SUBJECT

Approved Diesel Fuel

MODEL

All with BMW Advanced Diesel engines

SITUATION

Some filling stations in specific states offer biodiesel blends greater than 5% (B10 or greater). BMW only approves blends up to 5% (maximum B5).

INFORMATION

Current BMW vehicles with advanced diesel technology were designed and tested to run on Ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) with a biodiesel

content of 5% or lower. This also meets ASTM D6751 specification. The use of any other fuel may damage the high-pressure fuel system

components; internal engine damage could also occur. Any resulting failures/damage would not be covered under the BMW limited warranty.

The diesel pump must have this label (ULSD).

Not to be used in BMW vehicles.

A few states, such as Illinois, have filling stations that now offer biodiesel blends greater than B5 (biodiesel blends greater than 5%); these pumps

are clearly labeled. However, up to 50% of Illinois diesel filling stations currently offer diesel that meets the BMW requirements.

Pumps dispensing up to B5 are not required to be labeled by the Federal Trade Commission.

BMW is aware of the changing environment in biodiesel availability, and is monitoring state-specific requirements. We will keep you informed of

any future developments.

In the meantime, owners should be advised to only use diesel fuel with a maximum B5 content.
