Harness Connector Missing for Retrofit Cassette Storage Box
MODEL:
E39 Vehicles produced from 9/98
Situation:
The harness connector, which provides panel illumination for the cassette storage box, has been deleted on vehicles from approximately 09/98. This
(3) pin connector is normally found on top of the air duct, directly under the series production storage box in the center console.
For vehicles without this harness connector, an adapter harness is required.
Procedure:
1. Strip off 1/8" (3 mm) of insulation from both ends of each wire.
2. Double crimp (wire crimp and insulation crimp) a female terminal P/N 61 13 1 383 776 to one end of each wire using crimp tool P/N 81 24 9
408 126 (tool is marked Ampliversal 720781-3) found in the Electrical Repair Kit 1.

Steps 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, refer to Figure 1
3. Take two pieces of wire, and temporarily join them together by twisting together the stranded end where the insulation had been removed in
step 1. Double crimp (wire crimp and insulation crimp) a male terminal P/N 61 13 1 393 723 to these twisted wires to create wire assembly
(1).
4. Repeat step 3 for the remaining two pieces of wire to create wire assembly (2).
5. Wire assembly (1) - Insert the male terminal into #1 position of connector P/N 61 13 1 383 863 (3), and insert each female terminal into #1
position of each connector housing P/N 61 13 1 383 738 (4) and (5).
6. Wire assembly (2) - Insert the male terminal into #2 position of connector P/N 61 13 1 383 863 (3), and insert each female terminal into #2
position of each connector housing P/N 61 13 1 383 738 (4) and (5).
7. Slide on the covers to connectors (1), (4) and (5) to complete the adapter harness assembly.
8. Pull out the series production storage box and remove the connector (1) from its retaining clip. This connector provides illumination of the
center console ash tray.
Disconnect the connector (3 pin connector with two wires, wire colors brown/black and gray/red on the harness side).
9. Connect the harness end (male) connector of the ash tray illumination connector to the female connector of the adapter harness assembly.
10. Connect one male connector of the adapter harness to the ash tray connector, and the other male connector to the cassette storage box
connector.
11. Reinstall the ashtray connector in its retaining clip.
12. Push the cassette storage box firmly into position to complete the installation.
