MODEL

INFORMATION

Starting with Model Year 2011, the new Automatic Start/Stop (MSA) engine feature was introduced to M3 vehicles equipped with manual 6-speed

or DCT transmissions.

The MSA system automatically turns the engine off when a vehicle stops (e.g., at traffic lights) and then starts the engine when driving is resumed.

This feature reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

The default status of the MSA system is OFF - an orange LED illuminated above the "A OFF" button (1) in the center console switch cluster. To

activate the MSA function, the "A OFF" button has to be pressed (the LED goes off).

The Automatic Start/Stop feature starts working after the vehicle's initial speed exceeds 5 mph.

The engine is automatically switched off when the vehicle is stopped and the following criteria are met:

1. For manual transmission vehicles - the neutral gear is selected and the clutch pedal is not depressed.

For DCT vehicles - the transmission is in the D or S sequential mode (gear selected).

2. The driver's seat belt is fastened and the driver's door is closed.

3. When the engine turns OFF, the "Start/Stop" indicator lamp is illuminated in the instrument cluster, indicating that the automatic engine start will

follow.

Note:

With the engine switched off air flow from the IHKA climate control will be reduced.

Automatic engine switching off will not occur in the following conditions:

^ The steering wheel has been turned from the straight position before stopping

2010 BMW M3 Coupe (E92) V8-4.0L (S65) Page 161

^ In low (below 37 锟斤拷F) or in extremely high ambient temperatures

^ IHKA is in the heating or cooling phase

^ Front windshield condensation is present, despite IHKA system activation

^ The engine is in a warm-up phase

^ Low battery state of charge

^ The hood latch is open

^ Driving in reverse

The engine will automatically restart when:

^ The clutch pedal is depressed (manual transmission); or

^ The brake pedal is released (DCT); or

^ The gas pedal is pressed while the brake pedal is still depressed (DCT); or

^ The selector lever is moved from the D or S mode to the N or R positions (DCT); or

^ The steering wheel is turned

Additionally, the engine will automatically restart even without the driver's intention of driving away when:

^ The passenger compartment temperature rises quickly even with the IHKA cooling turned on; or

^ Front windshield condensation is present despite the IHKA activation; or

^ The battery is significantly discharged; or

^ The vehicle starts rolling (manual transmission car.)

Safety Feature

The engine will not automatically start after being automatically turned off by the MSA system when:

^ The driver's seat belt is unfastened; or

^ The driver's door is opened; or

^ The hood has been unlocked.

In such cases, the "A OFF" lamp will illuminate in the instrument cluster.

The engine can be restarted manually using the Start/Stop button.
