ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.



SUBJECT:



E39 New Generation Radio Replacement



MODEL:



E39 produced 08/28/00 - 09/18/00



SITUATION:



The Voice Input System (SES Module) will be available in the near future on E39 vehicles, as optional equipment in conjunction with a digital



cellular phone.



Faulty software in the NG (new generation) radio will cause the following malfunction:



-- When the Voice Input System is switched on there is no acoustical (beep) if the radio is off.



AFFECTED VEHICLES:



This Service Action involves E39 vehicles (525iA, 525iT, 525iTA, 530iA, 540i, and 540iA) with C53 BMW Business Radio (with cassette drive)



and without DSP audio system, which were produced from August 28th, up to September 18th of 2000.



In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer



Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION



On all affected vehicles replace the radio. For the replacement procedure, please refer to the Repair Instruction RA 65 11 030 (which can be found in



BMW technical Information System - TIS).



After switching the radio ON for the first time, the country (area) codes will appear in the MID display. Confirm the relevant code (USA) by



pressing the corresponding preset key located underneath.



LABEL INSTRUCTIONS



This Service Action has been assigned code number 290. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155)



and:



a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);



b. punch out code number 290 printed on the label and,



c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.



If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on



top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
