. The CD will then be

ejected.

Once loading has been completed, a message (see Illustration)

"software has been loaded" is displayed.

Now first remove the CD and then confirm completion of loading by pressing the rotary push-button on the on board monitor. The MENU will be

displayed again.

Note:

It is not necessary to recalibrate the navigation system.

Reinsert the customer's map CD into the navigation computer after the menu display appears.
