Center Armrest Slider Interferes with the Phone Harness

Situation:
The harness access hole in the sliding section of the center armrest may damage the telephone prewire harness if the BMW cellular phone is
installed.
Affected Vehicles:
E39 produced 9/98
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer
Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number flanges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor
Correction:
Replace the center armrest slider of each affected vehicle with P/N 51 16 8 213 847. The center armrest slider should be replaced on vehicles, with
or without a phone installed, as a preventive measure.
Procedure:

To replace the center armrest slider:
1. Push the rear vent (1) up slightly and remove the cupholder (2).
2. Slide the rear vent (1) down to remove.
3. Remove the two attaching screws (2).
4. Lift the center armrest off the console.
5. Remove the four cushion attaching screws on the underside of the slider.
6. Assemble the cushion onto the new slider (P/N 51 16 8 213 874) and install the slider assembly onto the console.
7. Replace the rear vent and cupholder.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 237. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-095)
and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 237 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on
top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty
Parts and Labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement will be provided through campaign
entry.
