SI B12 24 09

Engine Electrical Systems

October 2009

Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL

AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL

DELIVERY.

SUBJECT

Service Action: Retrofit Oil Level Sensor Ground Strap

MODEL

E82 and E88 vehicles with N51 engines, produced from 4/27/2009 to 8/17/2009

SITUATION

The ground strap between the oil level sensor (QLT) and the bracket for the sensor connector was not fitted during production.

CAUSE

A poor oil level sensor ground connection may lead to implausible measured values for the engine oil level or oil temperature.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E82 and E88 vehicles with the N51 engine produced from 4/27/2009 to 8/17/2009.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar

label for code number 552. If code number 552 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 552 has not been

punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the

response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE

Inspect and clean the ground strap contact surfaces, if necessary.

Install one end of the ground strap onto the bracket for the oil level sensor and the other end to the bracket which holds the sensor connector. Torque

both bolts to 8 Nm.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number

552. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected,

if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-366) and:

A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 552 (2) printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on

top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
