SUBJECT
E39, E53 Intermittent IHKA/IHKR Blower Operation
MODEL
E39 (5 Series) produced prior to 6/2000
E53 (X5) produced prior to 6/2000
SITUATION
Blower of the air conditioning system (IHKA or IHKR) fails intermittently. The IHKA LCD display indicates that the blower is functioning
correctly.
CAUSE
The blower final stage resistor (blower output regulator) is faulty.
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, replace the final stage resistor with an improved part
([NEW] PN 64 11 6 923 204).
PROCEDURE
To replace the IHKA/IHKR final stage resistor:
The blower final stage resistor is located next to the right side footwell vent duct.
Remove trim panel from the right side of the oddment tray (1).
Remove cover from underside of the glove box (2).

Remove the connector from the final stage resistor (2). Press down at the securing tab at the bottom of the resistor (1), and pull the final stage
resistor out of the heater/air conditioning box.
While removing the final stage resistor, do not pull on the metal bridges protruding from the face of the resistor.
Final stage resistors exhibiting visible damages to the metal bridges will be returned to centers and claims will be debited.
