Guess Who Prevented The New Toyota Supra From Being A Mid-Engined Porsche 718 Fighter

Let’s just say the guy has some serious influence.

In the very near future, Toyota will gift the world with an all-new Supra sports car. Like its predecessors, it will retain its front engine setup, but that almost didn’t happen. In a recent interview with Top Gear, Gazoo Racing chief and Supra program leader Tetsuya Tada admitted that “in the planning stages we suggested a mid-engined layout and BMW was happy to go with it.”

BMW, of course, was Toyota’s sports car platform development partner. The all-new Z4 roadster is BMW’s version while Toyota will build the Supra coupe. But what or, more precisely in this case, who stopped any idea of a mid-engined platform? That would be Akio Toyoda himself.

“I took the idea to Toyoda and he told me off,” Tada admitted. So why was the Toyota and current CEO so against going mid-engined, especially when “the Porsche Cayman has been (Toyota’s) dynamic benchmark from the start"? The answer is quite simple. “We stuck with front engine because of feel and control. We know how to control a front-engined car, we already have that capability.”

Despite BMW being game for something mid-engine, the final decision to stick with the front-engined layout did not affect the agreement to use the German automaker’s 3.0-liter straight-six with around 300 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission for both sports cars. Tada also told Top Gear that a stripped-out, track-focused Supra is already planned.

Set to be called the Supra GRMN, this racing version could shave off over 200 pounds compared to the road going Supra. “We know if you take out 100 kg (220 lbs) it’s a completely different car – you don’t even need any more power.” But will the Supra GRMN be track-only? “We’re investigating both avenues, there’s always a trade-off because being road-legal brings restrictions.”

Considering Toyota has already confirmed the new Supra NASCAR, it makes sense for the company to explore additional motorsport opportunities, such as the LM GTE category. A few participants already include the likes of the Ford GT, Ferrari 488, and Porsche 911.

40 Years Of Toyota Supra – Part 3: The Revival Of Supra

The return of the icon, and what we know about the new one.

By the time the fourth generation Toyota Supra ended production in 2002, it had outgrown any aspiration initially envisioned for the marque when it first debuted back in 1978. In Part 1 of our 40 Years of Supra special, we saw how Toyota’s Z-car rival was born and started out as a disappointment before blossoming into a competent sporty GT car. Part 2 detailed how, from the third generation onwards, the Supra evolved into a genuine sports car and ultimately a giant-slayer of the automotive world, a true cult classic. But after the Mk IV departed, fans of the marque were given little hope of its return. Toyota had set its sights elsewhere.

Rumors Of Revival – The FT Concepts

In 2007, Toyota debuted a new high-performance concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The FT-HS (Future Toyota-Hybrid Sport) concept fueled rumors that the Supra nameplate was on the verge of a revival, and that it may feature for the first time a 3.5-liter V6 engine and a hybrid system to enable outputs in excess of 400 horsepower. But the trail went cold, until 2009 when the FT-86 concept was unveiled.

The collaboration between Toyota and Subaru spawned something sporty with big potential, but Supra fans were gutted that the FT-HS’s V6 had been replaced by a Subaru flat-4. It quickly became apparent that the FT-86 was not a Supra revival, something confirmed by Toyota after going on record that it was a spiritual successor to the AE86 Corolla.

The 86 went on to reach production in 2012, and while it wasn’t a Supra, rumors were strong that there was a Mk V Supra in the pipeline still. The rumors were fueled more by desire than fact, although the 2010 registration of the Supra name at US trademark offices added fuel to the flaming desires of the fans. Toyota didn’t shut down the idea altogether, just those rumors that the Supra would arrive soon, claiming that if a Supra-successor were developed, it would not be rushed, and depend on the success of the GT86 and Scion FR-S.

2014 marked an important milestone for the rumored revival though, as Toyota unveiled the striking FT-1 concept to the world that January. The concept was shrouded in secrecy, with little information given about potential powertrains other than the fact that it was front engined and rear-wheel drive. The design was said to be influenced by historic sports cars like the 2000GT, Supra, MR-2, and the FT-HS concept from seven years earlier. The designers also cited the lengthy hood was able to house an inline-6, the traditional engine of the Supra.

The FT-1 sparked desire and fueled the flames of rumor once again, and when in February of 2014 Toyota applied for the Supra trademark again, fans of the brand could hardly believe their eyes and ears. Could it be true; could a Supra revival finally be on the cards after 12 years of dormancy? The signs looked promising, and Toyota didn’t deny it this time, instead teasing that a Supra revival could happen if demand was high enough.

BMW Partnership

Before the FT-1 had debuted, back in 2012 Toyota and BMW struck up a partnership that was said to involve sharing of technology. At the time, it was initially believed that BMW would utilize Toyota for its advanced knowledge of hybrid systems, as BMW was planning to launch the ‘i’ brand of electric vehicles.

But subsequent to the FT-1 and potential for a new Supra, the partnership took on a new role. BMW needed a new Z4, and Toyota needed a new Supra – the partnership seemed a match made in heaven, and BMW’s advanced knowledge and dedication to inline-6 cylinder engines seemed almost too coincidental. By 2015, the internet was awash with stories detailing the new Supra, and when news broke of the 2016 registration of the Supra trademark in Europe, we could barely control ourselves.

With Toyota seemingly back on track when it came to performance, and the Gazoo Racing sub-brand seemingly in full swing, it seemed that the new sports car could potentially wear a Gazoo or GR badge rather than a Toyota one – many believed that a sports car of this status would be at odds with Toyota’s product line-up and target audience at the time.

But the Supra was all but confirmed. Insiders at Toyota and Toyota’s global chief engineer Tetsuya Tada even confirmed that if there was a new sports car, it would likely bear the Supra nameplate due to the historical significance of the car for the brand.

Confirmation Of A90 Supra – The GR Supra Racing Concept

Then came the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Toyota fans, and in particular Supra-philes, were in for a treat after confirmation arrived that a Supra would be on display and that the nameplate was officially being revived.

The concept displayed – the GR Supra Racing Concept – also highlighted Toyota’s commitment to race the new Supra under its Gazoo Racing sub-brand. Fortunately, the concept on display wasn’t just some farfetched model unlikely to make it to production. Strip away the monstrous wing and the racing livery, and beneath it all, there was the shell of a genuine production Supra – one that looked remarkably like the FT-1 concept that first got us all excited.

Along with the concept, Toyota also confirmed that the new Supra going into production would continue the model codes of old Supras in being the A90 Supra. After 16 long years of hiatus, the legendary marque had officially returned, with production slated to begin for 2019.

What We Know About The A90 Supra So Far

So with the new A90 Supra quite literally around the corner, this is what we know so far:

It’s already been confirmed that the Supra will share underpinnings with the BMW Z4, the same Z4 that debuted at Pebble Beach last week. While we already knew this would mean a front-engined and rear-wheel drive Supra, it also gives us an indication as to what we can expect under the hood.

The Supra has already been confirmed to utilize an inline-6 cylinder engine, and it’s almost guaranteed that this will be the 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 engine from BMW, currently used in the brand’s ‘40i’ designated vehicles. With the Supra though, we expect outputs to rest around the 375hp mark. It’s by no means a 2JZ, but then again, few engines are comparable to the legendary 2JZ.

But there’s going to be a 4-cylinder too. Toyota is intent on making the Supra an accessible sports car, and with that, the brand will also make use of BMW’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder B48 engine developing up to 260 hp. Toyota may want to broaden the appeal of the Supra, but it needs to remember that it was the six-cylinder engine that transformed a mere Celica into a Supra in the first place. Is it really fitting to call a 4-cylinder a Supra?

With shared engines, it should come as no surprise that the A90 Supra will also utilize the same 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox as BMW, which is in no way a bad thing. A manual gearbox might well be an option, and insiders are trying to make it happen, but at this stage, rumors suggest Toyota may ditch the manual shifter altogether.

The Supra and Z4 are going to share a lot more than just drivetrains though, as the two are believed to share much of each other’s interiors, along with upholstery options. However, it is believed that the Supra in its base incarnation will undercut the Z4 substantially, and even offer cloth upholstery in order to make that plausible.

Here’s the thing though, even with a 4-cylinder engine, the Supra’s gonna be quick. Damn quick. That’s because it’s going to be compact, with leaked documents suggesting it’s only 5.5-inches longer than the Toyota 86. It’s also going to make use of composite and aluminum body panels to reduce weight, with a target of around 2600 lbs. That means immense power to weight, and a high likelihood of the Supra once again being the pinnacle of automotive handling.

Of course, with the production reveal yet to take place, we’re left waiting eagerly to see whether the 40th anniversary year of the Supra is going to be the year the Supra marks its return in the same way the A70 and A80 Supras did – by redefining an era of JDM performance, and sports cars as a whole, in a way few others could.

Can't Afford A New Toyota 86? Here Are 7 Cheaper Alternatives

Even an affordable sports car can have cheaper alternatives.

The Toyota 86 (and its Subaru BRZ twin) are heralded as "affordable" sports cars. With starting prices of $26,455 and $25,595 respectively, the Toyobaru twins are reasonably priced, but even this budget may be too high for first-time car buyers. Opt for the sportier Toyota 86 TRD Edition or Subaru BRZ tS, and the price easily approaches $35,000. Everyone deserves a sports car, no matter their budget. That is why we have come up with seven cheaper 86/BRZ alternatives on the used market.

C6 Chevy Corvette

For less than $20,000, most people don't expect their sports car to offer heart-stopping straight-line performance. The 86 and BRZ only produce 205 horsepower from a 2.0-liter flat-four, but a used C6 generation Corvette produces nearly double this figure. We found plenty of C6 generation models for less than $20,000, all powered by a 6.0-liter LS2 V8 pumping out 400 hp. Who said affordable sports cars had to be slow?

Nissan 370Z

We are eagerly awaiting Nissan's replacement for the 370Z, but the current car is still remarkably fun to drive. The 370Z is the second most powerful car on this list, courtesy of its 3.7-liter 332-hp V6. Because it has been on the market since 2009, prices are now extremely affordable and can be found for as little as $13,000. It may lack the rear seats of the 86 and BRZ, but it makes up for it with an extra 127 hp.

Porsche Cayman

Though it may seem hard to believe, you can actually buy a used Porsche for less than the price of a new Toyota. The Porsche Cayman may have two fewer seats than the Toyota or Subaru, but it does have an extra trunk up front. We found first-generation Cayman and Cayman S models for less than $20,000, both of which are more powerful than the 86 twins. The base Cayman is powered by a 2.7-liter 245-hp flat-six, while the S has a larger 3.4-liter engine with 295 hp. Aside from the power, the Cayman is considered one of the best driver's cars for any money with its mid-engine layout and razor-sharp Porsche handling and chassis balance.

BMW 135i

The BMW 3 Series has grown beyond its roots as a nimble sports coupe as it spawned the 4 Series, but the 1 Series picked up the fun, small-car mantle. The lesser 128i was no slouch with a 230-hp 3.0-liter inline-six, but we'd opt for the 135i with the 300-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six. It may cost a lot more to maintain than a new Toyota, but the extra power and tunability may be worth it for some people. Cheaper 135i models are powered by a twin-turbo N54 inline-six, but we suggest spending a bit more and opting for the twin-scroll N55 engine found on 2011 and newer models. Do some digging, and you can even find the 320-hp 135 is for less than $25,000.

Honda S2000

Unlike the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ, the Honda S2000 wasn't build to be an "affordable" sports car. When it was new, the S2000 was priced around $35,000, but used prices have sunk well below $20,000. Even though it came out way back in 2000, the S2000, with its 2.0-liter 240 hp inline-four, is still more powerful than the 86 twins. The S2000 wasn't just more potent, it revved to 9,000 rpm in the AP1 generation and a still-impressive 8,200 rpm in the AP2 generation.

NC Mazda MX-5 Miata

The word 'Miata' stands for "Miata is always the answer." Just kidding, it actually means "reward" in Old High German. Rewarding is exactly the word we would use to describe driving a Mazda Miata. A used current-generation ND Miata can be found for as little as $17,000, but the previous NC generation from 2006 to 2015 is the best bargain at the moment. The NC was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with around 160 hp. Early examples with high mileage can be found for as little as around $6,000, but $10,000 is enough to buy a really nice one.

Scion FR-S

When the 86 twins first arrived in the US, they were sold as the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. When Toyota discontinued the Scion brand, it took the FR-S and rebadged it as the 86. If you can't afford a new 86 or BRZ, just get a used FR-S. Prices have sunk to around $10,000 on the low end, which is less than half the price of a new 86. You may be losing an extra 5 hp, but it is worth it to pay half the price.

Future Toyota Sports Cars Won’t Take As Long To Develop As The New Supra

Time to get things moving along here.

In January 2014, Toyota revealed its absolutely stunning FT-1 concept at the Detroit Auto Show. It immediately spurred talk of a reborn Supra and exactly five years later at the same show the production version will finally be unveiled. But five years is a really long time even for a vehicle whose platform was jointly developed with the BMW. The new BMW Z4 didn’t appear in concept form until over a year ago at Pebble Beach and the production car debuted this past August.

So if BMW can move things along at a decent pace, why can’t Toyota? Top Gear spoke with the Japanese automaker’s European CEO, Dr. Johan van Zyl, in Paris last week and asked him that very question.

“We started from scratch, right from the beginning,” Zyl said. “The new Supra is not a changed product, it’s a completely new product. The outcome is going to be very exciting.” Which is great and we’re very excited, but again, why the half a decade wait? “I think one of the things that’s driving us is how to be more agile (as a brand), and how to shorten these lead times,” he added. “In the future, we think we will be able to reduce some of the development time. But not just that: in Europe, we’re focusing on model-based design and development. But of course, it takes a certain amount of time to make a good quality car. And of course, (the Supra) was a joint venture.”

Toyota President Akio Toyoda, as we’ve long known, issued a directive several years ago to build more emotional cars and move away from plain vanilla. Of course, that takes some time to make happen. The right engineers and designers need to be hired. Managers also need to fully understand and appreciate why emotion is vital in today’s car industry. Take the 86, for example. It’s been a success for Toyota's image but its sales have never been stellar. Will there be a successor? “For the GT86, it would have to be developed with Subaru”, van Zyl said. “It depends on the product and the circumstances. Some we might go alone, some we do in joint venture when it suits us.”

And that, everyone, is exactly the right mentality. Yes, the 86 and Supra both had development partners, but this doesn’t always have to be the case going forward. For example, there was some recent talk about a revived Celica or MR2. If this turns out to be true, here’s hoping we won’t have to wait ten years to see it happen.

8 Sporty Coupes For The Price Of A Toyota Camry

Can you really find a sporty coupe for Camry money?

Behold the Toyota Camry: safe, spacious and sensible. The ideal family car then. With the recent redesign rectifying the previously uninspiring exterior styling and a new platform introducing an uprated suspension it looks and feels a bit sportier now too. It may still be a mid-size sedan but not unlike a middle-aged middle manager, it has grown slightly in every direction. The driving experience is smooth and unruffled and you have a choice of three engines, one a hybrid, with plenty of trim levels to suit your specific requirements.

Trims For Every Budget

The base L model starts at an entirely reasonable $23,495 and for that you get, well, not very much actually. Toyota’s Safety Sense driver aid package comes standard as does a reversing camera and LED daytime running lights, but most shoppers will pay the extra $500 for the LE trim which adds 17-inch alloys and a power driver’s seat while also opening up a selection of optional equipment. The range has been cleverly staggered to slowly upsell you in small increments until you unwittingly find yourself driving off the showroom floor in the range topping XSE V6.

Ticking All The Boxes

This trim packs all the toys. Aside from the 301-hp 3.5-liter V6, notable standard features include a panoramic sunroof, color head up display and a big 8-inch touchscreen. Pricing starts at $34,950 but once we add a fancy exterior color, the advanced driver assist package and an all-weather floor liner package we manage to spec an XSE up to a few dollars shy of $40,000. That is a fair chunk of change for a family runabout and we are now encroaching into the territory of some very capable and luxurious European rivals, not to mention a fair few sporty coupes.

Coupe Alternatives

Now a small two-door coupe is clearly not a direct competitor to a Camry but think about how regularly you actually need those rear seats and that huge trunk. That’s right, hardly ever. Plenty of coupes offer rear seats too, big enough for the school run and with some clever packing you could squeeze enough into the trunk for a family of four. So, with that in mind, we set out to find some of the best sub-$40,000 sports coupes out there as well as a few 2-seater convertibles for good measure too.

Toyota 86

Let’s start with the driver focused coupe from Toyota themselves. The 86 has been around for a while and under various guises too (think Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ), yet despite the usual complaints that its 200-hp 2.0-liter boxer engine is a bit gruff and breathless, it offers one of the best driving experiences around. Starting at $26,975 for the base model, you can spend up to $30,900 on the GT Black edition. That’s a whole 10K less than the Camry and it includes the available TRD lowering springs and performance exhaust too.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

If you feel that your children should rather make use of the school bus than the family car then the Mazda Miata suddenly becomes a tempting possibility. The base Sport trim starts at $25,295 but the one you should get is the mid-range Club trim. For around $3,500 more you also get an uprated suspension as well as improved shocks and a limited-slip differential. Pick the automatic transmission though and you lose all of these track-biased features, as you should. This is a manual transmission only type of car. RF models offer a hard-top convertible and are also well within our budget.

Fiat 124 Spider

The Fiat 124 Spider may be heavily based on the Miata but other than the different exterior styling and turbocharged engine, it offers its own unique suspension setup and driving feel. With this one you will want the top Abarth trim as it is the one that offers the performance-tuned suspension, uprated brakes and LS-diff. You will need around $29,000 for this one, which is the equivalent to a well-equipped 2.5-liter XLE model in Camry world. No hardtop coupe-style alternative available with this one and the two-seat layout does limit its practicality so let's look at a few more options.

Nissan 370Z Sport

The 370Z has been around for so long it’s almost as if Nissan forgot it was still building it and never bothered to switch off the robots at the factory. Drive one and the old-school V6 and weighty controls definitely feel as if they are from a different era. Yet there are signs of modernization, there is a clever rev-matching manual transmission and various tweaks throughout production have resulted in a very enjoyable driving machine. You can spend almost $50,000 if you go for the top NISMO trim but the real value lies with the 370Z Sport which is a much more reasonable $33,570 and offers an LS-diff and sport brakes over the base trim.

BMW 2-Series

BMW may be all about big 6 and 8-cylinder luxury sports sedans these days but it earned its sporting reputation with small and nimble 4-cylinder models like the E30 3-series and earlier 2002. The contemporary 230i is a modern equivalent of these cars and its 248-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine gives it plenty of pace too. Prices start at $34,950 which leaves you with a bit extra to spend on the myriad of pricey options.

Ford Mustang GT

The Mustang GT is not quite as sharp a driving tool as the little 2-Series but it still has a lot going for it, not least a characterful 460-hp 5.0-liter V8 and more space inside for the family. Sure you can get an even less pricey turbocharged 4-cylinder Mustang too but if we are looking at $40,000 as our budget then the GT Fastback or even the luxuriously-equipped GT Fastback Premium are the ones to have.

Chevrolet Camaro

The Camaro has a similar set of skills compared to the Mustang. It also offers tight yet usable rear seats, is pretty handy along a mountain pass and it too has a big 455-hp 6.2-liter V8 under its hood. It may be down 5-hp on the Mustang but it does offer 35 lb-ft more torque and an even more intoxicating sound track. Stick to the 1SS trim and you will dip below the $40,000 mark too.

Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack

The Dodge Challenger is a more traditional take on the muscle car theme, it is more of a straight-line specialist than the rest of the cars here but if you want the most power for your money then this is the one for you. The R/T Scat Pack produces 485-hp from its 6.4-liter V8 and also offers spacious rear seats and a trunk that's more than big enough for family holiday duties. Aside from the thirsty V8, it is an entirely usable daily-driver that offers much of the practicality of a Camry sedan and a whole lot more driving thrills.

High-Performance Toyota Supra And Manual Transmission In The Pipeline

A convertible version also hasn't been ruled out.

Toyota is really dragging out the reveal of its long-awaited sports car. The all-new Supra made its public "debut" at the Goodwood Festival of Speed but was still wearing camouflage to hide important details. Toyota recently hosted a media drive where journalists could drive the new Supra, but the car still wore camouflage and no details were offered on pricing or power output.

This didn't stop Australian outlet Car Advice from digging for answers, and a few important details were leaked by the Supra's assistant chief engineer, Masayuki Kai.

For starters, the question that has been on the minds of every enthusiast waiting to see the Supra was asked: will it be offered with a manual transmission? The assistant chief engineer said that a manual has been developed for right-hand-drive markets. He was speaking to an Australian outlet and Australia is an RHD market, so this doesn't preclude the manual from also being offered in LHD markets.

"This is not yet finally decided [introduction of a manual transmission], and depending on feedback from the market, we will decide if we should introduce a manual transmission," Kai said. Based on every comment we've read on our Supra news pieces, Toyota would be silly to not offer a manual.

This would also be an interesting way for Toyota to differentiate the Supra from the automatic-only BMW Z4 which shares the same platform.

Car Advice also asked about the possibility of a more powerful version of the Supra. BMW has already said that the M40i will be the most powerful version of the Z4 and that no Z4 M is planned. Toyota, on the other hand, said a more powerful version of the turbocharged inline-six engine is in the cards.

"Yeah of course. We are still studying bigger engines and different transmissions. Everything is still being studied. I don't think a V8 or something will be fitted because the weight distribution will be destroyed. But more power with inline six should be possible," said Kai.

"For future development, we are now planning and we are discussing this with BMW. What our wishes are for a facelift and future versions, extra versions, they are also providing us what could be the next update on transmission, engine and so on. It's not finished."

Finally, he was asked whether a Supra Convertible was on the table. We simply figured because the Z4 was a convertible, the Supra would be a coupe-only and there would never be a Z4 coupe. Much to our surprise, Kai said "As for now, yes. But, if BMW wants to make a coupe, it's their own decision. There is no restriction – for example, if we want, we can also make an open roof Supra. But, this is currently not being investigated. Never say never, everything is possible."

Well, there you have it. While nothing has been officially confirmed, we can still retain hope that the Supra could have a manual transmission, more power, and a convertible variant in the future.
