Situation:

With the introduction of the E46 (323iA and 328iA) and E39 (528iA as of 09/99) a new 5 speed Automatic Transmission will be introduced. The

new transmission is manufactured by General Motors Powertrain Strasbourg and is designated as A5S360R (5L40-E).

The advantages/improvement of the 5L40-E. over the THM-R1 (4L30-E) are listed in the illustration.

Transmission type: 5 speed automatic transmission

Transmission Capacity: Max torque input at 4200 RPM = 360NM

Transmission Ratios: 1st gear 3.45

2nd gear 2.21

3rd gear 1.59

4th gear 1.00

5th gear 0.76

Reverse 3.16

Torque Converter: 245 mm dia. torque converter with slip controlled lock up clutch

*Transmission Fluid: Lifetime Fill - TEXACO ETL 7045*

Procedure

346

A. Fluid level checking procedure:

Checking the fluid level may be necessary if there is evidence of leakage or in the event of a complaint that may be fluid level related.

*NOTE:

THE ONLY TRANSMISSION FLUID THAT IS APPROVED FOR USE IN THIS TRANSMISSION IS TEXACO ETL 7045:

P/N 83 22 0 002 121 - 25 LITER CONTAINER.*

ALL OTHER FLUIDS WILL CAUSE NON WARRANTABLE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE.

*Note:

The first A5S 360R Transmissions were manufactured with the THM-R1 DEXRON III fluid. Nevertheless these units are to be topped off

with TEXACO ETL 7045. The new fluid is interchangeable and completely mixable with DEXRON III.*

The following procedure should be followed when checking fluid level on the A5S 360R.

1. The transmission temperature must be between 30锟斤拷C and 50锟斤拷C before checking can begin. Use the DIS or the MODIC to determine the

transmission temperature.

2. The vehicle must be level and without load. With the engine running, switch on the air conditioning. This will increase the idle speed

and ensure that all oil passages in the transmission are filled with oil.

3. Step on the brake firmly, apply parking brake fully and move the selector lever through each gear position, pausing briefly in each gear.

4. With the engine running and the selector lever in Park position, remove the filler plug (1) located on the right side of the transmission

(see picture for location). If a small stream of oil runs out, the fluid level is correct.

5. If no oil runs out when the filler plug is removed, the fluid level is too low. Add oil until it starts to overflow.

6. With the engine running, reinstall the oil filler plug (tightening torque = 20 NM).

B. Adding oil after transmission repairs:

1. With the engine stopped, add oil to the transmission until it overflows.

2. Insert the filler plug and tighten by hand. Place the selector lever in Park position and start the engine.

3. Follow the fluid level checking procedure as described under step A.

C. Notes on fluid level checking and adding transmission oil:

If the transmission temperature rises above 50锟斤拷C during the fluid level checking procedure, the resulting oil level will be too low.

Have necessary equipment, oil pump and transmission fluid available before starting the fluid level checking procedure.

It is preferred to check the transmission fluid level at 30锟斤拷C, this way the transmission will hold extra oil versus topping off at 50锟斤拷C.

D. Scope of Repair

^ With the release of the 5L40-E, the transmission control module utilizes EEPROMs (Flash technology) this eliminates the need to replace

EPROMs in order to update or modify the program.

^ The control module can be reprogrammed using the DIS or MODIC in the same manner as the DME modules are reprogrammed.

^ PRIOR TO THE REMOVAL OR REPLACEMENT OF ANY COMPONENTS, APPROVAL BY WAY OF A CONTACT NUMBER

FROM MR. HEYBERGER, MR KUHN, MR BOSCHIAN'S, THE TECHNICAL HOTLINE OR YOUR REGIONAL TECHNICAL

SPECIALIST MUST BE OBTAINED. Refer to the contact number in the comment section of warranty claim. The replacement of a

complete transmission without prior approval will be subject to debit.
