Is The New BMW 8 Series Better Looking Than The Concept?

Or vice versa?

I need to clarify one thing clear before going any further: the reborn BMW 8 Series is a very pretty car. Is it stunning? I personally won’t be able to answer that until I see it in the flesh, hopefully next month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But is the production version of BMW’s new grand tourer flagship better looking than last year’s concept? Debatable. I must admit, first off, I’m not the biggest fan of modern BMW design. Great cars. Brilliantly engineered. But I’ve often found them to have a “chunky” look, for lack of a better word.

But I didn’t think “chunky” when staring at the 8 Series Concept late last year at Frankfurt. “Sleek” immediately came to mind. The concept was stunning, a perfect blend of sport and elegance. A BMW PR guy proudly explained to me the concept was the beginning of a new styling direction. Although he couldn’t comment about the production version’s specifics, we all knew it was coming. The concept, at least in my eyes, looked about 80 to 85 percent production ready, save for the usual mandated safety alterations. I was pumped. This design, with its deep concaves molded into the doors, in your-face-face large twin kidney grille, and smooth sheetmetal throughout, went above and beyond what I could have imagined.

Aside from the expected wider front and taillights, less aggressive vents at both ends, and smaller wheels and bigger side mirrors, I figured BMW really could use most of the concept’s body. Almost, but not quite is the apparent reality. Sure, my opinion may change less than a month from now, but at this moment the production-spec 8 Series looks like it’s more of an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary design, especially if you were to compare it to the outgoing 6 Series coupe. Ideally, I wanted the 8 Series to feature the concept’s smoother and better integrated side sill, a more pronounced hump over the rear wheels and that front grille. It looked absolutely killer. The production 8 Series is more of what I’m accustomed to with BMW.

It has more “chunk”, if you will, than the concept. The design works no question, but I was hoping for something that more closely resembled the concept. Just swap out the concept’s side mirrors for a useful pair and slightly tone down the front and rear vents. That’s it. That’s what I wanted. But maybe I’m entirely wrong. Maybe I’ll be eating my words. I’ll need to see the new 8 Series in person to make a final judgement. But at this time I see a missed opportunity to really push BMW design into new territory.

The 2019 BMW X6 Spied Looking A Lot Less Ugly

Or is it the other way around?

Now that the all-new, fourth generation BMW X5 has arrived, it’ll soon be time for the next X6 to debut. And, lo and behold, our spy photographers just caught an advanced prototype testing outside of BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, production facility. The third generation X6, new X5, and upcoming X7 will all be manufactured here. Sharing the X5’s CLAR architecture, the 2019 X6 will be more spacious inside for passengers and cargo alike, while its exterior will take on a more elegant appearance.

These photos clearly show a vehicle that looks a lot like a larger X4, featuring a more streamlined, less jagged look than the outgoing X6. For some, today’s X6 has a slightly awkward-looking appearance, but it seems like BMW has fixed that. The prototype you’re looking, though covered in camouflage, clearly has the X4’s general shape. We can expect to see the same engines offered in the new X5 under the hood, which includes a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque in the xDrive40i. The xDrive50i has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 465 hp and 479 lb-ft, and both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

At some point, the X5 will be offered with a diesel option, but it’s too soon to know whether that’ll carry over to the new X6 as well. The new BMW X6 will likely debut very soon, right around the time the latest X5 hits dealerships. We’ll have to wait until after the new X5 M premieres to see the next X6 M, but chances are both will be unveiled by this time next year.

New BMW X6 M Spied Looking Fast And Nimble

Apparently, it tackled the Green Hell surprisingly well for a large SUV.

In our last sighting of the new BMW X6 M, a prototype was spotted cruising roads in the Austrian Alps. This time, our spies have caught the high-performance SUV being put through its paces around the gruelling Nurburgring. While the Green Hell may not seem like a natural habitat for a large and heavy SUV, our spies were impressed with how the X6 M performed considering its size and weight. After all, even if the new X6 M is lighter than its predecessor, it’s still not exactly going to be lightweight. Despite this, there was very little body roll during testing, suggesting its lower and stiffer suspension is doing its job.

Aesthetically, the new X6 M should look a lot less ugly than the outgoing model. The prototype is still covered in a hefty amount of camouflage, but we can still see its sleek coupe-style roofline and large kidney grille inherited from newer BMW models, which arguably looks more suitable on a large SUV like the X6 M and the new X7. To distinguish it from the standard model, the X6 M gains some massive air intakes and flared wheels, resulting in a more aggressive appearance.

Under the hood, the new BMW X6 M is expected to be powered by the M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. In the M5 Competition, the engine produces 617 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, so we’re expecting the X6 M to have a similar level of power. There could even be an M Competition version if BMW’s recent comments are anything to go by. The new X6 will go on sale in 2019, so the M version probably won’t arrive until the following year.

Could An Electric Porsche 911 End Up Looking Like This?

An electrified 911 is coming, but what will it be like?

Only a handful of lucky people have been given seat time in the highly anticipated Porsche Mission E. The Mission E has been shown off numerous times in varying levels of production readiness, the most recent being the Mission E Cross Turismo. While we eagerly await the arrival of the Mission E, Porsche is also hard at work to develop plug-in versions of the upcoming 992 generation 911. An entry-level plug-in version could slot in right above the base Carrera, while a second range-topping version could be the most powerful 911 variant.

Thus far, we have only seen various spyshots of the next generation 911, which leaves a lot of speculation on what the car will ultimately look like. A rendering artist by the name of Dijan Hristov has imagined what a future hybrid or electric 911 could look like using styling cues from the Mission E. The renderings are clearly based on the current 911, so the overall shape doesn't differ too greatly from the sports car we all know and love. The headlights are clearly unique, and differ from anything we've seen on a production 911. We don't know how functional these headlights would be in the real world, but this is a rendering after all.

The rear design would also be a bit impractical, because the artist hasn't given the car a rear window. Clearly these designs are not intended to reach production, but are simply to help imagine Mission E cues on the 911. We happen to love the rear design, which shows a bit of inspiration from the Bugatti Chiron to our eyes. If this is how a future 911 hybrid looked, would you be happy?

New BMW 4 Series Unveiled: Sharper Looking And Better In The Corners

Staying ahead is the best way to avoid falling behind.

It’s a waste of time to fix something that isn’t broken. "Not broken” is a term we would use to describe the BMW 4 Series, which, as the automaker points out, has sold more than 400,000 units worldwide since its inception in 2013 through the end of 2016. That being said, in the auto industry it’s not always a bad idea to freshen up while ahead. For BMW this is an especially good idea given that Mercedes turned the C-Class Coupe into a budget version of the S-Class Coupe. In an effort to stay ahead of the pack BMW has just unveiled the new 4 Series.

To keep things consistent throughout the model lineup (coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe, aka the 3 Series you have always wanted) the changes are subtle. Yet they have the cumulative effect of keeping the 4 Series from slipping behind in its hotly contested segment. Restyled LED lights take center stage up front and at the rear, replacing the xenon headlights on the outgoing model. Along with the now-standard LED fog lamps, restyled air intakes as well as a rear apron help the 4 Series look competitive. Inside the changes are just as understated. Chrome accents can be found in new locations and are paired with electroplated detailing and stitching on the instrument panel, which can be combined with three new upholstery colors and trim choices.

Finishing off the eye-pleasers are two new paint finishes, Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange, as well as model-specific wheel designs for the Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport packages. Hardware doesn’t go untouched either with the 4 Series gaining a reworked suspension for the Coupe and Gran Coupe models that rides more firmly and transmits road information to the driver more effectively. For those wanting to carve the canyons sport tires can be added in the factory if optioned. In the never-ending quest to make infotainment systems less annoying, BMW fitted its newest iteration of its optional user inference with new tile-style control pads that can be rearranged.

The picture under the hood doesn't change significantly, with the 4 Series gaining BMW's range of EfficientDynamics engines. Included in this family are three turbocharged gasoline engines (a 181-horsepower unit for the four-cylinder 420i, a 248-horsepower mil for the 430i four-banger, and a 3.0-liter power plant making 321 horsepower in the six-cylinder 440i). There are three turbo diesels ranging from 148 horsepower to 309 horsepower, but there's next to no chance we'll see those in the US. These engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to either the rear wheels or all four wheels if xDrive is spec'd.

Prospective M4 buyers can expect to see the same LED light treatment and cabin upgrades make it to the coupe and convertible Ms, although power output on the M model remains the same despite the fact that the Mercedes-AMG C63 S makes a substantial amount of extra power. Don’t expect the upgrades to come for free as Autocar claims that UK buyers are being asked to pony up an extra £680 ($818) for the upgraded 4 Series.

New BMW 4 Series Convertible Spied Looking Stylish With Soft Top Roof

Like the new Z4, the next-gen BMW 4 Series Convertible will ditch the current model’s folding hard top.

BMW recently updated the 4 Series coupe and convertible for the 2018 model year with new standard LED headlights and reshaped bumpers to freshen up the styling as well as improved handling thanks to stiffer suspension. A next-generation model is just around the corner, and our spies have sent us the first images of the all-new BMW 4 Series Convertible loaded on a transport truck.

BMW seems to be going back to its roots, as the new 4 Series Convertible prototype has ditched the current model’s arduous folding hard top roof for a more stylish soft top just like the new Z4. As well as improving the looks, the soft top will make the new BMW 4 Series lighter and cheaper to produce, while offering more luggage space when the roof is open.

The prototype is extensively covered in camouflage preventing us from getting a closer look at the details, but the grille appears to have the same shape and size as the one found on the new Z4. We wouldn’t be surprised if the front and rear fascias share styling cues with the reborn 8 Series.

The new 4 Series Convertible will be based on BMW’s CLAR platform, which should result in a significant weight reduction, a more spacious cabin, and a bigger trunk. As for powertrains, BMW is likely to continue selling the 4 Series with a choice of four and six-cylinder engines in the US.

The current model is available with either a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that produces 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder with 320 hp and 330 lb-ft. Both the next-gen 4 Series Coupe and Cabrio are expected to go on sale in 2020.
