E39 Headlights Adjustment Procedure



MODEL:



E39, 5 Series vehicles manufactured after March of 1998



Situation:



Since April of 1998 production, a new type of headlight assembly is being used in E39 (5 Series) vehicles. The bubble for vertical and the wheel for



horizontal adjustments have been eliminated from the unit, therefore a proper headlight vertical aim adjustment procedure should be utilized when



the lights are realigned.



Note:



The headlight can only be adjusted vertically. The horizontal aim is preset at the factory and does not need to be adjusted.



Procedure:



Each new headlight is equipped with two vertical aiming adjustment features marked "V". These adjusters have to be turned equally in direction and



number of turns.

Before adjustment:



^ Ensure that the vehicle is parked on a flat, horizontal level surface 7.5 m (25 feet) in front of the viewing screen (e.g. wall), measured from the



front of the headlight lens.



^ Verify that all tires are correctly inflated.



^ Load driver's seat with a 165 lb. (75 kg) weight. Vehicle's fuel tank should be full, or additional weight should be placed in the trunk.



Adjusting procedure:



^ Measure the height of the headlight from the ground to the center of the headlamp (center = optical axis, which is marked with a point on the



lens).



^ Use that dimension to mark a horizontal line on the wall (H).



^ Switch headlights on. Turn both adjusters of each headlight equally in direction and number of turns until the cut off line (border line between



light and dark areas) is 52 mm (2.1") below the marked line on the screen.

Windshield Wiper Inoperative - One or Both Stages Failed

Situation:



Customer complaints of loss of wiper function (Intermittent/slow, fast or both) may be caused by relay failure.



Correction:



Replace the defective relay with improved relay with new part number.



Note:



A double relay is fitted on E39 vehicles from 9/97

With the introduction of each successive ZCS Coding software update (IDC 07 02 96) comes increasing control module customizing choices (car



memory) for the customer to consider. The purpose of this bulletin is to list these choices found in the DIS ZCS Coding software under Conversion.



The customer should be made aware of these choices when the vehicle is ordered and the changes can be made by the BMW Center service



department during the QC 1. Vehicle individualization is not reimbursable under warranty. Individualizing your customer's vehicle is an important



contribution to a positive customer experience. This bulletin will be updated as new custom configuration options become available. Italicized chart

SUBJECT:



CMT 5000VR, CPT 6000VR Telephones, Memory Upload Procedures.



MODEL:



E39 5 Series, E38 7 Series vehicles equipped with CMT 5000VR or CPT 6000VR Cellular Telephones.



Situation:



After replacing a defective I-BUS Interface Box, a technician tests the phone and finds that the Phone Numbers, Name Tags, etc., previously stored



in the system, are only accessible via the Handset and are not available (depending on vehicle model and equipment level) through the MFL, MID or



Board Monitor.



Cause:



In order to have the information stored in the Transceiver (CMT 5000VR) or Portable Handset (CPT 6000VR) readily available to the integrated



vehicle system, a "Vehicle Copy" of this information must also be stored in the I-BUS Interface Box.

When an I-BUS Interface Box has been replaced, the information stored in the Transceiver or Portable Handset must be Uploaded (transferred) to



the Interface Box.

Procedure



Use the following procedure to perform the Memory Upload:



^ CMT 5000VR (Mobil Phone) - Press: FNC MENU 90 STO



^ CPT 6000VR (Portable Phone) - Press: FNC 0 90 STO



In both cases, the Handset Display will remain blank for the duration of the Upload.



When the Up-load has been completed, the Handset Display will show DONE.



To confirm a successful Up-load, check that the identical information (Phone Numbers, Name Tags, etc.) is accessible and is in the same memory



locations, in the Handset, Instrument Cluster Display, MID or Board Monitor, depending on vehicle model and equipment level.



Important Note I:



On 528i and 528iA vehicles without Navigation System (Low Kombi), the telephone interface default mode has to be reprogrammed to "Low



Kombi" setting using the MID, in order to establish the communication link between MFL and MID.



The reprogramming procedure (which can also be found in the CMT 5000 or CPT 6000 Installation Instructions) should be performed in case of



an Interface Box replacement and prior to the Memory Upload.



Use following procedure to reprogram the Telephone Interface Default Mode:



1. Turn ignition Off for 5 seconds.



2. Turn ignition switch to Accessory position.



3. Press the TEL button on the MID (MID will go into phone mode).



4. Quickly press and hold the BMW soft key for approximately 9 seconds.



5. Display will cycle through BMW HELP and Roadside Assistance phone number, then will show Hardware and Software version (example:



EJB HW:01 SW:01). HIGH KOM, LOW KOM, and BMW will appear above the soft keys on the left side of the MID.



6. You will have 3 seconds to press the soft key below LOW KOM.



7. MID display will return to Dial Number mode.



To confirm that the default setting has been successfully changed: press the R/T button on the steering wheel. The MID display will then show



"MEMORY EMPTY!". If the procedure was unsuccessful, "DIAL NUMBER" will remain in the MID.



8. Turn ignition to Off position.



Important Note II:



On vehicles with BMW Navigation System the new Roadside Assistance phone number is "hard coded" in the I-BUS Interface through the



Board Monitor (procedure also to be found in the CMT 5000 or CPT 6000 Installation Instructions). If the I-Bus Interface Box in the vehicle is



ever replaced, the Roadside Assistance phone number programming procedure must be repeated.



Use following procedure to change the RSA phone number through the Board Monitor



1. Turn ignition to Accessory position.



2. Using the handset, enter: for CMT 5000VR- FCN, Menu, 95, CLR



for CPT 6000VR- FCN, 0, 95, CLR



3. Through the Board Monitor menu select Telephone mode.



4. Select Digit Entry mode.



5. Using the rotary dial, enter the RSA phone number:



for Mark I Navigation (up to 9/97)- 1-800-861-8360



for Mark II Navigation (from 9197)- 1-800-599-4809

6. Exit Digit Entry mode (by activating the arrow symbol on the rotary dial).



7. Select INFO mode (the phone number will remain in the display).



8. Using the handset, enter:



for CMT 5000VR- FCN, Menu, 95 (display must say Off), STO.



within 10 seconds FCN, Menu, 95, CLR.



for CPT 6000VR- FCN, 0, 95, STO.



within 10 seconds FCN, 0, 95, CLR.



If the reprogramming procedure was successful the Board Monitor will return to the screen with Digit Entry mode highlighted and the phone



number will disappear from the display. If the procedure was not successful it must be repeated.



9. Press MENU to return to the main menu.

E39 Integrated Automatic Heating and Air Conditioning System (IHKA)- Common Complaints



Model:



E39, 5 Series



Situation:



Warranty analyses of the returned IHKA Control Modules, indicate that a substantial percentage of the replaced units do not exhibit any signs of



malfunction. The reasons for replacement were: misdiagnosis or unfamiliarity with features of IHKA system.



Listed below are the most frequent complaints pertaining to the IHKA system:



Complaint 1:



"The A/C system delivers air-conditioned air after a delay of approx. 5 minutes".



Cause:



The IHKA Control Module is either not coded or has been coded incorrectly.



Action:



Recode the IHKA Control Module using ZCS Coding/Recoding/IHKA path.



Complaint 2:



"The A/C compressor runs constantly when the A/C is switched on".

Cause:



The E39 IHKA system uses a variable displacement A/C compressor. Since output is regulated internally by the position of the swash plate,



compressor cycles less often.



Action:



Normal operation mode of A/C compressor.



Information regarding compressor operation can be found in the DIS/MoDiC under



"Functional Description:-Air conditioning and Compressor control", or in E39 IHKA Training Reference Manual.



Complaint 3:



"The interior temperature sensor runs constantly".



Cause:



The interior temperature fan located in the face plate of IHKA Control Module is required to ensure accurate temperature measurement. This fan is



switched off by means of the load cutoff function 16 minutes after the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock. The fan is switched back on,



when one of the vehicle doors is opened. This gives the impression that the fan is running constantly.



Action:



Normal operation mode of the system.



Information regarding interior temperature fan can be found in the DIS/MoDiC under "Functional Description-Temperature Control".



Complaint 4:



"Footwell is heated sporadically".



Cause:



If the center stratification adjuster is set to max. cold position and the air vents are pointed downwards, the cold air flow is directed towards the



interior temperature sensor. That causes the IHKA Control Module to detect low temperature. The IHKA tries to compensate and to "heat up",



particularly at the area of footwell outlets.



Action:



Customer has to be informed about optimal position of the stratification adjuster. Information regarding front mixing air control can be found in the



DIS/MoDiC under "Functional Description-IHKA Temperature Control".



Complaint 5:



"The heater blower only runs at a constant speed, increases its speed on its own or stops running from time to time while in manual mode".



Cause:



The faults may be found at the following components: blower output stage, blower relay, blower motor, power supply, control voltage output at the



IHKA Module.



Note:



The blower output stage is not diagnosis-capable. Malfunctions in the blower output stage, relay or motor are not being stored in the IHKA fault



memory. Therefore, the fact that there is not entry in the fault memory doesn't indicate that a fault is not present in one of the above components.



Only faults in blower control voltage output from the IHKA Module are entered into the IHKA fault memory.

Action:



Troubleshoot using DIS or MoDiC.



Complaint 6:



"Different versions of the IHKA have been modified several times since the introduction of the series. For a description of function features refer to



Technical Reference Information 64 75 98 from January of 1998.
