There Was Only One Thing We Didn't Like About The 2017 BMW X1

It was nearly perfect otherwise.

It’s been quite interesting to see how crossovers, both luxury and mainstream, have rapidly taken over the automotive sales landscape over the past few years. Crossovers are now more popular than sedans and families have been ditching minivans in favor of something that looks like an SUV but really isn’t. Speaking of which, when BMW launched the second generation X1 in 2015, it came with one major change compared to its predecessor: standard front-wheel-drive, which is kind of a shame.

The first generation X1 was built on a rear-wheel-drive platform, just like the larger X3 and X5, which still are today. However, BMW is in the process of moving some of its models to a new FWD unit shared with several new Minis.

The second generation X1 is one of them. Our recent time at the wheel of a 2017 X1 taught us two things: we miss standard RWD, and the new model is better than the original. We’ll explain. Not only is the X1 larger inside and out with an impressively spacious rear seat, it’s also a more refined and upscale vehicle overall. Our tester was equipped with the $2,000 xDrive AWD system, thus giving it at least a shred of off-road capability. In addition, exterior and interior styling is classier with a higher attention to detail. Bottom line: BMW did its homework and the public has spoken: "Yes to FWD fake SUVs." Special thanks to Niello BMW-Sacramento for letting us film the car.

There Could Be A Second-Generation BMW i8 After All

Question is, should it go fully electric?

Only a few days ago we learned BMW may not launch a second-generation i3 and i8, mainly because of the upcoming i4 and iNext EVs, slated for 2020 and 2021, respectively. However, that news may have been slightly premature. According to BMW Blog, Munich-based management has not ruled out an i8 successor, meaning a second-gen is currently being studied. A new i3 is still not in the cards. The i8 is a hybrid high-performance sports car and, apparently, BMW is not sure whether to continue with this setup or to make it fully electric.

It shouldn’t be ruled out that the i8 could become an all-electric supercar, which is something we’re not at all against. The i8, launched in 2014, was and remains a revolutionary car for the German automaker, with advanced technologies inside and out as well as a futuristic design. Not everyone likes its looks, but there’s no questioning the i8 put BMW in a better position in terms of displaying the automaker’s capabilities. Think of the current i8 as a blue print of sorts as to how the sports car of the future can survive thanks to hybrid and plug-in hybrid tech. Even today, the i8 turns heads wherever it goes and its powertrain is still considered, more or less, state-of-the-art. Of course, the i8 is beginning to lose its edge somewhat due to new rivals.

Even the just revealed Rimac C_Two is something we’re sure BMW is closely examining. A second-generation i8 would also, theoretically, fit in well with BMW’s planned 25 electric car strategy that will soon get underway. Considering the i8 has already made a name for itself, less so the i3, it’d make sense for BMW to retain the car as a technological and high performance flagship coupe and now roadster. By going all-electric, it would not infringe upon the 8 Series’ territory and can further help BMW push boundaries. It all sounds pretty good, right? Indeed, so when (or if) will an all-new i8 arrive? For sure it won’t be before 2020. The following year is devoted, in part, to the iNext, so figure around 2022 or 2023 at the earliest.

There Can Only Be One Top Gear Performance Car Of The Year

Chris Harris will be more than happy to find a winner.

Every year Top Gear has its Speed Week competition, with the goal of determining the Performance Car of the Year. It’s a hard job and all, but Chris Harris is more than up for the task. We all wish we could join him. Let’s just say that 2017 was an absolutely brilliant year for performance car reveals, putting it mildly. Why’s that? Here’s your answer: Ford GT, Lamborghini Huracan Performante, McLaren 720S, and a new Porsche 911 GT3 and its most serious rival ever, the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

Oh, and let’s not forget the less expensive, but certainly no lightweight Honda Civic Type R. There’s also the first-ever Mercedes-AMG E63 with all-wheel drive, the not for the faint hearted BMW M4 CS, the stunningly styled Lexus LC500, and the 602 hp Audi R8 Plus Spyder.

Yeah, quite a list of competitors indeed. Fortunately, we can all follow Harris, who did the testing at the Knockhill circuit in Scottland in his quest to determine a winner beginning today and ending on November 1st. This is going to be one hell of a competition and a wonderful amount of sheer car porn. In the meantime, let us know your predictions. Which car do you think will take home the ultimate prize?

If You Can't Afford a BMW 1 Series M, There Is A Much Cheaper Alternative

Everyone loves the 1 Series M, but prices are out of control.

Here's an unpopular opinion: the BMW 1 Series M is overhyped. Before BMW enthusiasts hunt me down for my blasphemous statement, I should explain. The BMW 1 Series M is one of the most publicly praised M cars in recent history. Upon announcing the car, there was a public outcry for BMW to build more. Only 2,500 units were originally planned, but BMW ended up building 6,309 (some of which have been crashed). Almost overnight, the 1 Series M became more of a collector's item than an actual car.

When it was new back in 2011, the base MSRP of the 1 Series M was $47,010. A normal car would have depreciated by at least half of its value seven years later in 2018, but the 1 Series M is not a normal car. Instead, the lowest list price we found for a 1 Series M was a shade under $60,000. Not only has the car held its value, it's actually gone up. So what do you get for your $60,000 today? The 1 Series M was noted to be one of the most driver-focused M cars in quite some time. The car is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo N54 inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque going out to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

The car also has a overboost function, increasing peak torque to 369 lb-ft. It is at this point we'd like to point out the 1M is not all that fast of a car. It's quick, but not blistering. 0-60 mph takes 4.5 seconds and the quarter-mile is dispensed in 13 seconds flat. A brand-new M240i can match these numbers at a base price of $45,445 while offering better interior technology. It's amazing to think that a brand-new M240i is actually cheaper than the older 1 Series M, but it is not the "much cheaper alternative" we mentioned in the title. That honor goes to the 135is, which can now be purchased for around half of the 1M's original asking price.

We ran a search for used 135is examples, and we found results starting at around $20,000. This means a 135is is currently around one third the price of the 1M. So what do you get for your $20,000? Unfortunately, the 135is is not as powerful as its big brother with "only" 320 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. For one third the price as the 1M, 15 hp doesn't really seem like a huge loss. The small power dip causes the 135is to be slightly slower than the 1M with a 0-60 mph time at 4.6 seconds and 13.3 seconds in the quarter-mile. $40,000 seem like a lot of money to save in order to sacrifice fractions of a second in sprint times.

Even though the 135is is down on power compared to the 1M, it actually has a newer engine. The 1M uses an older N54 twin-turbo engine, whereas the 135is uses the newer twin-scroll turbo N55. Most buyers are going to want to tune these engines, so the power difference is highly insignificant. There are other elements which differentiate the 1M from other 1 Series models. The wider stance of the 1M is very iconic, but we aren't sure it's worth paying triple the price. The 135is was only sold for a single year (2013) in North America. Buyers could choose from a coupe or convertible with either a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed DCT.

The 1M may have been rare, but the 135is may actually be even rarer. BMW only built 816 units in the US (586 coupe and 213 convertibles). Even if Canada received a similar number of cars, the 135is would still be more than three times as rare as the 1M. If it was our money, the decision would be easy. Why buy the car everyone is hyping, when for one third of the price you could have something nearly as special?

Will There Be Something To Rival The Volkswagen T-Roc R In America?

BMW? Volvo? Here’s your opportunity.

Think of the Volkswagen Golf. Great car. Think of the Golf R. Awesome hot hatch. Now imagine what the Golf R would look and possibly drive like as a compact crossover? The VW T-Roc R is likely that very vehicle. As we already know, the T-Roc is not sold in the US and more than likely never will be. That’s kind of a shame because we’ve seen the T-Roc in the flesh at European car shows and it’s a great-looking vehicle. It’s even built on the same MQB platform as the current and next Golf. But for whatever reason(s), VW has opted to keep the T-Roc and the upcoming performance version from reaching America’s shores.

Our spy photographers recently snapped several images of what’s clearly a nearly ready to go T-Roc R prototype getting some exercise at the Nurburgring.

This hot compact crossover is expected to come powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with just over 300 hp. The Golf R, by comparison, has 292 hp. We also figure the T-Roc’s power will be distributed to all four wheels through a dual-clutch transmission. Sounds pretty good, right? Too bad we can’t have one, but there are some alluring potential alternatives.

Just off the top of our heads, there’s the BMW X1, specifically the X1 M Sport. Any BMW dealership in the US will be more than happy to sell you one. It also features a turbocharged 2.0-liter turbo four, though it produces 228 hp. It’s also pretty expensive, ringing up at least $40,000. Not in the market for something German?

There’s also the Volvo XC40. Like the VW and BMW, it’s also powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four, though output is rated 248 hp. If BMW and Volvo were to offer an X1 M and XC40 with Polestar assistance, then there’d be little craving for the T-Roc R. The downside, of course, would be the premium price tags. We honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the hot compact crossover segment became a thing in the near future, given the already massive popularity of crossovers in general in both America and Europe.

Will There Be A BMW Z4 M? Here’s Your Answer

An interview with the M division boss should clarify things.

In less than one month, BMW will reveal its next-generation Z4 roadster at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Monterey, California. In fact, the German automaker has just released a new teaser image of the car’s front grille to add some further media hype. We’re hyped, needless to say. The new Z4 is built on that same BMW-Toyota jointly developed sports car platform that’ll also underpin the new Supra. However, the Supra will very likely remain a coupe only while the Z4 will sport the drop top. But what about a potential Z4 M?

This has topic has rarely been discussed, until now. Car and Driver chatted with BMW M boss Frank Van Meel recently and without directly saying “no”, van Meel more or less poured cold water on a future M version. “Let me put it this way: I think the M40i is the perfect positioning regarding performance of that car,” he said. “It’s quite close to the M2, so we’re really happy with the overall concept of that car being an M40i. If you would go any higher, it would be very, very narrow in customer groups.” Basically, BMW doesn’t see the business case for a Z4 M, namely because the convertible/roadster market is already niche enough as is.

The first generation Z4 sported a full-on M version sold as both a coupe and roadster. A total of only a little over 5,000 M roadsters and 4,200 M coupes were built worldwide before production ended in 2008. The recently discontinued second-generation Z4 never had an M variant. The Z4’s Z3 predecessor, however, had both an M coupe and roadster, the former being particularly rare. Regarding the upcoming all-new Z4, specifically the M40i referred to by van Meel, reports indicate it’ll be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder. Exact output and other specs are coming soon, but we highly doubt it’ll be underpowered.

There Will Never Be A V6-Powered Audi R8

The Audi R8 will have a naturally aspirated V10 for as long as it lives.

For years, rumors have suggested the Audi R8 line-up will be expanded with an entry-level model incorporating the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine from the Porsche Panamera to replace the old V8 model. It all started when a leaked production schedule suggested a V6-powered model will be revealed this year in time for the arrival of the facelifted 2019 Audi R8.

At one point, it looked like the R8 V6 had been cancelled, then another report emerged claiming the more affordable R8 will go on sale later this year. However, the 2019 Audi R8 facelift was revealed a few weeks ago without a V6 option. Will there be a V6-powered Audi R8 or not, then? We now know the answer.

Speaking to Car Throttle at a launch event for the refreshed R8, the car’s project manager Bjorn Friedrich has cleared up the confusion by confirming that a V6 variant won't be happening during the current generation of the R8.

That means Audi's naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 will be the only powertrain available until the end of the current model’s lifecycle. “It’s the best engine for the car…We’ll stick to the V10,” he said. Friedrich also didn’t rule out the possibility of a new rear-wheel drive RWS, but couldn't confirm it either.

It remains to be seen if there will be a third-generation R8, but the future isn’t looking bright for Audi's mid-engined supercar. Audi currently has no plans to renew the R8, but it could still be revived in the future as a fully electric supercar inspired by the PB18 concept. Still, it seems fitting that the current R8 will bow out with its highly revered V10 powerplant.
