SITUATION



The battery charger is connected directly to the battery. If the battery is connected directly to the battery, the IBS senses current being drawn by the



vehicle electrical system, but with a battery voltage that remains constant. This causes faults to be set.



INFORMATION



When using the battery charger on a vehicle with an IBS, the battery charger must be connected to the battery terminal under the hood.

SITUATION



During prolonged warm-up, when ambient temperatures is below -10 C and full heat or defrost is selected, engine temperature gauge goes to red.



Engine does not overheat. Possible additional faults: EGS 148 (94) CAN Engine Temp.



CAUSE



Possible software calibration in DME.



PROCEDURE



The improved DME software was introduced since DIS CD V32 with update 1.



On a customer complaint basis, reprogram DME with the current version of Progman. Do not replace thermostat or other components.

Fuel door lock actuator, or wiring fault



PROCEDURE



Check the wiring from fuse 53 to the lock actuator. If no faults are found, replace the fuel door lock actuator.

Battery - Discharges With Key Left In Ignition Switch

Battery Discharge with Key Inserted in Ignition Lock



MODEL



E36 (3 Series), E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E52 (Z8), E53 (X5), E83 (X3), E85 (Z4) with electronic immobilizer 3 (EWS 3)



SITUATION



There is a possibility of the battery eventually discharging if the driver leaves the vehicle parked up for a long period without removing the key from



the ignition lock completely.



CAUSE



If the key is not removed from the ignition lock completely (semi-removed status), there is a critical distance between the key and the ring antenna



where the EWS will detect statuses permanently changing between "key inserted" and "key removed". This will result in a permanent closed circuit



current of approximately 800 mA.



PROCEDURES



In the event of a complaint, explain to customer that he should either leave the key fully in the ignition lock, or remove the key from the ignition lock



completely.



Parts replacement does not provide a remedy.

Vehicle Battery Charging Voltage Change

INFORMATION



To improve the quality of battery charging on BMW vehicles, the charging voltage on approved BMW chargers has been increased to 14.8 volts.



This means that the Deutronic DBL430 battery charger must have its charging voltage changed to 14.8 volts. If the menu choice "Factory



Settings" is selected at any time, the factory default of 14.4 volts is set. In this case, the procedure that follows must be performed again.



PROCEDURE



Follow the following procedure to set the Deutronic DBL430 charging voltage to 14.8 volts. The battery charge must not be connected to a vehicle



when performing this procedure. Only connect the 110 volt (AC) line to a suitable outlet.



1. Remove the 12 volt DC cables from a battery/vehicle if so connected



2. Plug the 110 volt line to suitable outlet



3. Switch the charger on using the main power switch on the front. The message "Battery Error" is displayed.

4. Press and hold the 2 arrow buttons (< >) for at least 3 seconds.



5. Release the buttons, the Language display screen appears.



6. Use the arrow buttons (<>) to put the parentheses around "(Eng)".



7. Press the ""menu" button ~2 times to display the "Charge Config" Menu.



8. Select this menu with the right arrow button (>).



9. Change the charging voltage using the arrow buttons. The voltage must be changed to 14.8 volts.



10. Confirm the new setting with the "Enter" button.



11. Confirm the "Save Value" question with the left arrow (<) button.

12. Confirm save (again) with the left arrow (<).



13. Turn charger off using the main power switch.



14. The charger may be used at this time. This procedure need only to be performed one time unless the "Factory Settings" option is restored.

SITUATION



Moisture that condenses on the evaporator can provide an environment favorable to microorganisms. Mold, fungi, bacteria, and mildew may grow as



a result of contamination from the outside air and cause a musty odor, particularly when air conditioner is first switched ON.



CORRECTION



On a customer complaint basis, clean evaporator with disinfectant using special application tool90 88 6 641 450 (obtained through the Automatic



Tool Shipment Program).



As a disinfectant that can be used to treat A/C systems, BMW recommends "Professional LYSOL Brand No-Rinse Sanitizer" manufactured by



Reckitt Benckiser Inc. (1655 Valley Road, Wayne, NJ 07474). "LYSOL No -Rinse Sanitizer" is available as a100% concentrated solution in



one-gallon containers through professional cleaning supplies stores.



To perform an evaporator cleaning, a solution with 5% concentration is sufficient (for 1 liter of disinfectant mix 50 ml of concentrated LYSOL with



950 ml of clean water).



IMPORTANT:



Complaints of this nature are not caused by defects of material or workmanship, but rather by the environmental conditions in which the vehicle is



operated. Consequently, there is no warranty reimbursement for labor or materials associated with disinfection of the evaporator.



PROCEDURE



Warning:



When handling cleaning agent, observe following protection measures:



- Wear protective rubber gloves and protective goggles.



- If cleaning agent comes in contact with eyes or skin, wash immediately with lots of water.



Important:



To protect interior of the vehicle:



- Close all air vents,



- Cover carpet in the work area.



- Make sure that A/C condensation drains are not being clogged, so the cleaning agent can escape freely through drain openings in the



transmission tunnel.

Cannot find wiring/connector for the rear interior sensor when installing alarm system (DWA)



CAUSE



Wiring harness manufacturing fault



PROCEDURE



If harness connector for the rear interior sensor cannot be located, check pin 19 X254 at the General Module (A1). If there is no wire at pin 19, make



a supplementary harness for the rear interior sensor (A123) as follows:



Run wire from GM X254 pin 19 to new rear interior sensor 4-pin connector X1644 pin3. Run wires from pins 1, 2 and 4 of X1644 and, using Quick



Connects splice into pins 1, 2 and 4 of the front interior sensor (A121) harness at X1582.

SITUATION



Blower control malfunctions. The fault symptoms indicate a faulty blower output stage.

CAUSE



1. The fault occurs immediately one the air-conditioning control panel is replaced:



Disconnecting the 18-pin connector from the air conditioning control panel during the run-on phase (within 15 minutes of the engine being



switched off or terminal 15 being deactivated) produces a voltage peak in the blower output stage that causes the blower to fail temporarily.



2. Blower output stage faulty



PROCEDURE



Concerning Cause 1:



It is not necessary to replace the blower output stage. It is possible to reactivate the blower output stage by resetting the blower (pulling fuse 50).



Always disconnect terminal 30 before replacing the air-conditioning/automatic air-conditioning control panel. This will prevent voltage peaks in the



blower output stage when the control panel is disconnected.



Concerning Cause 2:



Replace the blower output stage with the current component specified in the EPC.



Caution: It is NO LONGER permitted to fit the component with part number 64 11 6 923 204 to the E46 and E83
