FIRST DRIVE: BMW X2 XDrive28i -- Defying The Odds

BMW has tuned the steering, suspension and dynamics of the X2 to be distinctively sportier than its X1 sibling. Overall, it’s the striking, slightly devious sibling to the X1. More recently, I drove the BMW X2 xDrive28i and claimed that, despite being the antithesis of what a BMW is supposed to be, it’s actually a ton of fun. B48 engine makes from 181 horsepower (BMW 220i) to 255 horsepower (740e iPerformance). This drivetrain is effective at creating 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Its 228 horses and 258 lb.-ft. In the X2 xDrive28i, it makes 228 hp at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1,450 rpm. An aggressive torque converter lockup strategy means a nice and direct feel from the transmission, with quick shifts and gear ratios that really take advantage of the generous low-rpm torque output. Peak torque of 258 lbs.-ft. However, hitting the curves in exuberant fashion is consistently rewarded.

I find high-end fashion confusing, with much of it absurd and ridiculous, so maybe I’m not the best judge of style and design. When I first drove the BMW X3 M40i a few month back, I was immediately shocked at how much like an old-school BMW it felt like. While the driving dynamics are BMW great, the interior is equally familiar with a few new wrinkles. SANTA MONICA, California - This coastal city seemed like the perfect place to take the 2018 BMW X2 xDrive28i because few places in L.A. We measured 67 decibels of din at 70 mph, only slightly louder than a BMW X3. However, after having driven the new BMW X2, I can confidently say that it has defied the odds. However, they both share the same dimension in wheel base, which is 105.1 inches. However, I defy anyone to actually drive the X2 and not come away at least a little bit impressed.

If you live in the Central New Hampshire to Boston, Massachusetts regions, come to Tulley BMW of Manchester for your Certified Pre Owned BMW sales, service, and parts needs. A new surprise is the gearshift that isn’t the normal joystick variety, but a typical stalk that might be more intuitive for a new BMW client. There is plenty of plastic along the wheelarches, sills and doors to make it look more outdoorsy (in the same manner that Subaru has been practicing this art), but the ride height takes this intention only so far. Lumbar adjustments make for a comfy ride no matter the distance. Here is what C&D put in its “Highs” section for the X2: “Attractive inside and out, nails the fun-to-drive quotient.” Surprisingly, none of C&D’s “Lows” have anything to do with its front-drive layout or lack of communication, saying “Stiff ride, road and suspension noise, high as-tested price.” And that stiff ride is actually part of what make it handle so well and be so fun to drive.

In this new review, C&D claims the little X2 to be fun-to-drive and full of character, the latter of which mostly thanks to its design and C-pillar Roundel. We can call this version a”coupe SUV”, the design is very unique and aerodynamic. It shares its platform with the X1, and also with all the Minis, but it's the first iteration of BMW's new design language. The X2 xDrive28i gets a stiffer body and suspension, lower center of gravity and lighter curb weight than the X1, which provides a sharper, more engaging driving experience. Government regulators estimate the fuel cost of the 2020 X2 xDrive28i to be $1,800 per year. Now, Car and Driver has driven the BMW X2 xDrive28i and it seems they may agree with me yet again. Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore - I'm surprised how much I like the BMW X2. The X2 launched as a 2019 model and, this being only its sophomore year, BMW hasn't changed much for 2020. Last year's standard 6.5-inch infotainment display has been ditched in favor of the formerly optional 8.8-inch unit; navigation is now also standard across the X2 lineup. It sits on the BMW chassis shared by the X1 and Mini Cooper lines but doesn’t look like anything in the lineup.
