SUBJECT
Service Action: Program Control Units - DME (OBD)
MODEL
E60 and E61 vehicles with N54 engines produced from 2/10/2009 to 8/27/2009.
SITUATION
There is a DME (MSD81) software error which would affect OBD communication efficiency. Diagnostic results during testing could be incomplete.
This would not cause any driveability issues.
In order to correct this situation, BMW is conducting a Service Action to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E60 and E61 vehicles with N54 engines produced from 2/10/2009 to 8/27/2009.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer
Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
PROCEDURE
Program the vehicle using only ISTA/P 2.35.1 or later.
Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 551. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-366)
and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 551 (2) printed on the label; and
c. Affix the label to the B-Pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on
top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
