SUBJECT:
FC 48 "Solenoid Valve Converter Lock-up Clutch" Stored in the TCM/EGS
MODELS:
All E46 3 series with 5L40E (GM5)
All E39 528iA/iAT with 5L40E (GM5)
Situation:
Customer complains that the transmission light is illuminated. FC 48 (30 Hex) is stored in the transmission control module.
Cause:
TCC solenoid.
Correction:
Diagnose and replace TCC solenoid.
Procedure:
1. Carry out a quick-test with the MoDiC/DIS tester. FC 48 (30 Hex) will be stored in the TCM/EGS.
2. If faults other than FC48 (30 Hex) are stored in the TCM/EGS, contact the Technical Hotline before proceeding with this repair.
3. Check the transmission fluid level and condition. If the transmission fluid and level is OK, replace the solenoid valve for the converter lock-up
clutch (TCC solenoid). It the fluid is not OK, call the Technical Hotline. If the level is low, check for leaks before calling the Hotline
4. Refer to repair manual section 24 32 550 (The TCC solenoid is referred to as the "pressure regulator for torque converter clutch" in section 24
32 550).
