This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 84 06 00 dated June 2000.
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY
ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT :
Retrofitting Adapter Cable for MK II Plus Navigation Computer on E38, E39 E46 Vehicles
MODEL:
E38, 7 Series with standard BMW Navigation System E39, 5 Series with optional BMW Navigation System E46, 3 Series with optional BMW
Navigation System
SITUATION I
This situation applies when no customer complaint of a navigation failure is received. The resistors installed in the input circuitry of the Navigation
Computer can fail (due to an overloading condition), causing irreversible damage to the Navigation Computer. As a result of such a failure, the
screen of the on-board monitor will remain white or black permanently (without displayed image), and the audio system of the vehicle will be
inoperative.
To protect these resistors against overloading (and to avoid the situation described above), a special adapter cable with an integrated resistance
module has been developed. The adapter cable has to be installed between the Navigation Computer and the vehicle navigation wiring harness.
The Customer Notification Letter as shown.
SITUATION II
This situation applies when no customer complaint of a permanently black or white screen is received. In case of a total Navigation Computer
failure, after switching the ignition ON the screen of the on-board monitor remains white or black permanently, and no image is displayed. Both
LED's on the Navigation Computer are off, and it is no longer possible to eject the road map CD from the Navigation computer drive. The
Navigation Computer has been irreversibly damaged due to the failure of input circuitry resistors.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E38, E39 and E46 vehicles equipped with a BMW Navigation System which were produced from May 1999 to
October 1999.
To determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer
Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges as shown are only for informational purposes.
CORRECTION I
On the affected vehicles first verify if the improved Navigation Computer has already been installed, as per enclosed procedure. If the old type unit
is still installed, then retrofit a navigation adapter cable between the navigation computer and the vehicle wiring harness.
Navigation MK II Plus adapter cable.
1. Plug connector to vehicle harness
2. Resistance module
3. Plug connectors to navigation computer

CORRECTION II
Only in case of a permanent Navigation Computer failure, replace the unit with an improved part (PN 65 90 6 908 311), load with current version of
Navigation operating software (CD V15.0 or higher), and recode using DIS/MODiC version CD 22.0 or later. Perform Campaign Entry into DCS
System, and affix the campaign label after replacing failed Navigation Computer.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The appropriate map software CD must be ordered from Navigation Technologies, by calling 1-888-628-6277.
When calling the NavTech Hot Line, you have to provide the following information in order to receive a free of charge map CD (special program for
service applications only):
1. Personal identification
2. BMW center name, address, and dealer code
3. Affected VIN
4. Appropriate map CD selection (region of the country).
Ordering CD maps without justification (no warranty claim filed), will incur a charge of $127.00 per CD map.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 275. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120)
and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 275 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on
top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

4. Check the part number on the label attached to the navigation computer. If the part number is:
65 90 8 386 849, or
65 90 8 385 439, or
65 90 8 386 851 then continue with the step 5.
If the part number differs from those listed above, the navigation computer has already been replaced with the updated part, and NO action is
required.
