Its body rolls and pitches more than the other two and its maximum grip is relatively low, but its steering is consistent and precise. Not low, mind you, but lower. By our measure, the X2’s center of gravity is two inches lower than that of the E-Pace and the XC40. Each of our drivers independently used the term “playful” to describe the E-Pace’s dynamic character, proving either that the E-Pace is, in fact, playful or that we’re spending too much time together. Instead, each of the three vehicles is, as David Bowie once wrote, “torn between the light and dark, where others see their targets: divine symmetry.” Don’t take the E-Pace’s distant third-place finish to mean that it is without merit. But for those who want to feel as if they are riding above traffic, well, they’re going to have to get something a lot taller than this (or either of the other vehicles in this test), because everything on the road now is tall.
Ultimately, though, that’s not what these vehicles are about. There is a complaint about the interior, though, aside from its humdrum styling - its seating position. The X2 puts aside its sibling's handsome but conservative styling in favor of something with a bit more flair. It’s a porker that weighs a whopping 537 pounds more than the BMW and returns the longest braking distance, the lowest skidpad grip, the slowest slalom speed, and the weakest acceleration. As Calgary's longest-running BMW dealership we pride ourselves on providing a professional, stress-free experience. Poughkeepsie, NY customers know they will have a great shopping experience. It's also really calm, though, and cruising down the highway is a quiet, comfortable experience. Though, the seats themselves are comfortable and outward visibility is surprisingly good for having such a short roof and windows. Look inside our xDrive 28i and take note of the premium SensaTec heated leather seating, ambient lighting, woodgrain trim with chrome accents, 3-spoke leather wrapped multi-function sport steering wheel, and 10-way power adjustable seats.
Its front seats are supportive and accommodating in that characteristically Volvo way. It’s easy to lose touch with the goings-on of the front tires. It’s clearly not our choice, but out on our handling loop, the thing was a blast. That pays pretty big handling dividends. A jarring ride is the penalty for the handling goodness. If the Jaguar is the playful one, the Volvo is the befuddled one. Nor do the cutesy touches, such as the jaguar spots molded into the mat of an interior cubby or the silhouette of a jaguar and its cub on the edge of the windshield and projected onto the ground by the puddle lamps. Having said that, the interior is surprisingly premium feeling. Had we stayed in the confines of one or another of the hipster enclaves we encountered on our journey, the charming Volvo XC40 might have won this comparison test. Unlike the previous comparison test of this class in 2016, there is no runaway winner this time. There are some very nice bits inside, but the cheap, hard black plastic below the instrument binnacle and on the center console would be an embarrassment in a Kia from a decade ago. But its dark bits are deeper and more plentiful, and most of its lights shine no brighter than the others’. The X2 gets more right than most of its competition when it comes to the driving experience, even in a segment that can seem a little silly at times. But we could not stay out in our retreat alone, simply driving quickly over wooded two-lanes and enjoying the quiet pace. The A-pillars are thin and placed well, so even though the windshield is aggressively raked, you can see out of it really well and you don’t have to crane your head around the A-pillars to see through corners. If the gap between the BMW X1 and X3 has been bothering you for years, from a purely completist, alphanumeric standpoint, your prayers have been answered.
It hardly seems necessary for BMW to have given the X2 xDrive28i such a long official name. The BMW name, model names and logo are registered trademarks. And what’s going on with the front tires, all too often, is that they are losing purchase on the pavement. What’s not to love? Its relatively low mass also helped the vehicle with the least powerful engine not only return the best fuel economy (25 mpg, 2 more than the Volvo and 6 more than the Jaguar) but also match the Volvo for the acceleration laurels. It’s the least expensive. The Volvo’s power delivery is also the least linear of the three, surging and receding slightly out of step with throttle-pedal inputs. Maintenance may be carried out at any authorized BMW Retailer or BMW Service Centre in Canada, where BMW Certified Technicians will service your vehicle using only Original BMW parts. It's a fairly low rear bed, too, so your dog will appreciate it for the easy jump in and out.
