This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 84 14 00 dated December 2000.

SUBJECT

E38, E39, E53, E52 with CPT 7000 Phone; Vehicle Battery Discharged

MODEL

E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series), E53 (X5), E52 (Z8)

with BMW CPT 7000 Phone and Compensator

SITUATION

The Compensator can intermittently stay active with approximately 420 mA of current draw on some vehicles equipped with a BMW Digital CPT

7000 Phone (with a Compensator), after the ignition is turned OFF. This can result in a discharged battery when the vehicle is parked for an

extended period of time (overnight).

CAUSE

CPT 7000 Phone does not provide sufficient electrical load to turn off the compensator.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis;

1. Make sure that CPT 7000 phone handset is connected to the vehicle.

2. On the affected vehicle perform closed circuit current measurement using adapter 61 2 300 (PN 90 88 6 612 300). For detailed procedure refer

to Service Information Bulletin 61 08 00 from 08/00 ("Closed Circuit Current Measurement").

3. If a constant current draw of approximately 400 mA is detected after vehicle goes into the "sleep mode", disconnect phone Compensator at

connection X1765 (black, 3-pin). (Compensator is located: in the left rear trunk corner on E38/E39/E53 vehicles, or behind the driver's seat in

the CD changer storage box in E52 vehicles).

4. If the current draw is reduced to the acceptable level (between 30 and 50 mA), after X1765 is disconnected then install the "Compensator

adapter harness" (PN 84 11 0 138 904) between the connector X1765 and compensator.
