This 750-HP BMW X5 M Wants To Battle The Lamborghini Urus

German tuner G-Power will upgrade your BMW X5 M into a Lamborghini Urus fighter.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Lamborghini Urus becoming the world’s first Super SUV. Thanks to its Audi-sourced 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 producing 650 hp, the Urus is officially the fastest production SUV ever made with a 0-62 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph. There are other alternatives in the aftermarket tuning world, however. If you’re looking to modify the already potent BMW X5 M, there are plenty of options available.

Since it first launched in 2014, the high-performance SUV is starting to get outclassed by the competition, so German tuner G-Power has updated it with new tuning packages offering a range of power enhancements. Powered by a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8, a stock BMW X5 M delivers an impressive 575 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque allowing it to do 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. Opting for G-Power’s Stage 1 kit raises the X5 M’s output to 650 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque to match the Lamborghini Urus by using either the tuner’s Bi-Tronik 2 V1 engine software optimization or an external Bi-Tronik 5 V1 power module.

The stage two upgrade boosts the twin-turbo V8’s power to 700 hp and 667 lb-ft of torque. To achieve this, G-Power installs a new set of downpipes next to one of the two electronic power enhancements to reduce the back pressure in the exhaust system. If you want the best possible performance, the highest configuration stage transforms the BMW X5 M into a mighty 750-hp monster with 722 lb-ft of torque. This configuration adds a new G-Power titanium exhaust system with four 100-mm carbon tailpipes, delivering a 23-kg weight advantage over the SUV’s standard exhaust system. The turbocharger has also been tweaked to round off the hardware modifications.

In addition, G-Power offers a widebody kit that gives the X5 M a more muscular look thanks to new fenders, front and rear spoilers, and a carbon Venturi hood for extroverted drivers. G-Power hasn't detailed how these modifications affect the performance, so we’d love to see this modified BMW X5 M battle it out with the Lamborghini Urus.

Dealer Wants $1.5 Million For Tupac's 1996 BMW 7 Series

Car's celebrity connection doesn't come cheap.

The definition of what something is worth is generally agreed to be the point where the asking price and what someone is willing to pay for it intersect. A rather obvious observation but one that has particular relevance in the case of this 1996 BMW 750Li.

In the automotive world, rarity, history and celebrity links can all have a positive effect on a vehicle’s value, this one ticks most of those boxes but not in the usual way. You see this is the car that hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur was killed in back in September 1996, which is why Celebrity Cars Las Vegas is currently asking a very healthy $1.5 million for it.

The gruesome drive-by shooting of Tupac in Las Vegas shook the world all those years ago and it may seem a bit grim to try and profit from the event, the pricey Bimmer has been on sale at Celebrity Cars since the fall of 2017 so perhaps other people feel the same way about it. The car itself was acquired by Ryan Hamilton, the owner of Celebrity Cars, back in 2017 from an unnamed owner. When the car first came on sale there was some confusion as to who was actually selling it. The memorabilia business Moments In Time also had the car listed despite not actually having the car.

All of that has since been resolved and the 7 Series has at that point been fully restored so the bullet holes and any other damage are no longer visible, it does however come with papers to validate its history. In this case, though, the restoration may have actually decreased its value, some images from the dealer do seem to show where the damage original occurred but this is not mentioned in the sales info.

Seeing as the car was practically new at the time of the shooting it may seem somewhat surprising to note that it has over 120,000 miles on the clock, clearly the previous owner did not want that velvety-smooth V12 to go to waste.

Whether someone does eventually decide to offer the full asking price for the car is uncertain, this 7 Series is not competing with exotic supercars or iconic classics but rather other one-off celebrity memorabilia like the first bat Babe Ruth ever hit a home run with. That piece of history may have sold for a bit less at $1.25-million, but it didn’t come with electric seats, chrome rims or extra rear legroom. The choice is yours.

Italian Coachbuilder Wants $500,000 To Turn Bentley Mulsanne Into Stunning Coupe

Ares Design has built a work of art.

It's been seven years since Bentley stopped building the Brooklands, a two-door luxury coupe based on the Bentley Azure convertible, itself based on the Arnage sedan. Few people remember the Brooklands, as Bentley built just 550 units in four years. Bentley has never built a coupe version of its current large sedan, the Mulsanne, so a few aftermarket companies have had to take up the slack.

Bentley has built a convertible version of the Mulsanne for 19 lucky customers, so technically a coupe wouldn't be completely off the table. In the meantime, Italian coachbuilder called Ares Design has just shown off its take on a Mulsanne Coupe at the Monterey Car Week with an US-bound model built for a private client.

Right away, we are blown away by the craftsmanship shown here - the Mulsanne Coupe really looks like something that would roll off the factory floor at Bentley. This private customer opted for an elegant two-tone paint job, which is unquestionably eye-catching. Ares Design says that the car will be "built in extremely limited numbers for customers who appreciate Bentley style but would like a bespoke handcrafted creation." In other words, you can't afford it so keep dreaming.

Transforming a Bentley sedan into a coupe isn't easy and it certainly isn't cheap. To perform the conversion, Ares performed a full three-dimensional scan of the four-door Mulsanne and used the data to complete the necessary CAD work. The company then had to create new aluminum rear quarter panels, extended front doors made of carbon fiber, and bespoke windows with custom chrome surrounds. On the interior, the trim has been meticulously crafted so it looks like it comes straight from Bentley.

With all of these custom touches, the Ares Design Mulsanne Coupe does more than just chop off two doors. The extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber shaves 992 pounds from the overall weight and a new ECU allows the 6.75-liter twin-turbo V8 to produce more than 591 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque. Of course, all of this work doesn't come cheap. Ares says the conversion takes around three to four months and starts around $460,000 (not including the cost of the Muslanne itself). It may not be cheap, but boy do we want it.

Audi Wants An A3 Coupe To Rival The Mercedes CLA

And could end up looking pretty spectacular.

We love the Audi A3 family, even though the US lineup isn't quite as extensive as to what Europe receives. Audi recently refreshed the A3 and S3 for 2017, but there could be even bigger changes in the form of a new body style. According Auto Express, the hatchback, sportback, sedan and convertible could be joined by a new four-door coupe model. This would make the A3 a more direct competitor for the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Four-door coupes are all the rage right now, and it seems like the German automakers are all clamoring to build more of them.

Audi's goal is to shift its compact models into the executive class, which is where the A4 currently competes, without a drastic price hike. This strategy has worked well for Mercedes with niche models like the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake, which unfortunately is not sold in the US. Audi is hoping to catch up to Mercedes, which just had its best sales year ever, becoming the best-selling luxury automaker in 2016. Introducing a new A3 variant would also help Audi achieve its goal of having 60 individual models by 2020. So what could this new A3 Coupe look like? The new car will retain the look of the A3 up front, but with a bolder design, new grill, LEDs, bumpers, and a wider stance.

The design could resemble the TT Sportback Concept, which was one of our favorite recent Audi concept cars. Before the new four-door coupe model arrives, the new hatchback will be revealed in 2019. The new A3 will still be based on the MQB platform, but it will grow slightly to have more interior space. It will also borrow some advanced technology from the upcoming A8. The virtual cockpit will be updated and self-driving should be prominent in some capacity. The A3 will likely have a variant with some form of electrification as Audi attempts to move away from Dieselgate. Based on the rumors, the new A3 should be even better than the current model, which should make it a great car.

Outstanding Sports Cars Nobody Wants To Buy

We checked the sales numbers for some of today's greatest coupes and convertibles, then compared them to crossovers from the same brands. The results are interesting.

Most people love sports cars. They love reading about them. They love dreaming of owning one. Unfortunately, sports car ownership often exists more in our dreams than in reality. Ask any automaker which segment brings in the least money and their answers are universal: coupes and convertibles. In other words, sports cars. It’s a shame, really, because sports cars capture the soul of driving, at least on pavement. Although many executives are true driving enthusiasts, it can be a challenge to green light a vehicle they know won’t sell in high numbers.

Compared to crossovers, for example, sports cars – any sports car – sell for barely a fraction of what those family haulers do in a month or year. Fortunately, some automakers are sticking with their respective coupes and convertibles often because they represent the “soul of the brand,” or something like that. So we picked out nine of the most popular (in our heads) sports cars on sale today and compared their sales figures with those of a more mainstream model from the same brand. The numbers are depressing, so be warned.

Alfa Romeo 4C

The Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe and Spider were instant classics the moment they arrived. The coupe came first, in 2014, followed by the Spider a year later. They represented a revival of the iconic brand for the North American market, despite the fact Alfa Romeo has always been sold in Europe. But if it wanted to survive, North America was vital and the 4C was a brilliant comeback. With its turbocharged straight-four producing 237 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and paired to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 4C is loved for its lightweight and superb driving feel.

Unfortunately, its sales are dwindling, despite being a limited production model from the get-go. Last year, only 406 examples (Coupe and Spider) were sold in the US, down from 492 units in 2016 and 663 in 2015. So far this year, just 183 have left dealership lots.

To compare, the Stelvio SUV, in its first full model year, sold 2,721 examples in 2017 and is projected to do even better by the end of 2018.

BMW 2 Series

If you’re a true BMW fan, then the 2 Series is your car. It is the modern-day descendant of icons such as the 2002 and the E30 3 Series. And yes, you can spend big and go for the hardcore M2 and M2 Competition. But if you don’t have that kind of cash, then lower trim 2 Series coupes and convertibles will suit you just fine. The current F22 generation launched for 2014 and we’ve been fans of it ever since. Rear-wheel-drive, six-speed manual, turbocharged inline engine. It’s a simple and to-the-point setup. Sadly, that doesn’t appeal to a majority of BMW buyers.

While annual sales have typically increased since its first model year, 2017’s combined coupe and convertible count came to 29,922 units. Sounds pretty good, right? In the same year, the X5 SUV sold nearly 52,000 examples, and that’s actually a little low compared to 2015 (55,000). Now you see why BMW has a complete lineup of SUVs.

Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F-Type comes from greatness. As the spiritual successor to the iconic E-Type, the F-Type represents everything a modern Jaguar ought to be: fast, sexy, brilliant to drive, and capable of wonderful engine noise. Unfortunately, those traits aren’t good enough to carry the brand. No, Jaguar needs more mainstream models in order to make a buck. But what’s changing these days is that instead of relying on sedans like the XE for a steady profit, Jaguar has shifted focus to SUVs like the F-Pace. The sales figures speak for themselves.

Last year, Jaguar sold nearly 19,000 F-Pace SUVs, up from 10,000 in 2016. The F-Type? Just 4,108 (coupe and convertible combined) were sold in 2017. Is that enough to justify its existence? Apparently so because Jaguar is already working on its successor, so that’s something. Meanwhile, the E-Pace and all-new I-Pace will help bring in the big bucks. Even a three-row J-Pace is rumored.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the best-selling sports car of all time. The rear-wheel-drive, lightweight roadster burst on to the scene in 1989 and since then Mazda has produced over 1 million of them. Impressive. Or is it? Let’s compare it to the also very well-regarded Mazda CX-5.

In 2017, over 127,000 new CX-5 crossovers left dealership lots. That same year just over 11,000 MX-5 Miatas were sold. US sales of the MX-5 seem to fluctuate yearly but aren’t anywhere near what they were in the roadster’s early years. In its first model year, for example, 23,000 units were sold. That increased to nearly 36,000 in 1990, an all-time high. It's a steady decline from there. Meanwhile, annual CX-5 sales numbers are only increasing.

Mercedes-AMG GT

Let’s be honest with this one: the Mercedes-AMG GT was never intended to be a big money maker. It is a demonstration of what the German automaker and its high-performance division are capable of doing. Yes, a halo car. However, halo cars are never built in high numbers despite their impressive performance credentials. The AMG GT is no different. A total of 1,609 examples were sold in the US in 2017 and it looks like it’ll be around the same by the time 2018 comes to a close. Those numbers are peanuts compared to the Mercedes GLC SUV crossover.

In 2017 alone, Americans bought over 48,600 GLCs and already we can confirm that figure will be higher this year. Again, we’re not directly comparing these vehicles stats wise because they couldn’t be any more different, other than sharing that Silver Star emblem. But it just goes to show how little automakers rely on halo models to make a buck.

Nissan 370Z and GT-R

There’s no question Nissan knows how to build great sports cars. The 370Z coupe and roadster and GT-R have rightly earned their solid reputations, especially the latter, despite not being ideal daily drivers. However, a majority of car buyers and Nissan customers have zero interest in owning any of them. A total of 4,600 or so 370Z coupes and convertibles were sold in 2017, down from nearly 6,000 in 2016 and 7,400 in 2015. The GT-R? Try not to laugh (or cry): only 578 examples sold in 2017. In fact, Nissan has sold a combined total of 11,676 GT-Rs since it launched for 2008.

Now comes the crossover comparison: Last year alone in the US, 403,465 Rogues were sold, which was an all-time high for the model.

Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman

Tell any Porsche 911 fan that the 718 Boxster and Cayman twins have the better engine setup (mid- vs. rear-engine) and you’re likely to begin a debate that will never end. While mid-engine sports cars have long been hailed for their ideal weight balance, they’re still sports cars at the end of the day in the eyes of the bean counters. The sales numbers do all of the talking. A total of 5,087 718 Boxsters and Caymans (2,287 and 2,800 units, respectively) were sold in 2017. The accountants are probably not impressed, especially when sales of the Macan are taken into account.

Last year, almost 21,500 Macans left US dealer lots, and the same, if not more, are expected to be sold this year. It’s how the auto industry works these days.

Subaru BRZ

Once again, prepare yourselves for another episode of ‘How the Hell Can Sports Cars Be Justified!?’ with the Subaru BRZ and Forester. Needless to say, the BRZ is the only Subaru in the lineup not to have all-wheel drive, but the typical Subaru customer doesn’t care because they’re not in the market for a sports coupe in the first place. No, they want an SUV like the Forester. A total of 177,563 Foresters sold in 2017, slightly down from 178,593 in 2016.

The BRZ? Merely 4,131 sold in 2017 and 4,141 in 2016. Its best year was 2013 with 8,587 units sold. Was the RWD experiment worth it for Subaru? Subaru’s finance department probably doesn’t think so.

Hyundai Wants To Copy BMW With High-Performance SUVs

First step already done: hire away BMW M's VP of engineering.

Hyundai is dead set on its upcoming N performance brand, as we’ve just been reminded of regarding the upcoming Ford Focus ST and VW Golf GTI rivaling i30 N hot hatch. Led by former BMW M boss, Albert Biermann, plans for the N division are vast and, according to Australia’s Drive, include plans for an eventual performance version of the Tucson SUV crossover. "Right now there are no limitations," Biermann stated during a recent i30N prototype pre-drive event Down Under.

“We started with the C segment and the Fastback will follow and we are already working on some other concepts for the B segment (Accent) and SUV also. Right now we are open.” That SUV he’s referring to is the Tucson. “If you look at the Tucson today it is very relaxed, very comfortable to drive, but to have an N version requires lots of power, nice transmission, nice handling, sportier tires and lowered body,” Biermann said. “We have a good platform with the Tucson to make a high-performance SUV.” Biermann is the right man to make this happen, taking into account his three decades of experience at BMW, where he also led the development of its high-performance SUVs, such as the X5 M.

He’s now been tasked by Hyundai to do the same for its lineup, and after we met Biermann ourselves at Detroit last January and witnessed first-hand his enthusiasm, it’s clear he’ll deliver the goods. Now that he’s wrapped up work on the new Kia Stinger, Biermann’s full focus is on the growing N division, and after the i30 hot hatch arrives, don’t be surprised to see an N-badged Tucson caught testing on the Nurburgring.

BMW X7 Design Patents Find Way Their Online Before BMW Wants Us To See Them

We'll see the real deal in the flesh in only a few months' time.

It’s no secret BMW will soon launch its first ever X7 large SUV. Last September we a concept version of the three-row SUV which, in our opinion, was around 80 percent production ready, design wise. BMW has also teased several in-house spy photos of pre-production X7s on the assembly line at the Spartanburg, South Carolina production facility. Chances are, a full reveal will happen as early as this fall, our best guess being the LA Auto Show in November. After all, it’s the US that’s craving three-row SUVs more than just about any other country. Today we have for you leaked images of the X7’s final design.

These patent images, courtesy of Bimmer Post and Motor1, are definitely the real deal. The overall design language matches perfectly with the rest of BMW’s existing lineup, specifically the also all-new X5. To further prove this, we’ve added X5 photos for your comparison pleasure. Built on BMW’s modular CLAR platform, which also underpins the X5, the X7 will be going directly up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover. Under its hood will be a range of engines, including six- and eight-cylinders as well as a plug-in hybrid, though sources indicate the latter won’t be available at launch.

Another rumor claims a V12 is also in the pipeline, but we’ll believe it when we see it. Compared to the X5, the X7’s rear doors are noticeably longer, as is the entire body itself. Up front, the X7 shares the X5’s bold new styling, with that kidney grille design bigger than ever. Previous interior spy shots also showed the X7 will be running the 7 Series sedan’s software, thanks to a 7 Series image being visible in the fully digital instrument gauge cluster.

X7 pricing is expected to start well above the X5’s $50,000 base price and will very easily climb into the six-figure territory with all of the extra options. Question is, will there be an eventual X7 M? Of course, BMW refuses to confirm nor deny its existence, but if the automaker feels there’s a business case for it, then there’s your answer.

Kia Wants You To Test Drive A Stinger GT Against A Porsche Panamera

As well as an Audi A5 and BMW 640i Gran Coupe. Welcome to the "Stinger Experience" test drive.

Kia is feeling very confident about its new Stinger GT sports sedan. So confident, in fact, it has created the “Stinger Experience”, a series of test drive events coming to select cities across the US. Along with professional driving instructors on hand, these events will also include the Audi A5, BMW 640i Gran Coupe and the Porsche Panamera. Attendees will be given the chance to pilot the 365 hp V6 Stinger in 0-60mph acceleration runs, cornering tests and even a slalom course.

They will also have the chance to drive those aforementioned German rivals – the very same cars Kia benchmarked when developing the Stinger GT. “With a faster top-speed and 0-60 time than a six-cylinder Porsche Panamera, the Stinger GT is like nothing anyone has ever seen from Kia before and must be driven to be fully appreciated and understood,” said Saad Chehab, Kia’s vice president of marketing communications. “The Stinger Experience gives people an opportunity to see and feel for themselves just how far Kia has come, and that the Stinger can hold its head high against some of the best that Germany has to offer.”

The Stinger Experience will be making stops in Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. throughout 2018. However, no direct sales opportunities will be provided on site. But there will be specialists on-site who can refer interested buyers to one of the automaker’s 800 US dealerships. Remember, the Stinger GT was designed in Frankfurt and developed on the Nurburgring under the watchful eye of Albert Biermann, former BMW M VP of engineering. He’s now in charge of giving certain Hyundais and Kias an entirely new image. If you’re interested in attending any of these Stinger Experience events, head over to the official website to register, though space is limited.
