Recall 11V-521 - Replace Turbo Auxiliary Coolant Pump

SI B11 08 11

Engine

May 2012

Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 11 08 11 dated March 2012.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER

DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

BMW centers must ensure recalls are completed after having been notified by BMW of North America, LLC (BMWNA) that a safety-related defect

or noncompliance exists in any motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment in the center's possession at the time of notification. In BMW NA's

case, this notification would typically be made by the issuance of a recall notification in the form of a Service Information bulletin (SIB) or

transmission of a Dealer Communication System (DCS) recall message.

2010 BMW 750i xDrive AWD (F01) V8-4.4L Turbo (N63) Page 66

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if a recall campaign is announced by BMW NA, centers must ensure

that all recalls on new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are completed BEFORE delivery to the consumer. This means that centers

may not legally deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers with an open recall.

The Safety Act also prohibits centers from selling or leasing the motor vehicle or item of replacement equipment, unless and until the open recall has

been completed BEFORE delivery. This also pertains to vehicles in the Certified Pre-Owned program, and to items of replacement equipment.

Finally, BMW centers should not sell or use parts that have been recalled by BMW NA. Please follow the specific instructions provided by BMW

NA on the return or disposition of the parts.

Recall Campaign 11V-521: Replace the Auxiliary Coolant Pump for Turbocharger

MODEL

F01 and F02 (7 Series) with N63 engine (including Alpina B7/B7L) or N74 engine

F04 (ActiveHybrid 7) with N63 engine

F07 (5 Series Gran Turismo) with N63 engine

F10 (5 Series) with N63 engine

E70, E71 (X5, X6) and E72 (ActiveHybrid X6) with N63 or S63 engine

SITUATION

Moisture ingress into the electronics of the turbocharger auxiliary coolant pump could cause a short circuit. This short circuit may cause the auxiliary

water pump to overheat. In rare cases where overheating occurs, a fire in the engine compartment or in the entire vehicle is possible.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Recall Campaign involves all models with the N63, S63 and N74 engines that were produced from November 16, 2007 to February 2, 2011.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Recall Campaign, first check the

B-pillar label for code number 604. If code number 604 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 604 has

not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on

the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION

Replace the auxiliary water pump for the turbochargers with an improved pump (refer to parts information). Refer to Repair Instruction RA 11 53

000 (5, 6 and 7 Series) or RA 11 53 090 (X5 and X6) for replacement of the pump and proper coolant bleeding procedures.

[NEW] Note:

The E72 (ActiveHybrid X6) is equipped with an additional auxiliary coolant pump for the hybrid electronics systems. The auxiliary water pump for

the turbocharger (1) is located lower on the engine block, close to the crankshaft pulley.

[NEW] The auxiliary water pump for the hybrid electronics (2) is above the mechanical water pump for engine cooling. Do not replace the auxiliary

coolant pump for the hybrid electronics.

This repair procedure involves draining a small quantity of coolant; replenish the drained quantity with new BMW long-term Antifreeze/Coolant

(50/50 mixture). Do not reuse the drained coolant.

Note:

Please refer to the Customer Satisfaction Support section below for additional customer assistance.

PARTS INFORMATION

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 604. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-403) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 604 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on

top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

SUBJECT

Rear Seat Ventilation Is Perceived as Weak or Not Working

MODEL

F01, F02, F04 (7 Series)

F07 (550i Gran Turismo)

Vehicles equipped with SA 454 (Rear Ventilated Seats)

SITUATION

With the rear seat ventilation switched on, the customer perceives that the ventilation (air flow) is weak or not working at all.

CAUSE

In most cases, the rear seat ventilation is working properly. The design and function of the rear seat ventilation is a further development of the

system used in the previous 7 Series (E65/66), and should not be compared to in regards to function and operation. An intelligent temperature

control has been incorporated for enhanced comfort. The functional description of the rear seat ventilation operation in this bulletin will be

integrated into a future ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application) version.

INFORMATION

Functional Description and Operating Information;

1. The ventilation of each seat is individually adjustable. Each seat consists of the following components:

^ 2 radial fans (one for each seat and backrest, fitted on the insulation box under the front edge of the seat cushion; the backrest fan in the F07 is

located on the backrest rear panel).

^ 2 ventilation mats (one for each seat cushion and backrest on the foam section)

^ 2 NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) temperature sensors (seat and backrest)

2010 BMW 750i xDrive AWD (F01) V8-4.4L Turbo (N63) Page 369

2. The ventilated rear seats are equipped with a temperature control. This controls the fan output and fan speed according to the set temperature. The

seat bottom and backrest are each controlled separately (similar to the logic of seat heating).

^ Setting 1: Slightly cool

^ Setting 2: Medium

^ Setting 3: Cold

3. When switching down from setting 3 to 2 or from 2 to 1, and if the seat ventilation was active for longer than 1 minute, the seat ventilation is

switched off briefly for a fixed amount of time. The seat ventilation then continues to run at the temperature-regulated state at the nominal

temperatures for that specific setting.

4. After switching on setting 3, it runs for a fixed time at 100% PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) speed. After this time, the seat continues to run at

the temperature-regulated state at the nominal temperatures for that specific setting.

5. If the ventilated seat is active when the MAX AC function is switched on (only in vehicles equipped with 4-zone air-conditioning system), the seat

setting is switched automatically to setting 3. When MAX AC is switched off, the system is adjusted to the previously selected setting again.

6. If seat heating and seat ventilation are running at the same time, the ventilated seat is operated at a fixed fan speed for that specific setting. The

temperature control is not active for as long as the seat heating is active (seat heating and seat ventilation use the same temperature sensor).

7. For acoustic masking, the permissible fan speed is limited by vehicle speed and the fan output of the ventilation system. The function is designed

so that even at speeds used in city traffic or at medium fan speeds, there is no longer any limit on fan speed. However, when the vehicle is stationary

and with automatic heating and air-conditioning switched off, noise disturbance to passengers is avoided by limiting the fan speed.

Fuel System - Alcohol Fuel Blend Usage

SI B13 01 06

SUBJECT

Alcohol Fuel Blends in BMW Vehicles

MODEL

All with gasoline engines

SITUATION

Fuel blends containing a high percentage (above 10%) of alcohol, mainly ethanol, are becoming more commercially available. Customers inquire

about the possibility of using alcohol fuels (e.g., E85) in BMW vehicles.

INFORMATION

Fuels containing up to and including 10% ethanol; or other oxygenates with up to 2.8% oxygen by weight, that is, 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl

ether); or 3% methanol plus an equivalent amount of cosolvent will not void the applicable warranties with respect to defects in materials or

2010 BMW 750i xDrive AWD (F01) V8-4.4L Turbo (N63) Page 169

workmanship.

Usage of such alcohol fuel blends may result in drivability, starting, and stalling problems due to reduced volatility and lower energy content of the

fuel. Those drivability problems may be especially evident under certain environmental conditions such as high or low ambient temperatures and

high altitude.

Only specially adapted vehicles (FFV - Flexible Fuel Vehicles) can run on high alcohol fuel blends. BMW, for the various technical and

environmental reasons explained below, does not offer FFV models.

Usage of E85 or any other high-alcohol content blend (e.g., E30) in BMW vehicles will cause various drivability complaints (cold-start problems,

stalling, reduced performance, poor fuel economy, etc.); may cause excessive emissions; and may cause irreversible damage to engine, emission

control and fuel delivery systems due to incompatibility of materials with alcohols.

General Notes Regarding E85 Fuel

E85 fuel contains 85% (by volume) ethanol and 15% gasoline. Ethanol can be produced chemically from ethylene or biologically from grains,

agricultural wastes, or any organic material containing starch or sugar. In the US, ethanol is mainly produced from corn and is classified as a

renewable fuel.

Similar to gasoline, ethanol contains hydrogen and carbon with additional oxygen molecules built into its chemical chain. This chemical structure

makes ethanol's burning process slightly cleaner than gasoline (lower tailpipe emissions).

On the other hand, due to lower carbon content, ethanol provides 27% less energy (for identical volume) than gasoline, resulting in reduced fuel

economy of E85 vehicles (approximately 22% higher consumption). Increased fuel consumption requires appropriately enlarged fuel tank capacities

(usually a 30% increase), and specific DME calibrations for E85 lower stoichiometric air/fuel ratio (10 compared to 14.7 for gasoline engines).

E85 fuel volatility is typically lower than gasoline (RVP 6-10 psi, compared to 8-15 psi for gasoline). Lower fuel volatility will reduce vehicle

evaporative emissions, but it may cause cold-starting problems, especially with lower ambient temperatures.

Under certain environmental conditions, mainly lower ambient temperatures, ethanol separates from the gasoline/alcohol mixture and absorbs water.

The ethanol-absorbed water molecules are heavier than gasoline or ethanol; they remain at the bottom of fuel tank and, when introduced into the

combustion process, they tend to form an extremely lean mixture resulting in misfire, rough idle and cold-starting problems.

Certain materials commonly used with gasoline are totally incompatible with alcohols. When these materials come in contact with ethanol, they may

dissolve in the fuel, which may damage engine components and may result in poor vehicle drivability.

Some metals (e.g., zinc, brass, lead, aluminum) become degraded by long exposure to ethanol fuel blends. Also, some nonmetallic materials used in

the automotive industry such as natural rubber, polyurethane, cork gasket material, leather, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyamides,

methyl-methacrylate plastics, and certain thermo and thermoset plastics degrade when in contact with fuel ethanol.

In order to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle running on E85, the vehicle must be compatible with alcohol use. Some manufacturers have

developed vehicles called FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicle) that can operate on any blend of ethanol and gasoline (from 0% ethanol and 100% gasoline to

85% ethanol and 15% gasoline). Ethanol FFVs are similar to gasoline vehicles, with main differences in materials used in fuel management and

delivery systems, and DME control module calibrations. In some cases, E85 vehicles also require special lubricating oils.

Aftermarket conversions of gasoline-powered vehicles to ethanol-fueled vehicles, although possible, are not recommended, due to internal materials

and DME software incompatibility as well as the high costs of conversion.

[NEW] In order to correctly diagnose various drivability complaints caused by fuel blends with a high level of ethanol content, refer to SI B13 05

10, Testing Fuel Composition for applicable tools and procedures.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Components damage/malfunctions or any drivability problems caused by the use of fuels containing more than 10% ethanol (or other oxygenates

with more than 2.8% oxygen by weight) will not be covered under BMW warranties with respect to defects in materials or workmanship.

CAUSE

The CIC internal HDD recognizes the inserted CD or DVD as already copied onto the HDD and will play the music from the HDD database and not

from the CD or DVD.

Therefore the music data copied from the copy protected CD or DVD onto the HDD can be corrupted and cause the audio output dropouts and/or

distortions during playback.

Note:

CDs or DVDs that are played back in the CIC internal DVD drive but are not copied onto the HDD do not show this behavior.

2010 BMW 750i xDrive AWD (F01) V8-4.4L Turbo (N63) Page 126

CORRECTION

Do not replace parts and do not perform any repair attempt!

This is normal operation of the entertainment system.

Delete the music data stored on the CIC internal HDD and play the music directly from the CD or DVD inserted into the CIC internal DVD drive.

Please explain the behavior of the entertainment system to the customer.

MODEL

F01

F02

F06

F10

F12

F13

E70

E71

SITUATION

Customers with one of the vehicles above may complain that the engine's oil consumption is "too high," resulting in engine oil top-ups and workshop

visits to address the issue before the vehicle displays an engine oil service as being "due."

When the vehicle's engine oil drops to the minimum level, a message will display in the vehicle advising the driver to "add 1 quart of engine oil."

After topping up and continued operation, the "add engine oil" message may display again before an engine oil service is required and performed.

CAUSE

Engines that are fitted with a turbocharger, as part of their normal operation, will consume engine oil at a higher rate than a naturally aspirated

engine (non-turbocharged engine).

In this case, a "turbocharged" engine could require topping up of the engine oil more frequently.

PROCEDURE

Engine oil: Topping up

When one of the above vehicles displays a message to add 1 quart of engine oil, BMW recommends adding 2 quarts of engine oil instead.

The engine's oil sump design allows the additional quart; the result is a total capacity of 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) of engine oil.

Engine oil: Maintenance services and engine repairs

When performing all future engine oil maintenance services and repairs that require draining and refilling the engine oil, the new recommended refill

specification is 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) of engine oil.

The current version of the oil capacities chart, in Group 11 of the Operating Fluids Manual in TIS, has been updated as of 3/2013.

The current version of ISTA/D is not correct. The updated filling specification will be corrected in ISTA/D 2.38.

Engine Oil: E72 X6 xDrive50i Hybrid, ActiveHybrid 750i and ActiveHybrid 750Li

Important:

This Service Information bulletin excludes the E72 X6 xDrive50i Hybrid, ActiveHybrid 750i and ActiveHybrid 750Li vehicles, because the

hybrid engine oil pan dimensions are smaller.

When a BMW approved repair procedure requires draining and refilling the engine oil:

^ Refilling the engine oil to the new capacity is claimable with the applicable repairs that are covered under the terms of the BMW New

Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program.

^ Refilling the engine oil to the new capacity is claimable when a required engine oil maintenance service is performed under the terms the

BMW Maintenance Program.

^ Engine oil top-ups by themselves are not covered.
