There Was Only One Thing We Didn't Like About The 2017 BMW X1

It was nearly perfect otherwise.

It’s been quite interesting to see how crossovers, both luxury and mainstream, have rapidly taken over the automotive sales landscape over the past few years. Crossovers are now more popular than sedans and families have been ditching minivans in favor of something that looks like an SUV but really isn’t. Speaking of which, when BMW launched the second generation X1 in 2015, it came with one major change compared to its predecessor: standard front-wheel-drive, which is kind of a shame.

The first generation X1 was built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, just like the larger X3 and X5, which still are today. However, BMW is in the process of moving some of its models to a new FWD unit shared with several new Minis.

The second generation X1 is one of them. Our recent time at the wheel of a 2017 X1 taught us two things: we miss standard RWD, and the new model is better than the original. We’ll explain. Not only is the X1 larger inside and out with an impressively spacious rear seat, it’s also a more refined and upscale vehicle overall. Our tester was equipped with the $2,000 xDrive AWD system, thus giving it at least a shred of off-road capability. In addition, exterior and interior styling is classier with a higher attention to detail. Bottom line: BMW did its homework and the public has spoken: "Yes to FWD fake SUVs." This Is The Next Best Thing To A BMW M4 Gran Coupe

Would you be tempted to have this over a BMW M3?

If you’re looking for a fast four-door BMW M series, both the M3 and the all-new M5 have you covered. If, however, you’re looking for a fast four-door BMW 4 Series, you may want to consider this creation by BMW Abu Dhabi which is the closest you’re likely to get to a BMW M4 Gran Coupe. Based on the 440i Gran Coupe, BMW Abu Dhabi has spiced up the 4 Series with a sporty M Performance body kit, resulting in a tempting alternative to the M3.

It’s also finished in a striking Snapper Rocks Blue, which was introduced in the facelifted BMW 4 Series range. The standard BMW 440i Gran Coupe is powered by a 3.0-liter engine that sends 320 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowing the four-door sedan to accelerate to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds. If that already sounds impressive, the M Performance Power kit, available for all versions of the 440i including the Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe, increases the power to 355 hp and 369 lb-ft torque thanks to some ECU tuning, a new intake and exhaust.

That said, BMW Abu Dhabi hasn’t specified if this 440i has been fitted with the M Performance Power kit. What is evident is a range of M Performance visual and aerodynamic add-ons. Up front, the distinctive M Performance grille is instantly recognizable in gloss black along with a carbon fiber air splitter at the bottom of the M Sport bumper. It also rides on M Performance 21 inch wheels and features various M Performance badges and side sills. There are also carbon fiber mirror covers, while the trunk sports a carbon fiber spoiler and the rear bumper is fitted with a carbon fiber diffuser to complement the Akrapovic exhaust tips.

Inside, the 440i’s interior has been upgraded with an Alcantara M Performance steering wheel, but is otherwise unchanged. No price has been given, but the 440i Gran Coupe starts at $48,300 so expect this M Performance version to cost considerably more.

The Best Thing About The 2017 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Is Its Rear End

It looks like a sedan, only with a rear hatchback.

BMW is absolutely shameless, and I mean that in a good way. It’s managed to literally create automotive segments that never before occurred to its competitors. Best example? The X6 crossover coupe. The idea was so good the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe looks nearly like a carbon copy, save for the badges. But there’s another niche that BMW recently entered, although it didn’t come up with the idea initially: the four-door coupe. First came the 6 Series Gran Coupe and, beginning for 2015, the 4 Series Gran Coupe. The worst things about it?

There’s no M version and Apple CarPlay costs an extra $300. The best thing? Like the title says, that rear hatchback. Opening it reveals a 15.7 cubic foot trunk and, with the rear seats folded flat, a total of 45.9 cubic feet of space.

Our tester is a 2017 440i, powered by the new turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive will cost you $2,000 more, but unless you live in the Snow Belt, skip it. Get the $2,550 M Sport Package instead, which tacks on the always wonderful M Adaptive Suspension, M steering wheel, sport seats, and upgraded 19-inch M Sport wheels. Although the 4 Series GC, the base 435i and its turbo 2.0-liter four begins at a reasonable $48,300, our sampler totaled $63,220. But hey, that rear hatchback. Two words: Love. It.
